Video Summary:
Saltatory conduction is the propagation of action potentials along myelinated axons from one node of Ranvier to the next node, increasing the conduction velocity of action potentials.

when I was in high school I always thought "If myelin cover makes it faster, why bother having Ranvier nodes, when you can envelop the entire axon in myelin continuously, since it would be even faster, appealing to the statement of saltatory conduction.". Well i know why it can't be like that, put in an analogy of stairs: if the height of each stair is small, it is hard to climb fast (unmyelinated), if the height of each stair is ok, you climb fast (myelinated with Ranvier nodes; the melin extends continuously in the entire axon), if the height of the stairs is bigger than the height of your legs you can't climb it at all (myelin but no Ranvier nodes). In other words, the positive ions can do jumps (saltations) up to a limited length, just like one doesn't have tall legs to climb very high stairs. I hope I was clear to you.

With all the respect for your work and for your videos, which are usually very interesting, I really don't like this analogy. I think it could be very confusing, and in some way it could be considered exactly as the opposite of what really happen in an axon. Ranvier Nodes actually act "just" as repeaters, but the conduction between one node to another still works through the passive flow of current inside the axon. Staying with your analogy there should be still an horse running from one tower to another, but at every tower you can change the horse, so you can sprint every time. I know this is a less powerful analogy to present the phenomenon, but I think the other option is very misleading. Again, with all the respect, I hope this comment could be read as a try to improve the channel and not aggressive. Thank you

Hey, I am always open for healthy discussion. Regarding the analogy, we have light travelling between the towers. So light is equvivalant to hourse in what you are suggesting. So I would say we both are right. But even if we were not, all analogies do break at some point as you go deeper. Nice to talk to you.

The idea is clear but I also understand his concern. Your analogy seems to disregard the flow of positive ions in the cytoplasm. That is what he is bringing up. But it is a good heuristic approach to explaining saltatory conduction.
