Kang, you put so much character and truth into your expression of Rodolfo. So endearing to the character and the story. You have a wonderful dark timbre to your voice that is so easy on the ear. The emotion pours from your soul into your voice as you embody Rodolfo. One can see that you have tremendous respect for the composer's intent. Opera is far more than the crescendos when there is no soul and, unfortunately, there are few who truly have that ability. An ability which is often cultivated in and through suffering.

This is beyond glorious. Kang Wang is the lyric tenor I've been waiting for. I haven't heard a lyric tenor like his since the 1970s.

Amazing. What a sound and consistency. Rich tone, great dynamics, tremendous phrasing and top notes. I love this voice. Hoping his dance card is full because everyone should be hiring him. He even overcomes stupid staging that puts a tenor on his face and then his knees to open such an aria! [Where do they find these stage directors?] Hoping some day to hear him live.

The second clip is a film production which can be spliced and re-record. Quite different from a live stage recording, so not a good piece to use to compare. Also, although Tetelman has a very similar timbre, I find his voice characterisation of the examples you give here, far less emotionally nuanced than Wang's. Hence my comment earlier here that opera is more than just voice technique. Sure, the talent and work on refining technique is part of it, but singing is a soul expression in the first instance. When the voice becomes the tool to express the soul and those two meet, you touch other souls and take them with you. The characterisation must serve the character and the story. Take Maria Callas for example. Her acting and soul immersion into the character compelled her voice in a sense to do the unprecedented. It was not her technique that made her an icon, but her passion. Wang has all of the acting skills (passion), voice and technique. Take for example the wonderful decresendo @ 01:10 and the sustained power @ 03:37 throughout all of the notes. To me Wang is the better allround performer.

@@marcleysens7716 thank you very much! What you described has always been the “philosophy” of my singing/acting too - striving for technical perfection but always to serve the music and express the soul. ❤️

Singer's technique are similar in this age. More important that Kangwang sings into the audience heart and leaving a reliable memory.😊❤😊
