I found it really hard the first time flying a helicopter on a screen. VR gives a much better situational awareness. For high time pilots flying a none moving sim can be disorienting.

You should add a section where he changes the settings to make them feel the most accurate they can be and then share that with the community so that they are learning with the most realistic environment possible. THAT kind of knowledge is invaluable to people actually thinking of learning to fly so they don't develop bad habits before taking lessons, or even while taking lessons. That will make better pilots in the real world which can only be a good thing.

That wouldn't really be of much use since the control settings you use depends on your own setup. I mean, even if you have the same exact joystick and throttle, his has I believe a 20cm extension which completely changes the stick behaviour compared to the same joystick without the extension. So if you used his curves on your joystick (with no extension), you'd be using the wrong settings.

just saying, I've flown a couple different types of helo's and am a rated pilot. the huey is very realistic. I've noticed that my other pilot buddies are actually pretty awful at the sim, for whatever reason thats beyond me, despite the physics being dead on (in my opinion) they just cannot grasp it, especially when they do not have vr and have limited reference

Hey Noob. Like you, I have probably spent more time in DCS just flying around and enjoying the aviation aspect of the game without the combat. It's great for that, and I enjoy the multiplayer servers that cater to those who want to practice formation flying, carrier ops, and aerobatics, in a multiplayer environment without having to worry about weapons being brought to bear against them. As far as your question about the realism of these games/sims and their fidelity, I am an Airbus A320 Captain, and I use the Toliss A319, and the FF A320 in X-Plane, along with some great hardware that replicates what I use in the real aircraft, to practice engine failures and other procedures that we never do IRL, to maintain proficiency. In days past, we would "chair fly", which means sittnig in a chair and rehearsing those procedures using our imagination. Now, I have what amounts to "chair flying" on steroids, in the form of a functional "sim" right in my house. My, how things have changed since I started flying many years ago! I enjoyed the video, and thanks to Chris and you for putting it together!

Huey pilot here. 32:42 That shake is perfectly modelled. When you are transitioning to forward flight, half of the rotor is in ETL and the other half is still in ground effect. That difference in lift is what causes that vibrations and it's perfectly normal. When you transition from forward flight to a hover goes the other way round, and its a good indicator of loosing ETL. The real Huey does not vibrate THAT MUCH, but you can feel it. I guess this is just a visual cue in the game. Nice vid.

I studied with the online sim group hovercontrol and had real world pilots showing me stuff alongside arm chair pilots.... I scoured their brains for detail as I am a man with Cerebral Palsy who has riden in aircraft but likely would not be allowed an intro flight in a helicopter... all that is to say Thanks Very Much for the extra time and effort that went into this one I ate it up like Lindor chocolate also check into Dodosim flight models they have done specific work on Hover and Autorotation realism ( Dodo sim is at the core of the hovercontrol organization you might find something you like there, you might not but, poke around see what you think.

Wonderful those peripheral controls!! As a Huey II helicopter pilot, I can say that the pilot put in a great effort and a great job, since he had not flown DCS; However, the "feel of the aircraft" in real life changes a lot, I also see that the inputs in the controls are very sensitive (not because of the pilot but perhaps because of the configuration of the peripherals), that results in overcontrol of the aircraft and that result in excessive manoeuvres. I love DCS but it takes some getting used to as it's not easy at all and it takes some practice to get the hang of it.

Truly the combination of your setup and the experience of the pilot makes this maybe the best video I've seen for home pit-builders. Well done and thanks for doing it! Suggestion - lower the virtual seating (simulated seating) position / rotate the virtual seating up a little? I think that's why he felt it was too nose-down? Then you could increase the vertical field of view a little if needed so he still has his ground reference points.

Im pretty sure the "pitchy-ness" he was referring to was the camera angle being so high and pointed down towards the front of the nose. If the camera was more parallel to the ground- Im willing to bet the sensation of being "too Pitch Forward" would be diminished. I had the same issue in MSFS flying fixed wing.

Very, very cool video. I love this setup. If I had any critique, it would be that the screens don't move with the motion, so there's a bit of a visual disconnect compared to what you're feeling. These are big screens though so I imagine integrating them would be a challenge and probably a risk to the screens themselves when you crash or set the chopper down hard. Otherwise this is super cool. TrackIR would probably help a bit if you didn't want to take the VR route if it makes you feel sick.

Awesome session. Learned a lot from him. As a fixed wing private pilot and long time flight simmer, I value the perspective of other pilots a lot more than that of just "gamers". I agree, VR makes a world of difference, especially with helicopters. My hovering (as well as my AAR and formation flying in fixed-wing), improved dramatically when I started using VR (Rift CV1) a few years ago! My current HMD is the Varjo Aero and the clarity in it is incredible! BTW, I just ordered a MPS-1 Blackbird for my NLR V3 seat mover, using your discount code. Now the long wait begins for it to ship, as well as my Virpil collective, CM3 and grip. I fly more fixed wing in DCS, but do enjoy the Huey and recently the Apache, which is why I decided to finally invest in a collective. Can't wait to fly the Kiowa and Chinook when they arrive!

Your comment towards the end regarding 'getting proficient with all the buttons, doing missions, etc' I found relatable.... Like seriously. I have been an aircraft geek for years. I am pretty sure I have played every flight sim ever produced at some point or another yet, it's just 'getting in there and flying' is really what I find most enjoyable. I have had DCS since... forever. I have never really done much with the mission editor, I have never played multiplayer, etc... lol One of these days, I'll figure all that stuff out but, for now (and probably forever) I just dig the flight.

Long question but please bear with me, I've had 5 strokes in as many years and have difficulty getting to the point. I got the chance to fly a B206 as an Air Cadet in 1985 - flight sims (DCS, MSFS, X-Plane) are my hobby BUT I want my experience when flying the likes of a B206, B407, B412, MD500, UH-1 to be as real as possible and that means getting a proper cyclic/collective setup along the lines of the Puma. But I just can't afford such luxuries so I have to make do with my existing X52 Pro HOTAS with the "cyclic" between my legs on the box of my Quest 2 and "any old box" to my left for the X52 throttle as my collective. I'm looking at getting the VIRPIL "VPC Desk Mount V4" (small or large) and combine it with their "VPC Mouse Mount Adapter V2" as a solution with the aim that at I can at least put my X52 stick on a "shelf" such that it is between my legs, rather than on the Q2 box between my legs or another box so that it is next to my right hip. I see from this video that the grip of your cyclic is actually quite higher than I can recall from my one experience flying the B206 in the '80s - I have mine such that the top of the grip is about level with my "belly button" (LOL!). Is that an accurate setup you have as I don't want to get a "solution" from VIRPIL that will place my "cyclic" too low down? It's been many many years since I flew that B206 and most of my brain cells have been deleted by the 5 strokes. Any advice (or a donation of superfluous free gear for that matter!) will be most gratefully appreciated. Best regards, and please take this request seriously, I'm 53 and not a "would-be" kid, I devoted most my life since 1987 writing the software of the HUDs for C-17, F-5, F-16 and Eurofighter, TRN for GR4 in Gulf War I and the fly-by-wire for B777. @@NOOBIFIER1337 I've found this video extremely helpful - with only using my archaic and unrealistic controls I've always thought my ability to control the UH-1 in DCS was much less than to be desired. But I can see that I am not actually that far away from having a good "feel" for the UH-1 without haptic feedback s you have with that fantastic 6DOF motion platform. I use the Quest 2 but I am let down by the GPU in my PC, I am using the RTX3060 which, when used in VR, is less than perfect, but better than my old GTX980. I have a long journey to go in terms of hardware but thanks to this video I at least have something to aim for - that's assuming I don't have a 6th stroke!!!

Love your Helo stories. Mine are less amazing, but my Lt. in Korea, his GF was a UH-60 pilot...on 3 occasions we went on whole-country bar crawls with a pilot. The only problem was? She LOOOOVED to try and get us to puke, and the crew chief promised dire consequences if anyone puked. SO the longer the night went, the more drunk we got, and she would NEVER let up! It was still the best bar crawl ever.

Real heli pilot here! I think sims are just getting to the point where a new pilot in school would definitely be able to get a ton of good "experience for expectations" while playing at home. However the big issue with it i think will be the ability to also form some potentially bad habits when doing certain flight maneuvers or just goofing off in the sim. and if it goes unnoticed back at school for a while it can then become pretty costly & difficult to break that bad habit!

When you get your VR configured, I'll buy your displays from you. You'll never want to use them again lol. Well, maybe keep them until SC gets VR... LOL. I'm a pilot in real life and I'd agree with your friend that simulators - even with VR and motion - are great procedure trainers and will save you time and money in real training, but they do teach you bad habits, that you'd have to train out afterwards. We use multi million dollar simulators where I work, and they are great, but the motion lacks in certain scenarios and can cause disorientation that you wouldn't get in the real aircraft. The motion (even multi million dollar 6DOF) also can't simulate acceleration/G loading accurately, which is where you get your seat-of-the-pants feel. All that said, home sims are amazing and I'm a DCS addict. Hopefully see you online some day.

I wonder what your millisecond response rate is on those monitors and if they're providing such a slow time that would explain why he gets so pitchy while trying to hover, correcting what he's seeing on screen but maybe a 60 millisecond response time he's seeing it too slow.

can you share your adjustment curves and what not? Because I was wondering the same, wether with the Apache I would have an realistic experience or wether it is tooooo touchy... you know.. when I buy such equipment pieces I really want to have an realistic experience and not some "well, that will serve its purpose" experience XD But yeah, it was good to hear the opinion of an actual pilot in that regard.

I’ve had a chance to watch some of this, and I’m wondering if the nose position can be adjusted by repositioning the head position in the cockpit. Also, it might be something that goes away in VR. I’m away from home, so I can’t test it myself.

Awesome Video man.Just seeing how much fun a real Professionel got with that was pure Joy. Great video! Will be watching the others. It looks like the pilot position is a litte too far back from the screen. Might help to move it forward. Also, as others have commented, track IR is a must for for flat screen, bot only because if allows the pilot to look around but also gives meausrs translational position the head which help with psuedo depth perception.

I also think you should try without the motion on the sim. I know I can’t afford it or have the space. So it would be nice to know what it is like without motion adding to the sensation. Kinda like a baseline.

The pilot does mention flying without motion in a simulator. Basically with the quality of modern graphics technology today, it is not as essential as it once was. I don't know how to copy a time stamp, but its about 29 minutes in.

If I had a real pilot over to assess my sim rig. I would really want them to get the controls, ergonomics, stick forces as 1:1 with their experience as possible. I'm sure they would need quite some time to get comfortable in sim before being sure of it. Since we don't have this luxury I would like to know if there is a baseline adjustment that most setups are off. Maybe at defaults they are all over sensitive etc. Kinda like recommended adjustments most simmers can make.

I did take this time to check this. I didn’t include that in this video because it bloated the runtime to over two hours. I got some feedback from Chris on how the Cyclic would have no cam and no spring. Just Drag Clutch. Same with pedals, no cam no spring, just friction. Overall, he had said the position and location and behaviours were 1:1. Thank you for your comments and feedback.
