The idea of an American gin is to dial back the juniper (gin must have juniper) in order to let other flavors come to the fore.

Proper English gin rules. I'm a patriotic American. However, I prefer English gins. The only American gin I've found that measures up is Sly Fox, from Upstate New York. Beefeater is the standard by which all others should be measured! Thanks Bobby for another great video! You have the rare ability to entertain while informing!

Hi Bobby, fantastic channel you got here. Love your straight forward and non-posh way to describe what you experience with the spirits I was wondering about one thing. You did not mention sloe gin? Is that because you consider it a kind of liquor gin? And bonus points for not putting Plymouth gin in is own category, as there is only one, and then it is not much of at type? :) The reason it got is own category is probably because it was specifically named several times (20+ recipes) in the legendary cocktail book "The Savoy Cocktail Book" from the 1930'ies. where all the other gins were just "london dry" or "old tom" -no brand mentioned. (I do love Plymouth gin, and always have one at home) Looking forward to see more great reviews... Keep it up :) Cheers from Denmark

Thanks Gunner MacIntyre! It always lovely to hear that people are enjoying my videos. 😊 It’s a good question and yes, I would consider it a gin liqueur. I don’t actually know much about it to be honest so I might be wrong on that. I was also mindful that I didn’t want to make the video too long! So I just stuck to what I consider to be the main categories. Thanks again for your comment and welcome to my channel 👍😊

Hey bobby, I've tried monkey 47 recently and it blew my mind with its depth of flavor. Now my hendricks taste a little blend. Do you think a tanqueray, beefeater or the botanist will be as good? Great job with the videos by the way. Can really feel your enthusiasm and passion coming through your vids.

hey replayagain! Thanks ever so much for you lovely comment! Yes Monkey is a very big flavoured gin and I can understand how it made Hendricks a bit bland. Beefeater and Tnaqueray are great but the flavours won't hit you with quite the same force as Monkey. You might prefer Beefeater 24 or Tanqueray 10 as they are more intense versions of the originals. Also, You should definitely try Gunpowder Irish gin as it is similar in taste profile to Monkey. Hope that helps and glad to have you onboard!

I noticed you didn’t include any barrel rested/barrel aged gins in your list. Maybe they aren’t as popular in the UK as they are becoming here in the states, but I find them really nice and unique. I find they add oakey/whiskey flavors to the gin and with some of them the oak adds a sweetness akin to Old Tom gins without having the added sugar.

Bees This is a really good point which was also made further sown the thread by Caleb Kessler. I definitely could have included it as a category but, you’re right, it is a littler rarer over here and hasn’t really taken off yet. Thanks for letting me know that it’s popular across the pond. I will definitely try to get some as I think that would make a great video. Welcome to my channel Bees and thanks contribution. 😊👍

Hello my friend, it would be interesting to speak more about the different ways to make gin (steeping, infusion, vacuum distilation...), there is a lot of different techniques to extract botanical flavors and I think it’s very interesting. Also, you could try to make your own gin by infusing botanical in a neutral spirit. You could even do a video testing a « do it yourself » gin kit, that would be fun. Cheers

Hi Bobby, I’ve been looking to get a new gin, and I’m torn between getting a beefeater, Sipsmith or a Plymouth gin. Between the three which would you say is the nicest according to your taste?

Wow Adam, that’s a tough question to start the day with! It really depends on what mood I’m in because they are all equally great gins. It would probably be between Beefeater and Sipsmith. I think if I had to make a choice I’d probably go for Beefeater but if you ask me tomorrow I may well say Sipsmith, they are that close! It’s a great choice to have as whichever way you go you will not be disappointed. Hope that kind of helps ! 😊

I recently got into the realms of gin and my favorite bartender - who happens to be a gin enthousiast, owning over 200 bottles of gin - served me a Copperhead Barrel Aged Limited edition a while ago. I mixed it up with a little bit of elderflower I had left from the previous round and he nearly fainted hahaha. He told me that even though it's a London Dry it's best served neat. After my second try (this time without the tonic) I realized it's probably in my current top 3 gins so far: right below Monkey 47 and just above Nolet's.

@nononsensegindrinking5152
@nononsensegindrinking5152 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Angelo Elimelech That’s a really good question. It is slightly less dry but technically it’s still a london dry. I think there’s definitely a bit of clever marketing going on there. In my opinion anyway! 😊👍
@JasminMiettunen
@JasminMiettunen 4 жыл бұрын
No Nonsense Gin Reviews I'm not a gin expert, but apparently Nathan O'Neill is, and according to him it is technically a style of gin, and while only one distillery produces it, it wouldn't have to be from that distillery to qualify, there just aren’t other ones making that style currently. “Plymouth was very special because it named in the Savoy Cocktail Book, and it was in 23 gin recipes in the book. It was one of the most significant cocktail books in the world and still is to this day. So to have the actual name physically in it, is very very important. With that, it allowed Plymouth to become very popular in the first part of the 20th century when a lot of gins were coming onto the market.” I think that is significant, since the book was published in 1930 and there definitely were other London Dry gins available, and even very popular, but Harry Craddock specified Plymouth on several occasions. Importantly, it wasn't just his favourite London Dry, because plenty of recipes did call for general “Dry Gin”, but Plymouth was special. euvs-vintage-cocktail-books.cld.bz/1930-The-Savoy-Cocktail-Book/62/ For example, this photocopy of the Savoy Cocktail Book shows the first recipe calls for “Dry Gin”, and the second one demands “Plymouth Gin”. I hope I don't come across as condescending or like a smartass, I'm just a history nerd and I happened to read about this yesterday! As a bit of a gin nerd, you hopefully understand 😊 Loved the video, I hadn't come across gin liqueur before! As a history nerd I don't have much experience actually drinking spirits, just an odd passion for cocktail history, so that was a great tip for getting into gin, thank you.

Plymouth was also classed in it's own right because they used to have the contract to supply gin to the navy and the MOD are really specific about ingredients and the distillation process. It also had protected regional status under EU law (like champagne, Stilton, Melton Mowbury pork pies etc). But as they lost the navy contract to Gordons and Brexit is happening neither of these things apply anymore so it's now just classed as a London Dry.

Daniel McAninch Ah yes, I’ve just realised which bit you’re referring to! This was my ‘cowboy’ American accent that I did when introducing American gin. It was meant to be kind of tongue in cheek and not representative of all Americans. I do lots of accents in my videos and I particularly like to mock the British accent (have a look at my Bathtub gin review). It’s only meant as a bit of fun so hopefully you’re not too offended. Check out my Brooklyn gin review where I do a more ‘normal’ American accent. Maybe you will prefer it?? Anyway, thanks ever so much for the comment.
