Elephant snake The snake called "海豹蛇" ("sea leopard snake", translated by many websites as Enhydris bocourti), accompanied by a list of dishes from it, occupies a solemn place among the creatures on display outside a hotel in Guangzhou
Elephant riper, also known as elephant-carrying snake[2], ripper snake (Scientific name: Subsessor bocourti, synonym: Enhydris bocourti) is the only snake species of the genus Subsessor in the family Homalopsidae, they are Commonly raised for snake meat.
This species is endemic to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Also reported in China, but probably because they escaped from consignments of snakes imported into China from anywhere else in Southeast Asia.
Habitat
In the wild, this snake lives in swamps, shallow ponds and other stagnant water environments. Their diet is mainly fish, but can also eat young frogs.
Characteristics
They are larger than other water snakes, with some weighing up to 7-8 kg. In particular, the snake's meat is fragrant and the ratio of meat per unit body weight is much higher than that of other water snakes. A female elephant snake can give birth to 7 litters. In the first litter, there are only 6 - 8 children, but in the later generations, the number of children increases gradually until the last litter can give birth to 40 children.
Elephant snakes like to eat fresh, non-rotten, non-scaly animals: tadpoles, frogs, catfish, baby eels, worms. When training snakes to eat fish with scales, dead snakes also get used to eating them. The suitable temperature for the life and development of snakes is from 23 to 32 degrees Celsius, snakes living in freshwater do not like brackish water. Elephant snakes do not have venom, but are very dangerous because of their aggressive nature and ability to react very quickly when meeting prey or enemies. Elephant snakes can live for 10 years.
Their bite is both deep and painful, causing a lot of blood. Moreover, snake teeth are broken and located right in the bite, need to remove snake teeth and disinfect to avoid infection. Snakes attack and eat prey 1.5 times larger than themselves, because their mouths can be opened very wide, because the bones of the upper and lower jaws in snakes do not stick together. The mouth continues to expand and the prey is gradually swallowed into the abdomen. Wherever the prey is swallowed, we can see it clearly. After swallowing the prey, the snake will find a hidden place to hide waiting to digest the prey, sometimes it lies for up to a week. When the prey has been consumed, it continues to look for new prey. Many studies show that snakes digest their prey faster in water than on land. Elephant snakes usually catch their prey at night.
Breed
Raising snakes costs little because it is not necessary to invest in building a barn, depending on the conditions of each household that the organization raises large or small. Farmers can release snakes in pots, pots or crates. Snake food is also easy to find and easy to care for. Therefore, snake farming is suitable for households in rural areas because they can take advantage of their leisure time to raise more snakes to improve their lives.
Raising elephant snakes is not difficult, in addition to the cost of building a cement tank with a height of 1 meter or more, ensuring the minimum water level is 0.5 m, with a valve system for water supply and discharge, at the bottom of the tank lined with a layer. With a thickness of about 20 - 30 cm, on grass, water hyacinth creates a natural environment for snakes to breed and develop, it is important to keep the water environment unpolluted. Elephant snakes rarely get sick, mainly because the water is not clean, they don't grow grass so that when the solid waste is discharged, it gets dirty. Snake farming tanks mainly grow water hyacinth to absorb all organic fertilizers to create a clean, disease-free snake environment.
Food for snakes is live catfish such as catfish, pelagic fish, catfish.. but only once every 10 days. Fresh food at the rate of 3-5% of solid weight, eaten daily, depending on the strength of the snake's appetite, increase or decrease so that excess food does not rot the water. The food is catfish, when feeding the snakes raw, don't cut the prongs, but leave it like in the wild, if you feed the snakes today, if you can't eat it all, eat 2-3 meals and the snakes will eat it all. Regarding breeding snakes, around May-June of the lunar calendar for mating snakes, the rate of 50% male snakes and 50% female snakes will be raised to avoid premature birth (no children), choose parent snakes with weight. from 800-1,300g for spawning. Selection of breeding varieties must be uniform, without deformities, and agile.
