One of the fun things in kpop is that idols can have solo careers _without_ leaving their groups! This is Kai's third solo album, all released since EXO started their military enlistments (prime solo and unit activity time for any boy group), and later this year he'll also have comebacks with EXO and SuperM (SM's bg supergroup with members from EXO, Shinee, NCT and WayV). His debut minialbum KAI is still one of my absolute favorites in kpop. Rover comes from the original song, Mr. Rover by Dara which is about driving over to hook up with her fuck buddy, "Mr. Rover" (he drove a Land Rover, I think?). Obviously SM changed the lyrics _a lot_ for this version - and added a lot of the production stuff you liked - but the "Rover rover rover, I'm coming over, over, over" was too catchy to swap out.

Kim KIng Kai Dance Genius. He did a ballet training from his childhood years and it shows up. Classical ballet training does great things to a dancer of a K-pop group.

It is Rover because that means someone that wanders. Kai's main group is EXO (present tense) and they have a concept story that runs through their MV's, concert videos and has hints in their songs, including those by sub-units and solos. Very briefly (their story is in fact incredibly complex) EXO are from another planet, they have superpowers and are fighting the Red Force. When they debuted, they were very self-conscious of the whole superpower thing, especially Kai who, as Centre and one of the Faces of the group, was often highlighted in interviews. Off stage, he is incredibly shy. Now, Kai embraces his power and plays with it in his own work. His power is teleportation - he is the wanderer of the group, he is Mr Rover.

The original song is Bulgarian, if you want to you can check it out. It's by artist called Dara - Mr. Rover . You can definitely hear the Balkan style in the beat.

About the conceit of this music video - - Not sure if u are aware that Exo has their own storyline where exo members are aliens from Exo planet and all the members have superpowers. And that storyline is visible and connects all their mvs including their solo songs by pointing out either music video concept, lyrics or even choreography. Like they literally use their superpower thing in their choreo as well. Now, Rover means wanderer who travels or wanders to different places. & Kai's superpower is teleportation.. As kai needs to travel in different places in different timeline, so he needs different id which is shown in this mv. And this mv also includes personal life story of kai. Kai used to be a ballet dancer and u can see in the mv that one of his names in the id is Billie Eliot because Kai was inspired to be a ballet dancer after watching that movie.. So there was ballerinas too. And the lyrics kinda connects with the actual story of Exo. Plus it also kinda towards the haters who can't be happy for Kai's success and is always ready to shade him.. I love how the lyrics simply shows how haters keeps spreading false news about Kai but he's confident that he'll slay it no matter what 😂.. You should react to Mmmh by Kai. You'll definitely love it.

I'm unsure if it is the intention but there is a kids game called red rover where two teams stand in a line holding hands across from eachother and you take turns saying "red rover red rover send __ over" and said person has to run over and try to break the chain! Could be a reference to that!
