Noodling aimlessly on my $3 practice guitar. I play this guitar for hours every day. I do all my technique practice on this with a sponge near the bridge to muffle the sound. When I take the sponge out to play actual music it sounds like magic. My hands are warmed up and the sound quality is fresh and clean, even with old worn out strings.

So many people commented on this old beat up guitar in my early videos I was beginning to wonder if anyone was actually listening to the music.

The guitar has character. I also have such an old piece. I might play with this once a year. And then I think that she's not that bad at all. I also have expensive guitars but mostly I play middle class guitars. And then I think how was it possible to spend so much money on guitars that you seldom play.

In the days when I played flamenco for hours every day I would never dream of using an expensive guitar. There are practical reason I never opted for an expensive (and well made) luthier guitar. My guitars were often in situations where they would get accidentally knocked or dropped on stage or in a busy dance studio. Some of these dance studios were really hot or cold places and temperature extremes are not good for a guitar body and would eventually result in a warped neck. Then you have flamenco party situations where there was no guarantee a guitar could be safe in a crowded room of wild flamencos dancing or playing in a confined environment of someone’s living room. For these reasons I always bought cheaper guitars. I relied on technique to get a good sound. I justified playing cheap guitars with the philosophy, "If you can play this piece of crap with a high action and inferior strings and make it sound good ..... you can play anything." A well made expensive guitar would sound like and feel like heaven after you put yourself through this sort of boot camp. The hand made guitar I play these days is my pride and joy. I would never expose it to the sort of rough environments like the early days. The only guitar that was regularly used during the rough times and actually survived is my $3 special. I also treat this guitar with respect these days, despite it's history and rough looks.

After such a wise lesson, there is only one thing to do make a donation. I also regularly fall in the trap of asking the artist which guitar he plays? For a moment I'm under the illusion that I will also play that way if I had such a guitar. Your lessons are really amezing, so I was happy to make a donation and hope that more listeners and students will folow my example. Greeting from Belgium.
