'Sup Deon, I discovered your channel a couple months back and recently subscribed on my new channel. I checked the comments here and on your solo reaction so that I wouldn't hit you over the head with info other people had already told you. Maria is Hwa Sa's Christian name. If you look at the MV at timestamp 1:39 she has the word Maria tattooed on the back of her neck (it's real). In the MV Hwa Sa is black haired and Maria is red haired. Every part of the video has meaning tied back to Hwa Sa, her struggles, her personality, her journey, her unwillingness to give in, etc. She stands against the status quo of Korean beauty standards. Hwa Sa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. To borrow from some other well worded comments: "The message of “Maria” and its music video are very much linked to her sweat and tears - Hwa Sa has been a constant target for online criticism and trolling for years. Hwa Sa crouches in a corner with sharp pencils aiming at her like daggers, a metaphor for all the cutting comments that have been thrown at her. Maria is the strong personality of Hwa Sa, take the clip when she had blood on her clothes and she was feeding the haters on the table with hearts and brains, accessories, pearls, etc - there is a clip when the people wore red masks which symbolizes they are so blind, they don't see how much talent she has. I love this song and agree that it's an amazing single for Hwa Sa, she is so talented and so badass. Looking forward to more reactions. I think it’s about how she isn’t fake and hasn’t had plastic surgery. There is a lot of pressure and a lot of people have plastic surgery and there is pressure on women to be thin and weigh a certain amount to even be allowed to do kpop. Like they weigh the girls and if you aren’t a certain weight you aren’t allowed to go on even if you have a great voice.
