Non-Indigenous: $25 | Indigenous: FREE!

One of my children was sent home a notice from primary school that riled me up a little bit. It read: “Hearing screening will be provided to Indigenous students in Prep to Year 3 at our school. There is a small fee of $25 for our non-Indigenous children.” I’m getting a bit tired of all this. Not only is this not fair, it’s essentially racist, is it not? Is it not providing advantage to one group of students at the expense of the other students? Quite literally an expense! All based off what? One’s bloodline? A simple test could be performed by switching the roles. “Hearing screening will be provided to non-Indigenous students. There is a small fee of $25 for our Indigenous children.” People would be outraged! And they should be. It’s morally wrong, is it not? Then the opposite is morally wrong.
It doesn’t even make logical sense. It’s essentially grouping all Indigenous folk into one basket and declaring that they can’t afford the hearing check. Whereas non-Indigenous families are assumed they can afford it. I think we all rationally know that at least some Indigenous families are not poor, and at least some non-Indigenous families are struggling to make ends meet. But yet they still have to fork out the $25, whereas a well-off Indigenous family get it for free? It doesn’t make any logical sense.
Of course, I understand why the Government are doing it. They want to show they’re helping Indigenous people. But the proof is in the pudding - They’re not helping! All the stats show that despite all this money that’s been pumped into Indigenous welfare, it simply hasn’t helped. Just look at any of the statistics: High levels of unemployment, extremely poor health outcomes, far shorter life expectancy, and high levels of incarceration. And I think we all rationally know why. When you give people stuff for free constantly, when you treat them like they can’t look after themselves, then a certain proportion of those people are simply not going to do anything in their life to better themselves. It’s a disincentive to work or contribute to society. As long as you fit into the prescribed ethnic category, you get free stuff!
An analogy would be a spoilt teenager. If your teenager spends all day in their bedroom playing computer games, and you continue to buy them new computer equipment, new iPhones, you give them all their favourite foods whenever they want, we all instinctively know what the result would be - an entitled brat.
Now I’m not trying to be mean to our Indigenous brothers and sisters. Obviously some Indigenous people go on to be very successful and don’t feel hard done by by society. I just want everybody in Australia to be able to live their fullest life. But by dividing us up into two groups based entirely on our ancestry, with one group receiving more benefits no matter what they do, well that group will become entitled: “believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment”. It will create, and has created, a sense of victimhood. We’re giving you all this stuff because you have been wronged in some way. Even if you haven’t been wronged, just because you are of a certain bloodline, we’ll treat you like you’ve been wronged. And all it’s doing is creating generations of perpetual victimhood. And when you think you’re a victim, what do you do? You constantly look for somebody to blame, and you don’t try to better yourself because you think that the system is rigged, and the world is against you.
Look, I’m not saying we should never help people. Of course we should! If a person has a severe disability for example, well a moral society will help that person to the best of their ability. But that surely shouldn’t be dependent on one’s ethnicity, should it? Whether you’re Indigenous or non-Indigenous, it shouldn’t matter, it should be based on your need. If you’re able-bodied and don’t have a job, we’ll help you look for one. If you’re old and can no longer work like you used to, we’ll give you a pension. But just because you fit into one ethnic category should never be a reason to give you more than others who don’t fit into that category.
So I think the solution is simple: Do away with all this Indigenous-only support. I think it’s a disservice to Indigenous people. It makes them feel like they can’t look after themselves, and constantly need the Government’s assistance. It’s quite disparaging really. What would be much better, would be to help people based off their need, not their ancestry. People who can contribute towards society should be encouraged to. Treating all Australians equally will go a long way to fixing Indigenous relations. This current system of constant handouts has failed.

I have known several “indigenous” people over the years who enjoy taking every handout and taking advantage of every scheme Governments have introduced ... and believe me ... they didn’t need financial assistance ... once I worked with someone (ginger hair, fairer skin than me) earned far more than me but because he had about a “20th bit of Abo blood in him” (his words exactly) he will take everything offered ... it’s just so disappointing and sad that those who can stand alone financially, are happy to take money that should be going to those who can’t 😞

You've just said the exact same things that Pauline Hanson said decades ago and continues to say to this day and all she ever got was the racist label. When we lived on the North West Slopes there was a toy library traveling around the small towns and villages, it was indigenous children only. Hats off to the local headmaster who saw black and white kids going to school with empty bellies, he put on free breakfast for all who wanted it. His reward was to be so badly beaten that he was hospitalised and was almost blinded. The man kept doing good regardless.

The Australian Human Righst Commission definition: "Racism is the process by which systems and policies, actions and attitudes, create inequitable opportunities and outcomes fro people , BASED ON RACE." It certainly would appear that the school is in BREACH of this ruling in their actions based on race. Might I suggest you question either them or the Human Rights Commission.

You're doing a lot of squealing, but not much truth telling. Governments do not lend or fund anything.. they supposedly distribute money they take off Australians. Government are just administrators. So while you lot are hating on the rest of us, have a think about where the free services really come from.

You have the Aboriginals in the outback mostly in the north of Australia.A large number have never been to school and many cannot speak english.Then you have the ones who assimilate and live work like most middle class Aussies and you have the bludgers who do nothing other than get drunk take drugs etc. Some ignorant Aussies attempt to put all Aboriginals in the third category. A large part of the Aboriginal Government Assistance should focus on the first category in my opinion.

When my children were in high school, Indigineous students excursion fees, were free. There were times when my children couldn't go, because I didn't have the funds (electricity, gas bills, rates, etc..), Two working parents...So unfair, I wasn't impressed. That's why I voted no.

we keep on hearing how wonderful aboriginals are. if thats the case let them earn their keep like the rest of us.remote communities are a different thing, but the mostly white aboriginals in towns and cities that enjoy modernity should pay their way like the rest of us. i think its time aboriginality was redefined, some one with a black fella in their family numerous generations ago, hardly qualifies as an aboriginal in my humble opinion, the likes of lydia thorpe for example.

@@magicjohnson3121 All Australians are indigenous if they were born here, only 25% of our 27 million are descended from either convicts or first settlers! So the other 97% owe the 2.5% Aboriginals absolutely nothing, and the first "settlers" here were European! The "First Nations" are the ethnically mixed multinationals, first migrants to Australia, they were here first! Aboriginals are not a single pure race and were never "A Nation", but many separate tribes - all Aboriginals are "mixed race"!

Collect a group of like minded parents. Claim you are all of indigenous heritage. The school would then have prove you weren’t indigenous. In doing so you just accuse the school of racism because they are denying your heritage.

I am not allowed identify as Aboriginal, I'm a Tasmanian and apparently they were "all" massacred there! 🤨 (I just checked and there are now 30,000, that's odd! 😲) As we are all descended from either Africa or Siberia, all racism is ridiculous, it's cultural upbringing and actual racial mix that counts! 😏

A lecturer at UQ once told me that discrimination to address disadvantage was not morally wrong, in fact it was wasnt just morally correct it was not even a moral question. The same lecturer told my class of education students, in a course on indigenous knowledge, that we were not entitled to ask questions we were just to be quite and be spoken at.

Had a similar story years ago when Armidale had a Teacher's college. We were herded into the auditorium to listen to an Aboriginal guest speaker who proceeded to rant and rave on about whites. Very colourful language very derogatory language and we had to sit there and take the abuse. I must say the message was quite clear. All you whities can go screw yourselves. 1:30. 1:50. Every time I see Indigenous Community images I get reinforcement about the unwillingness of Aboriginals to see the "litter" they create and ignore around them. In comparison, other countries eg: South Africa I see Mothers that feed and Care for their Children with huge Pride. Children with pure white shirt and clean School uniform, polished shoes, all produced from a home made of mud and wrought iron. The term Aboriginals have for benefits $ is "sit down money". They will never have the desire to better themselves because there is no need to. So successive generations claim disadvantage using white man guilt for Colonial actions dated back to 1780s. At what point do we insist on an EFFORT from Aboriginies to join the Society ? To date they are assuring us they do not have the will to become members of Society.

Probably only about 1/2 of those claiming would pass the test and considering the value is up around 40 billion a year we just pay a direct value to those who make it past and never pay a cent of that ever again. Instead funding is diverted to those who need it and respond to aid rather than a bucket full of holes.

Had this abo youth come into my workplace during the school holidays with a delinquent group and asking for free stuff whilst being on a new gen phone speaking badly to their mother/caretaker and demanding stuff, this one in particular was shocked when I replied sternly with "no". They then asked: "why not?" in a dumb spoiled tone to which I replied: "If you want something, you pay for it, that's what you do as an adult." Still thinking there was a chance, this kid continued to rudely push the panhandler routine to the point where I just said: "We don't do handouts here, and I am not rewarding your poor behavior, especially given the way you are speaking to the other person on the phone there. Not exactly representing yourself or your people well are you? Move along now." They need to work on themselves and so does the person on the other end of the line, it's a culture thing where there is no discipline due to giving people what has not been earned, you end up with drongos that never learn and remain complacently stagnant which unfortunately gives a bad rap for the rest of the ethnicity. For this reason I voted NO when it counts and I don't care if that is or was 'racist' to some, for I believe in meritocracy no matter who you are, not whatever victim mentality some people and groups want to use to elevate mediocrity.

I grew up in an indigenous community, I wore shoes with cardboard in the souls, a vegemite sandwich for lunch, my aboriginal mates had new Nike's and went to the tuck shop. Yet I worked when they went down the river swimming and kicking the footy. I do feel sorry for them as the governments approach has created a life of dependency. I have family who are DOC's workers and many indigenous kids do it tougher. My tougher life drove me. So for me it is not about education, it is about motivation. How we go about that is the solution and different for each community. Jonathan Thristan is doing some good work.

He was on $140 an hour and one day an aboriginal house needed light fitting $20 cost 15 minute job under 10 mins total travel. Later saw the invoice to the aboriginal corporation who has a cozy relationship with the only company to coordinate repairs $875. Started checking other receipts same picture challenged his boss more spent more the aboriginal corporation needs more money. The gravy train is the aboriginal cooperation the more they spend the more money they need allocated. Hugh money funnel at taxpayers expense whilst at ground level all that was supplied $20 light fitting and under 30 mins labor and travel. After he seen the way it really worked he quit against his ethics.

I have no issue with aboriginal people having their hearing tested I have many friends who are aboriginal my issue is that a lot of the funding provided does not reach the ground in remote community's he loved teaching the kids that were keen changed their lives teaching skill they could use boosting confidence. The other community people were getting sick from the water its what the people wanted fixed art gallery is secondary to clean drinking water. Bob Katter had a group of aboriginal people that wanted to set up a market garden business grow vegetables serve local community's create jobs and money but he couldn't get business approved mabo title hunter gather status holds prosperity back need to be able to use land to improve lives with decisions made at local level not aboriginal corporations with CEOs with $800k salary's and set service providers taking it all then wondering why things are not getting better more autonomy and rights to self empowerment is needed in remote areas. In the city aboriginal people adults and children get far better access to jobs training health care this could have been handled hearing test at $25 for our students any child that is disadvantaged or has a prior recognized hearing issue it will be provided without fee. @@kamama822

This is why people who have never understood the value of money, purpose, achievement etc, who win the lotto will be poor again. Handouts only drive people into further dispair.

I am one that struggles with that and how money is created and why we are going down a dead end road of sea mining and renewable energy. Should I try and take in the entire picture. I did see a documentary about how in the 70's nearly 70% of business was done by small businesses and in this day and age it's now about 20%. I know I've gone off topic here but I feel the entire system is broken.

Keep on digging and find out who has place that rule of $25 charge and none for natives... It is important to STOP THEM because they are not listening to the voice NO from Australians.....

Absolutely RACIST! Voted NO to "the Voice" and will continue to vote no to all the handouts and free rides for ANYONE. I'm disabled and qualify for a pension but I've refused to take any handouts and have spent a great deal of effort time and money on staying employable so that I'm contributing to society. To be honest I'm fed up with my hard earned tax dollars going to people that don't deserve it.

The entitlement is real, i was on a Melbourne tram recently and witnessed a drunk indigineous lady sleep through her stop, after the driver gave ample time and pulled off she screamed her head off for him to stop then n there, when he refused for safety reasons her next resort was to scream, " BUT IM AN ABORIGINAL". The entitlement is too high.
