JRPG - Japanese Role Playing Game. The Japanese developed RPG games tend to have different priorities - mechanically and narratively - so they get their own genre. Although the genre, like many others, is a vague umbrella term. Also, if you are going to be delving into Final Fantasy 14, it may be best to look up a chronological order of trailers. FF14 has multiple expansions that expand on the story, and the ones you mentioned were the most recent two, so they would make little sense (although I cant promise they will make more sense if watched chronologically, admittedly, as most story is told in game) The chronological release of the game and its expansions is as follows, and spans from 2010 (or 2013 technically, since ARR) to the present day. 0 - Final Fantasy 14 (was a messy game that was bleeding money) 1 - Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn (a reboot of FF14 under a new director and was made very successful due to it. Narratively, they made an apocalyptic event that tore the world of FInal Fantasy 14 apart, and the reboot focuses on rebuilding from there, hence A Realm Reborn.) 2 - Heavensward (First Expansion to the game and story) 3 - Stormblood (second Expansion to game and story) 4 - Shadowbringers (Third expansion) 5 - Endwalker (most recent expansion) A wonderful start to Final Fantasy 14's trailers would be to watch the following official trailer. It is a prologue trailer that shows the apocalyptic event that was the narrative explanation for the reboot. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmaXY4yYj9qqobM

That sword would indeed require superhuman strength to wield. When the blond boy says he wants to become a soldier, it does not mean what you think. As per the game's wiki: "SOLDIER is the elite fighting force of the Shinra Electric Power Company in the Final Fantasy VII universe. Its members are advanced super-soldiers with superhuman strength, speed, and agility. " As for watching more FF7 videos, I'm not sure there is much more content for you to watch outside of the game unfortunately.
@VioletHyena
@VioletHyena 2 жыл бұрын
What that leaves out is that Cloud failed to join SOLDIER, he instead was experimented on outside of the SOLDIER program. Where the SOLDIER program saw humans grafted with cells from Jenova then washed in a Mako bath, Hojo grafted cells from Sephiroth into Cloud and Zack as retribution for potentially having destroyed Sephiroth originally. Zack survived the process but Cloud nearly died from it and instead was given severe mako poisoning that broke his personality. He absorbed his memories of Zack and sephiroth and internalized them, creating a new personality who was stronger then both his former heros.

So this was the first game I played where I understood the protagonists were basically environmentalists (there had been others) who were fighting a corporation that was destroying the planet. It then spirals out into more personal stories for each character - Barret and his daughter, Cloud, his mental health and his relationship to Sephiroth, etc. it was a major turning point for me in terms of understanding the importance of characters in games. Also one of the developers used the game to help him deal with the loss of his mother several years prior to working on the game. Causing the player to experience a similar sudden, unexpected loss and then find a way beyond it. I had a family member die that same year and this game stuck with me because of it. I’m sure someone mentioned this but The J in JRPG stands for Japanese. Anyway, thanks for the reaction and for being such a cool person. :)

Some explanations: FF7 drops you into the game with "You're an eco-terrorist and you're about to plant some bombs in a power plant. Have fun." and then unfolds into a story about identity and trauma against the backdrop of environmentalism, war, capitalism, and fascism and the transition between those systems. Rufus (One of the villains) is pretty explicit about how his Dad managed to acquire all the capital in the country (By owning all the power plants and bleeding everyone dry) and there's no point in trying to acquire more through capitalism and instead he is going to rule through fear, militarism, and expansionism to acquire more of it. The three main plotlines are eco-terrorism, anti-fascism, and a messiah story that end up causing conflict for the gang over their priorities. (Essentially, Rufus and the other villains want the Messiah to lead them to the garden of eden because it's the only place they haven't completely jacked for natural resources and the planet is dying). eventually they realize that basically they all have the same enemies and saving the planet means dismantling the military industrial complex. There is also the more personal story between Cloud and Sephiroth which is more about soldiers, trauma, war, madness, and identity, and he ultimately forms the final villain.

That 2015 "sneak peek/reveal" trailer is honestly a landmark moment in gaming history. People had been clamoring for a remake of the original ever since rumors started about the possibility of one being made well over a decade beforehand. It all crescendoed at the massively important 2015 E3 Expo (which had a lot of really major highlights with the FFVII Remake trailer being the cream of the crop/bell of the ball if you will). It came out of nowhere with no hints leading up to it and a lot of grown men including myself cried buckets over the excitement of it that day. And yes, you're not seeing those trailers wrong. The game didn't release until 2020. There were lots of starts and stops along the way. Even going so far as to bring in a completely different development team and basically going back to the drawing board at a point. There was plenty of panic we wouldn't actually be delivered the promise. But we were in 2020. And it was incredible. The game is extremely polished, fun, and very true to FF7 which adding a lot of new wrinkles to expand the possibilities for the next entries. I cannot wait for those. Signed, An FFVII Mega Fan

For context, FF7 was a hugely formative game for a ton of people when it first released back in 1997. If you ask someone what their first JRPG was, there’s a good chance they’ll tell you it was Final Fantasy VII. It was the first time that a JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game) saw immense critical and commercial appeal in the West, and almost single handedly bolstered the genre into the public’s eye. It’s often cited as one of the best games on the original PlayStation and is a big contributor to why that system was so incredibly popular.

I got super excited when you said you were going to watch the trailers for Endwalker and Shadowbringers. For a little context, FFXIV is an online game whose story never truly ends, just story archs end and new ones begin. Thus, Shadowbringers was an expansion to the game, adding an epic new story and new areas in the game to play, and was released in 2019, whereas Endwalker was released last December (after a last minute delay). Because you can customize how your character looks in the game, (you don't have to be male, or even human!) the guy with the brown hair and stubble is the model used in promotional materials to represent the player's character. So please watch them, they are AWESOME! Just be sure you're watching the FULL trailers and not the teaser versions.

Easily one of the most important games in gaming. If you were a gamer in the 90's you understand. JRPG's were always around, but this is the game that made them pretty mainstream. It really spoke to the Western audience, thematically. And the aesthetics, and characters are super good. So naturally a remake of this calibur was a huge event. And very dangerous for the developers. You know how people are - when it comes to bringing back older pieces of entertainment, that people already considered perfect. They gotta get it right. Also, there's a channel that makes weapons from games, and other sources of media. They created the Buster sword (The big sword you keep commenting on). And yes, it's literally impossible to wield, even for body builders. Was cool to see though. You have to realize though, in these games, people have very unworldly strength. Similar to Anime.

3:50 you really need to be either a FF7 fan or at least someone who has lived through this era of gaming to understand the emotional importance of this... For people of my generation FF7 was the FIRST JRPG (Japanese Role PLaying Game), evne tho it was the 7th installement of the series, it was the FIRST to be released in Europe back in 97 and be translanted, and the 3rd/4th Final fantasy game released in the US. It was also the 1st FF title released on the PSone, before that ALL of FF series was released on nintendo consoles. So it was a real revolution for us gamers,a nd something absolutly stupendous and amazing for us young European gamers. IT was the GAME that made me love RPG's, it was the first game that i was completly immersed and engrossed by its story, its characters, and its world. before that games where just fun, but never really emotional or immersive. It was always about the high score or just finishing the game, Mario, Sonic, Zelda etc. But FF7, WAS the very first game that sucked me in its world. I've spent countless sleepless nights during Week ends and summer vacation to finish my first playthrough when i was 13yro, and it took me 146 hours to Explore and Discover EVERYTHING the game had to offer. And even then there STILL was things that i discovered on later playthroughs years later... So when the Rumour growed that a FF7 remake was in the works, the whole FF7 fanbase just stopped breathing, and where waiting. So in 2015 whenTHIS trailer finaly as released..., an emotional Dam just broke and let everything flow. Even thp the game released 2 years ago and i allready completed it several times, i STILL get emotional and teary eyed when i look at it. FF7 is One of the most important game in the WHOLE of the gaming history, just has importan as Doom/Wolfenstein or Simcity was... I cannot insist enough on the Importance this game had on the whole industry and the gaming community.

Yeah, the original Final Fantasy VII is one of the most famous video games ever made. Released in the US in 1997, it was an overnight sensation and many people’s first exposure to the JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game) genre, and at the time, was one of the most cinematic stories ever told in a video game. It had deep themes about environmentalism and personal identity, along with arguably its most famous theme about coping with and accepting loss. It was also a huge contributor to the success of the original PlayStation, providing a reason for people to try out Sony’s new machine to hear what all the fuss was about. For decades, rumors swirled about a potential remake. While the original game is iconic, graphically it did not age well at all. Its blocky characters and wildly changing art styles between gameplay modes dated it and made it harder for some newer gamers to go back and experience it without being distracted by its looks. The game also has an infamously messy translation that removed a lot of its nuance. So people had been clamoring for a new coat of paint and a few touch ups to make it feel modern. When the Remake was officially announced, huge parts of the internet exploded. It took quite a few years before the remake came out, with it going through some development hell and changing its entire development team partway through production, but the final product released to widespread acclaim. Though there are many fans of the old game who don’t appreciate many of its changes, including to some major story elements, the game was a huge critical and financial success. All of that being said, it’s actually only the first of three games retelling the overall story of the original, and so we’ll see how the remake series looks on the whole once it all releases. Many of the trailers released for the game also were built with a supposition of people knowing details about the game. In most gaming circles, FF7 is a pretty ubiquitous title, to the point to where even if someone has never played it, they’re likely to know at least one of its major story beats, which essentially functions as Video Games’ parallel to Star Wars’ classic “I am your father” moment. It’s a moment that I won’t spoil, but for many people was their first experience that stories in video games could be darker and more complex than the “simple children’s entertainment” that it was very much still commonly viewed as at the time. Basically, the game is a very big deal.

"j" is "Japanese". "more than.a remake", technically, it's a sequel that hides itself as a remake. But the "remake" was basically a guise it wore, until the subtle twists in the plot unwind into the realization that the "present" (or the past from the perspective of the film/sequels) is being altered. For a comparison, think terminator 1, then suddenly watch Terminator Genesis while thinking it's just a remake. The Terminator Genesis movie is technically the fourth/fifth movie in the series, it's both got events set in motion from after the 3rd movie happened, but is set mostly during the events of the first movie. FF7 remake did the same thing, and it's next part rebirth is going to roll along further exploring the events of the original game while these new events and alterations from the future continue to take place.

More than a remake is right. On the surface it looks like it follows the story of Final Fantasy VII, but as you go through the game, you quickly see that events happen differently to the original story and characters know things they shouldn't. In reality, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a continuation of the story that came before it as the 6th full entry in the Final Fantasy VII series. To answer the question at 9:34 "what does that mean?" Final Fantasy games are Japanese Role Playing Games or JRPG's for short. JRPG's are notorious for having long story runtimes. A safe estimate for Final Fantasy games (minus FF11 and FF14 as they are MMO's) is around 40-50 hours to run through the story. Of course, games vary, FF15 is on the shorter side with about 30 ish hours and FF12 is on the longer side sitting at around 60. The line about having to fit the game on two blu-rays is about the fact that if you buy a physical disc copy of the game, the game will have 2 discs.

JRPG : Japanese Roleplay Game Broadly speaking, JRPGs have become known more for having pre-defined characters with set traits and personalities, whereas Western RPGs tend toward customizable characters, where the player determines the character's mechanical function and moral alignment. There are exceptions to both, of course. (Source Google)

I'm not sure if others have mentioned it before but the Final Fantasy series is sort of like an anthology. While the games may use the same kind of creatures, magics, and themes in each title, the worlds, characters, and stories are completely separate from one another. You wouldn't need to have played any of Final Fantasy 1-6 to understand the story of 7. This is why Final Fantasy XIV trailer you watched seems so different from these trailers for the Final Fantasy VII remake.

As an author, you may enjoy some of the Shakespearen elements or chatacter troupes presented in any Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy IX, for example, is one of those classic games. While it's far from interactive fiction because you can explore a world map and explore areas, the story itself will keep you really attached to the characters even though there is no voice acting. Again, I'm talking about Final Fantasy IX, not FF VII nor FF VII Remake. For example, the character of Steiner in FF IX is accustomed to duty and very prejudice against class and he is faced with this dilemma I said Shakespeare earlier. Well, I don't want to spoil anything. Even I were to say the D word, that may be too much information. All I have to say is that in Shakespeare, the protagonist suffers. But as an author, I think you will really get attached to the characters, just like you would a book with 150,000 words or watching a good movie. Yes, you are playing a video game and not reading interactive fiction, but you will feel like you won't want to put down the controller for hours. And as for Final Fantasy Remake, the proposed trilogy is far from done. Final Fantasy VII Remake came out in 2020. Final Fantasy vII Rebirth might come out in a couple more years And the third part of the Final Fantasy VII trilogy has not even been named and no one knows currently when it will be released. Probably near the end lf the decade as Square Enix does take it's time to make a video game.

1) Every numbered game in the Final Fantasy franchise is telling it's own story in its own world. So Final Fantasy VII is a standalone story, although it does have a fair number of sequels, and their titles are usually "Final Fantasy VII: ________" or "_______: Final Fantasy VII". The sequel to Final Fantasy X is Final Fantasy X-2, etc. 2) Final Fantasy XIV is an ongoing online game, and I know you've done the original trailer, and the Realm Reborn trailer. I can't remember if you've done the Heavensward or Stormblood trailers, which are the next two in sequence. The two you mentioned are the last two in sequence, at least until a new expansion comes out.

The remake is very similar and very different from the original Final Fantasy VII. But it’s just as good as the original. One major difference, other than the seeming alternate timeline, is the breakdown. The original game had about three CDs worth of content and was a single game. The remake is episodic and the one you looked at here is just the first chapter. Btw, since you asked about what was meant by it being the average length of a full Final Fantasy game. The shortest game in the series is the first one at 17.5 hours. The original Final Fantasy VII was about 38.5 hours if you just focused on the story, doing minimal side quest content. 100% completion of all side stuff from the original Final Fantasy VII was closer to 60 hours. And there are still non-MMO Final Fantasy games that are longer.

I'll be your huckleberry on RPGs. There are several types of Role Playing Games (RPGs) -- While most games are pretty straight forward, RPGs are basically games where you can build up or assume the role of a character who can then interact with, and affect, the environment in different ways. It's more involved and has a lot of branching paths, options and encourages exploration. Plan to dedicate at least 40 combined hrs (or more) playing these types of games. They are a huge time sink. Region specific: JRPG = Japanese Role Playing Game (these are RPGs developed by Japanese developers- Your Final Fantasys, Dark Souls etc) WRPG = Western Role Playing Game (These are developed by western Developers . USA, Canada, Europe etc-- Examples: Witcher, Elder Scrolls etc) Then there are the genre-related modifiers: ARPG= Action " " "( These rpgs focus heavily on action for their gameplay) - Dark Souls, Witcher, Diablo etc. TTRPGs -- Table Top " " " (These were the original, old school rpgs we used to play in person at a comic shop or a friend's basement lol. Typically juston pen and paper with dice, little figurines and a dungeon master narrating stuff.)-- Example Dungeons and Dragons. CRPG= Computer " " " (Computer RPGs were named as such in order to differentiate them from the original table top RPGs-- these days it is used to describe RPGs that are very story driven and have a lot of dialogue choices you can make --and in most cases have a topographical or isomeric view like the older genre-defining rpgs that were heavily on computers) --Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter nights, Planescape Torment, Pillars of Eternity, Divine Divinity etc.. SRPG or TRPG= Strategy /Tactical/Turn-Based " " " (these rpgs focus on strategy or tactics--You are given a turn to plan your actions in a sequence of events over a limited time and hope for the best outcome against your opponent. Then it's their turn to react ----kind of like chess) - some games in this genre are valkyria chronicles, Fire Emblem etc MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online " " " (where you play the game online alongside many other gamers---Example Rune Scape, Eve Online, Guild Wars and of course, world of warcraft)

This is what we grew up with in the 90s back in the days of PS1 :D lol - As of now, I can see how this game is somewhat of a parallel of our own planet, and our lives IRL. Earth is a living entity, she has her own body as if it's a body of our own. Imagine your Human body as Planet Earth, and Humans like ourselves are Red Blood cells within that Human body. As they said in the clips you watched, this is a remake. The original was a proper gamechanger (no pun intended) within the gaming industry. The recent remake looks visually stunning but for story I think you could actually benefit from watching the original videos. The original also holds a scene which is one of those "Where real men cried"-moments. I dont think anyone who played it was untouched by it..

I'd love to see you react to the story and lore of this specific Final Fantasy game (each entry is a unique story though some supporting characters are reused as tropes despite being unique individuals each time). One of the issues with restricting yourself to trailers is that the more story there is in game, the less story there is in the trailer, with it being replaced by hints and easter eggs and subtle references. Where as games with little story in the game, like valorant or league of legends, use trailers and shorts to fill in plot and character backgrounds to engage with and retain players. I play games mainly for story, then the challenge, so I prefer games like FF7 which build worlds and a cast of people you care about, then advance things and change them in the next act. So yeah, I'd love to watch you react to the s5tory of FF7

For context Hannah: you need a video that does a recap of the whole story. These trailers are made for people who know the game, therefore have an idea of what is happening, and that's why it's hard to follow. They are made with the intent of those, who have context, to view. Basically, we need to get you a video that explains the story as if you are a newbie. Also, the J in JRPG is Japanese. It's because Japanese style RPGs tend to play different from other RPG types and its an easy way to identify a type of game.

Most games like this are 20-80 hours long. Not sure how long the original was but Midgar was about the first 1/4 of the game so if 6 hours was the original like they say then 24 hours not including side content. When he's saying simplified, the original was more like timed chess, if that makes any sense, so it gave the player much more time to think. In this it's more like basketball so some stuff didn't translate well.

Some of those trailers really rely on the viewer being familiar with the old game. Like the 2015 trailer, I freaked out when I saw the huge sword and blonde hair because I knew who it was but if you've never played the old one and never saw the CG movie the made in the early 2000's (which also requires the viewer to have played the game) you'll be kind of out of the loop on a lot of the easter eggs and plot points they hint at in these trailers.

JRPG stands for "Japanese Role Playing Game" which was a genere of RPGs mostly associated with Japan, as opposed to "WRPG" (western RPG) or "CRPG" (Computer RPG). These are kinda outdated terms as there really isn't that big divide anymore and the names were a bit reductionist in the first place; Japan was producing just as many WRPGs as they were JRPGs (tho these were less likely to get published in the west ironically) and not only was the west making some JRPG style games, but thrre were also big differences in design philosophy between the US and Europe. The basics of JRPGs (vs. WRPGs) were as follows: 1) A much bigger focus on telling a story, often linear, with predetermined and -developed characters, with planned structure and dramatic arcs and a lot of dialogue. While WRPGs focused much more on character customization and player freedom which, especially early on, had to come at the cost of a carefully crafted plot or well developed characters. This is probably a result of tabletop RPGs getting big in Japan on the back of replays (transcripts of tabletop RPGs sessions) and gamebooks (basically "choose your own adventure" books with rpg mechanics like stats and rolling dice and such, something that was mainly imported from the UK). So Japanese players assosiated RPGs more with the stories they produced rather than the "make a character and do what you want" attitude in the US. Interestingly, now RPG podcasts, that are basically the modern audio equivalent of replay books, is becomming a big part of the RPG scene in the US. 2) JRPGs tended to stick to the older, turn-based, "you have a party of four or so charaters and then pick what they do from a menu on that character's turn and only when you have picked does it go to the next character/enemy/etc" style of gameplay, while WRPGs were much quicker to adopt real-time and action-game controls, dropping the "you control a party of people" stuff in favour of just having one character that you control. 3) JRPGs tended to be made for consoles and so all your buttons had to fit on a controller (which in turn was part of why they favoured big menues that you pick what to do from; didn't need a seperate button for everything you could do just pick it from a menu). While WRPGs often required a keyboard to play with different actions given their own key, no menu needed, which made things a lot quicker to do (as long as you knew what all the keyboard keys did) which in turn made it easier for them to adapt to more action oriented, fast-paced gameplay (thus point 2).

- First video: fancy visuals, minimal information. They don't call them 'teasers' for nothing. - Second video: "Hey, you know that thing from 20 years ago that was TOTALLY part of your life, and you can recall any part of in specific detail as if you had just seen it an hour ago? ...You don't? ...Well, what are you doing here? This trailer is for _real_ nerds!" 😛😛😛 - Third video: "Why yes, I do remember that thing! And so will everyone who watches MY thing! ...Wait, you don't? Well, what are you doing here?" 😛 Joking aside, I don't actually think that gatekeeping was anybody's intention. A lot of trailers for Japanese games seem to be constructed like that in general, even if they're wholly new and original titles. Though the third video might have benefited from some side-by-side footage of the original game, if only to help the audience visualize the comparisons it was making.

Well, making games, especially AAA games, takes a long time. Often there is a short render tease trailer for announcement, then nothing, until the marketing really picks up and the "real" trailers come out. For FF VII REMAKE and many other games it becomes even longer due to delays. In this case, the game was first announced with this first trailer at E3 2015, but it was released in 2020. Announcement trailers can be even earlier in development, and not even reveal anything. For instance, Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls 6 with a 37 second "trailer" showing the camera fly over a landscape with the sea and dome mountains in the background. And then they showed the text "The Elder Scrolls VI". However, according to a recent (April) leak, a possible release of the game can be anticipated for 2025/2026 - a leading German games magazine is less optimistic and deems 27/28 more realistic. Admittedly, 10 years before release is an extremely early announcement, but 3-5 years is somewhat normal in AAA territory. Some publishers take a different route, like THQ Nordic having announced ELEX 2 just about half a year before release and worked closely with developer Piranha Bytes who gave weekly updates on progress, announcing some features and stuff - simple, but effective AA marketing. And Devolver Digital is known for sometimes announcing a title at a convention, ending the trailer with "Now available". The thing is: Movie trailers can generally only be made when at least some scenes are filmed. A game trailer can be done without even being entirely sure about the sort of game the project will become. And especially if it is a highly anticipated sequel to a well known franchise, like FF VII REMAKE, TES 6 or, say, GTA 6, it is clear the publisher wants to build the hype as early as possible, especially if the last big game of the francise is somewhat older - and TES V Skyrim was first released in 2011, the latest entry in the FF franchise (not counting add-ons to FF XIV, as it is an ever evolving MMORPG) was Final Fantasy XV, released in 2016.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a Sequel and not a remake ... the "Remake" in the title is not a descriptor for the product but a cheeky little hint to sort of time travel shenanigans. At least two of the characters know exactly how the original Final Fantasy 7 played out and try to change that outcome.

Will you be playing any of them? First time here so forgive me if this was already answered. As stated elsewhere, the original Final Fantasy and FF7 are two of the most important games in VG history, although they're not my favorites in the series. FFIX takes that honor. The original, along with Mario, basically saved the industry. That's why it was called Final Fantasy. It was kind of a last ditch effort. If Mario and FF failed, there may not be any gaming. At least not as we know it today.

You should watch the reaction to FF7 remake & Shenmue like: "E3 2015 - Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue III Reaction Gametrailers (GT Live)" to fully understand the impact of those 2 games to old time players. Seeing other people flip out explains it better. FF7 & Shenmue is very very big & hard to explain. Its like being a Lord of the Rings fan & watching Peter Jacksons LOTR movies for the first time .. except you are also "playing" or "interacting" in the movies. FF7 is from a time where Arcade machines had been superior to home machines but home machines had just cought up so you could get a "arcade" quality experience at home, while at the same time 3D graphics was new & making FF7 look amazing cutting edge flashy looking for its time & delivering a 100+ hours deep story with included cutscenes & always looking fresh with new areas & things to explore (other games could easily also last 100+ hours just forcing you to replay the same area again & agian, but FF7 actually had continually new contents). The game was very large for a ps1 game spanning 3 cds that at the time was kinda rare, especailly as you have to remember its a console game & has to be 100% error free tested as you cant just go in & patch it like today.
