The best Donna Anna ever. I had listened to many sopranos, live and on record, but in 2005 in Tokyo, during the Vienna Opera Japan tour that year, I could her live for the first time and I was so impressed, like never before by a singer. She was a great artist.

Rispetto il lavoro della Netrebko ma e' lontana anni luce da avere una voce mozartiana. Un'altra Donna Anna da sogno e' stata Fleming al Met con Terfel, diretti da Levine, 2000...meravigliosa!!

ops! sorry for the typing error, I meant to say "in THE early 60's" Yes she was probably in her mid 30's when the recording was made. Makes me sad when I read the rave reviews of Gruberova, Interestingly it was Callas who said many years ago that Opera was a dying art, I think it's well and truly dead now at least when it comes to appreciation of what great singing is all about.

+cameronpaul Sutherland was a great Mozart singer. The legendary Bruno Walters came out of retirement to conduct her Donna Anna after he first heard her sing it.

Vette gaddia I think overall her voice was too big for Mozart but the role of Donna Anna suited her very well especially when she was young and the voice hadn't darkened as it did by the late 60's/early 70's.

cameronpaul Are you aware that far larger voices than Gruberova sing Mozart? Sutherland, Moser, Price. Gruberova has a small, pleasant sounding lyric soprano. She can never sing Verdi or Puccini because she is not a spinto as the three sopranos I named above. Anyone who thinks Gruberova has a large voice have not heard her in person.

Vette gaddia I think you misunderstood my meaning. I meant overall Sutherand's voice was too big for Mozart. Yes I agree Gruberova has a much smaller voice than the sopranos you mention. I don't actually find her voice very good at all but that is of course a personal opinion.

à 1.14 les attaques sont molles et fausses et ce n'est pas le seul passage (4.02) Elle prend les notes par en dessous. Je n'ai jamais compris l'engouement pour cette cantatrice qui pour moi est loin d'être la meilleure. Perso je n'adhère pas.

How painful and how laboured! Just listen to Joan Sutherland (YT) in her early 60's recording with Guilini conducting and you will hear how this aria should be sung. To think Gruberova gets an ovation at the end - just shows how the standard of singing has declined!

tut mit leid, das ist m.E. keine große Mozartstimme. Sie hat früher eine sehr gute Konstanze gesungen, Zerbinetta u.ä, auch. Donna Anna war, denke ich, nie so ihre Sache. Zuviel hörbare Anstrengung, keine schönen Farbe, auch musikalisch zu manieriert.

If you think this is dirty, I wonder what do you think is clear. I have listened to the "legendary" recording by Sutherland and she didn't sing it any clearer. I can't hear a note here which wouldn't be perfectly in tune or in time. And her voice is beautiful even in the highest notes, despite her age.
