Originally it was planned to be a full series on adult swim, but valve couldn't meet the deadline adult swim set for them on the pilot episode (Expiration Date) so instead it was released on valves own channel for the Love & War update and the idea was never revisited.

Some fun facts: - In meet the scout, when he says "brother, I hurt people" and pokes the camera, a smudged finger print appears on the lens. Its a subtle but really cool detail. - The song in meet the pyro is 'Do you believe in magic' by The Lovin' Spoonful. - There are purchasable cosmetics in-game that give you 'pyro-vision' (allows the player to see Pyroland, the whole rainbow-y cute world that pyro sees in meet the pyro) as seen in meet the pyro. It pitches up everyone's voices up and changes the appearance of the maps. - The unicorn in meet the pyro is named Balloonicorn, and they are the mayor of Pyroland. :) - Most of the mercs actually have real names. Pyro and Spy's names are just listed as "unknown" which makes sense lore-wise given who they are. (Mentioning this since you asked if heavy's name was really heavy weapons guy)

these videos were meant to showcase the tech of the time, given the lack of a proper trailer for promotion. you can see how Heavy's video is focused on his face and expressions... 15 years later, we got Mass Effect Andromeda... so, go figure, how revolutionary this was. by the time we get to Medic, it's a whole comedy sketch. I recommend also the lot of videos from CrashMaul, Winglet, MechaFourth, Condoriano and ItalianNinja, and the Saxxy Awards. fan-made animations are top quality in TF2.

Fair warning, if you ever want to start playing TF2 always start with the community servers and stay far away from casual. There is a huge hack bot crisis going on in the casual servers, hundreds of bot players using aimbot, spamming text and voice chat with vulgar stuff and ads for "bot immunity", and even calling vote kicks on innocent players, all with the intent on making the game unplayable. If you want a recommendation, Fortress Films made a 2 hour long horror sfm (short for "Source Film Maker") movie, based on some of the lore of TF2, called "Emesis Blue". It is really good, and actually quite unnerving at times. There's also LazyPurple's "How It Feels" series, going over, in comedic fashion, what it is like to play the various classes (though we're still waiting for a Medic video). He also has behind the scenes videos on his various problems with using the sfm program for his videos.

I disagree in terms of Valve not taking themselves seriously with TF2. They were very intent on making an FPS game that was both fun, and concise. The game went through a few iterations before landing on the design we know today, and it very nearly wound up looking like something indistinguishable from a Call of Duty or Medal of Honor clone. The class-based system came about after other motifs just didn't work leading Valve to make the game lighter, more fun, and less grounded. They took inspiration from games like Quake for the gunplay, and put a lot of effort into the character designs to make them distinguished, and recognizable from one another even at a distance. Throw all that in with the revolutionary for its time physics engine from Valve and you wind up with the chefs kiss of satisfying gameplay in a shooter that has withstood the test of time. Much of the lore and story that came about was an afterthought. While the universe TF2 takes place in is absurd and hilarious, at its core Valve was intent on only one thing. Making a good game.
