@@privateer9181I've never knew what they are either and I was born before the movie was made (1978). @@adrianaheiler9794 : Dying pistachios red originated with a Syrian importer named Zaloom. The red-dyed pistachios in the US came primarily from Iran until 1979. After the 1979 embargo on Iran it pretty much ended imported pistachios into the US. Since the 1990s about 98% of the pistachios sold in the US come from California.

@@robbob5302 Many years ago (late 80's) I worked in the radio industry in London. A new company was forming a new radio station aimed at an all women audience, presented by all female presenters. They wanted to call it "Radio Viva". 🤣 It took a lot of laughter from the majority of the current (80's) radio stations to persuade them not to call it that. The amusing thing was that on my radio station, over 60% of the presenters were women, and they got that it was a bad idea straight away, (obviously been hanging around us men for far too long!)

Those aren't candies they're eating in the car. It's pistachios. The shells used to be dyed red for some reason. So the big red pile outside the car door are the ton of pistachio shells he tossed out the window. Non sequitur: I've been watching this since it came out and I was 14. I didn't know then this would be a classic. My favorite scene is with the student driver. Stephanie sure learned how to drive that day. She also became a badass. The faces she makes crack me up to this day. Shout out to the driving instructor as well.

The actor who played the driving instructor was the very famous Academy Award winning Shakespearean actor John Houseman who was the director of various Shakespearean Playhouses, etc, as well as co-founding The Mercury Theater group with Orson Welles when they caused a panic in 1938 with their radio version of War Of The Worlds where they convinced their audience that Earth was really, truly being invaded by Martians, and also part of the production team behind the famous film Citizen Kane. He also used to do a whole lot of TV commercials in the 80's for Smith Barney brokerage and investment bank. I've never heard how they got him to do this little cameo here because it went totally against type for the kinds of ultra serious parts he usually played through his decades long career.

Hello Nick & Quynh!😊 Quynh always looks very lovely!😉 What they were eating in the car was actually red pistachios. It used to be very common to buy pistachios that had the shells dyed red. Typically your fingers would turn red from eating them, but if you ate that much your lips could turn red too. Al was played by Tiny Ron Taylor who was 7 feet tall. The two sequels are very funny, too. Great fun reactions to the original Naked Gun film, Guys!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

OJ did do other movies. I recently re-watched the Towering Inferno and he had a brief role in that (which I had forgotten about). I think the red stuff they were eating were pistachio nuts. They used to dye the shells red (I guess they sold better that way) until they found the red dye they used for foods caused cancer. Anyway, the red dye would get all over your hands and face when you ate them. That's the main reason I wouldn't touch them, even before the news came out about the cancerous dye. I'm not sure, but I think they might have dyed some green and sold them that way, too.

It was not candy they were eating. It was pistachio nuts. Back in the day, the shells were dyed to make them more appealing. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it was done with a dye called carmine, made from pulverizing the cochineal beetle.

James Brolin (Josh Brolin's dad) also starred as well as Elliott Gould (whom you've likely never heard of - he was big back in the day). It doesn't really matter, but the people at the beginning are: (clockwise around table) 1. Fidel Castro - dark green uniform and cigar - former leader of Cuba 2. assistant to the main antagonist of the movie 3. Yasser Arafat - white/black headdress - former leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization(PLO) 4. Mikhail Gorbachev - guy with the birthmark on his head - last leader of the Soviet Union 5. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini - guy at head of table with black headdress - former leader of Iran 6. generic Irish Republican Army(IRA) member 7. Idi Amin - African man in military uniform - former leader of Uganda 8. not sure - generic bad guy? 9. Muammar Gaddafi - tan military uniform - former leader of Libya Basically every bad guy in 1988, according to the US. If the scene were done today, it would probably feature Putin(Russia), Kim Jong Un(North Korea), Xi Jinping(China), Ali Khamenei(Iran), and Bashar al-Assad(Syria until a couple months ago). 0:35 - There is no definitive answer about the title, but it's meant to invoke the police drama series of the 50s and 60s. A probable inspiration is a TV detective series called _The Naked City._ The more relevant reference is the subtitle: From the files of Police Squad! _Police Squad!_ was a short-lived comedy series created by the Zucker Brothers after the success of _Airplane!_ It applied the formula from that movie to the same police show format I mentioned before. The series only lasted 6 episodes before it was canceled. Why? because it was TOO FUNNY!!!! Some TV exec decided that the viewers would get frustrated with the show because they would be missing jokes because they were too busy laughing at the joke before it. Apparently this guy never heard of the concept of 'replay value.' You can see the series on KZbin. A few years later, the brothers got to resurrect the concept as the Naked Gun movie series. 1:47 - That's Mikhail Gorbachev, the leader of the Soviet Union before it's collapse in 1991. He spent much of his term trying to make peace with the west after the long animosity of the Cold War. This scene implies that that was all just a front. 5:39 - When I first saw this movie (edited for television), I was still too young to REALLY get this joke, but I had _some_ understanding of what they were going for. (I thought it was supposed to be a butt, not tits.) 23:54 - They were eating pistachios. Companies used to dye them red because they thought it looked better.

The guy with the birthmark was Gorbachev one of the last leaders of the old USSR, he was popular because our government promised if he agreed to tear down the Berlin wall that we would not take NATO one inch closer to Russia. Needless to say our government lied

The "Naked Gun" sequels are great, but I'd like to see you check out "Police Squad," the 1982 TV adventures of Frank Drebin. There were only 6 half hour episodes made; apparently, the network didn't think audiences would sit still for a show they had to watch constantly to catch every joke. Treat yourselves (and us) and watch "Police Squad."

Top Secret 100% (my first spoof - I've never been the same), Loaded Weapon (Samuel L Jackson) is a spoof of the Lethal Weapon films, Hot Shots is a spoof of Top Gun and Hot Shots 2 is a spoof of the Rambo movies. If you've seen the originals of those 3 series, please watch HS!

You guys are so young that I'm not sure whether you know that the opening scene in the movie had all those bad guys that he punched in the face and then fell out the window. Well each and every one of those people were a person that was at that time, Leaders of terrorist organizations or even terrorist countries per se. So it's a lot to us that saw it. When it came out, it was doubly funny because we knew each character because the actors they got and the way they dressed them. They looked perfect so we know who they were. Anyway, no biggie. I just was wondering because most young people wouldn't recognize any of those characters by sight.

H wasn't a comedic actor. He was a serious, dramatic actor before all these comedy roles. That's why he played every role so seriously and why it works so well, because it's dry and Witty.
