My dad bought an 08 F350 King ranch with the 6.4L when it was 3 years old with 60k. At 140k we had issues with the EGR filters and coolers. At first they tried to say the computer was bad. After getting it taken care of the truck didn’t miss a beat. Traded it in with 200k it spent most of its life towing trailers and equipment, it was a great truck for us.

Ya those engines are so complicated and they have so many things to go wrong with them . Ours blew both turbos had lots of overheating issues then stopped regening so the cat blocked up near solid so I installed a tune into it and ran great after that but kept throwing codes , still ran fine just threw codes so you never knew if it was going to break . Paid 57000 had it for a year put tons of money into it and sold it at the end of a year to a mechanic for $10000 who knew all the issues and was going to install a different engine. Bought another Ford F-350 but with the 6.7 litre engine had it for 5 years and not ONE issue. Now we just bought our last truck before retirement a 2020 F350 with the 6.7 and hoping for the best lol , good luck in your travels, new subscriber.

I had a 2010 f250 KR with the 6.4. Took off the DPF and the EGR coolers and replaced the up pipes with stainless. Kept the stock tune on it. Never abused it and never had any troubles. People run into trouble in 2 ways. Either they don’t delete everything and the emissions will ruin the motor or , they do delete them, put a super hot tune on it and double the horse power and expect the factory internals to hold up. I never had any troubles but the thought of injector replacement, turbo replacement etc just worried me to much. Traded it on a f350 cc long box 4x4 single rear wheel with the 6.2 gas and have never looked back. The new diesels with emissions will all have problems at some point.
@oldbearsden98194 жыл бұрын
That tech is lying his behind off. You just blew the forced air line off. You have to reinstall it. They didn't tighten the clamps and it was a simple fix then upcharged you multiple times. The 6.4 diesel didn't have seal troubles it was a simple turbo swap and they suckered you. Stop buying the Ford, go buy a Ram or Chevy diesel. Both of them are almost bulletproof. One thing raise that truck up and and then set your torsion bars to get rid of that squat. You are putting the bars under no load before letting the trailer down.

You're absolutely right. If this family every upgrades to a heavier trailer or 5th wheel, a 3/4 ton, well option diesel truck is not a very good choice as it's extremely limited on payload. Just check the driver's side door jam placard. If this family doesn't ever want to go much bigger with their trailer, the RAM 2500 with the 6.4L Hemi would have been a great contender with plenty of available payload and much cheaper operating and repair costs. Also, I'm surprised they didn't option for a Megacab configuration. Much more room for everyone in the back seat.

Beware of the Bosch CP4 hi pressure fuel injection pump. Mine blew 2200 miles from home, thankfully it was covered under the FORD extended warranty that I purchased with the 2013 F-250 in 2018. Dodge used this pump also during your year also I believe. The dealer had it for 9 weeks, had to rent a car to get home for $1460, then fly back to Spokane 9 weeks later to pick it up. The fuel injection kit was on backorder, and the dealer said will have to wait until it comes in. I went to work and found that there were 518 on BO. My attitude was was that there had to be a kit somewhere. After about a dozen calls around the country I found one for the dealer and had them get it transferred from a dealer in Oregon. Half way home to KY in the middle of Iowa the heat tube from the turbo blew off, found a dealer 20 miles away and the reconnected it and was on my way the next day (the original dealer didn’t reattach it correctly). Investigate the Bosch CP4 Pump failures on Dodge diesels. I add Motorcraft (Ford product) lubricant to each tank full to help prevent this from happening again. If you want more info , let me know.

Just purchased a Forest River Georgetown GT 7 with the 7.3 V8 and so far so good. Ford is outfitting all F53 RV chassis with the "Godzilla” starting 2020. The engine is dyna tuned at 350 hp 460 ft/lb @ 3900 rpm. Even gooder we can burn regular unleaded gasoline. Just turned 5000 miles weighing in at 24,360🤫 pulling a 3800 lb 'toad' (4 down) we're seeing 8 mpg. Have not tried the big hills in the mountains yet but no problem with the foothills. Engine is quiet and backed with a 6 speed automatic. Shifting is smooth and engage the "tow haul" mode and engine braking, from the natural compression of a gasoline engine, is a dream. Why not a diesel pusher🤔 you might ask? Because I'm a retired truck driver in a 24000 lb motorcoach and no longer driving a 'big truck' pulling 80000. 🤭 GOOD STUFF... BIG TRUCKS BRING IT...10-4?

I did a lot of research before I bought a new truck. We also had an F-150 we used to pull our 36' travel trailer. Too much for the 1/2 ton truck. The cab removal on the Ford really killed the deal for me. I planned on keeping the new truck long term and though it is ridiculous to buy something that requires the removal of the cab to do major motor work when the time comes. We ended up buying a 2018 Ram 2500 and love it. We have since upgraded to a 42' fifth wheel and it pulls it great. They all have their ups and downs. In my opinion the Cummins is a more reliable engine. With any newer diesel getting rid of the emissions is key to long term reliably. Godspeed, hope everything works out for y'all.

Doesn't really matter what brand, it is the diesel world...period....it is a costly lifestyle. Also, not sure who fixed the Ford but if they were worth anything they would have caught any of those issues fixing it the first time.
@WilliamStewart12 жыл бұрын
It really isn't though, most diesel trucks are pretty solid. The 6.4 wasn't designed properly and has a lot of shortcuts throughout it. It's a 100k mile truck on average then a throw away.

I'm so sorry you had these problems. The only thing you did wrong was buy a warranty. I only ever bought one one time and was disappointed. They are nothing more than ways to get people to part with more $$$. I haven't bought an auto warranty in 20 years and will never. Take that $$ and put it in a fund to pay for the unexpected repairs if/when they come up. If you're within your grace period, you may want to consider cancelling it. Good luck! For what it's worth we bought a RAM 1500 HEMI used for our first truck and have loved it. Rock solid. Hope you have the same good luck! I hear only good things about those cummins diesels.

Learned myself, the hard way, that warranty companies are like all others. They are in it to make a profit. They will deny any claim they possibly can. I’ll not ever get another “extended warranty”. Put that payment into a savings account and keep it for yourself. Beautiful RAM truck. If it has the AISIN, no worries. If it has the 68RFE, don’t tune it. If you leave it stock, it will last forever. The 68 is a much smoother driving transmission. The AISIN is a bit more robust, and is only offered on the high output trucks.

The problem with ram is the truck is terrible but the engine is good
@n2sport13 жыл бұрын
@@nativeoutdoors1780 Had an 03 and a 2020 ram 2500 cummins. The only thing that gave me issues was my own fault. Tuned Engine killed the original trans after 75k (my fault). Built the trans with goerend parts to handle way more than I was putting out and loved it, towed better than my 2020... Ball joints, yea large 35" tires on a RAM will do that. Rust they all do it if you don't do something to protect the fenders.

I bought an 05 6.0 F250 in 08. Drove it for many years...but it was EXPENSIVE! 2013 the trans needed rebuilt, so I decided to go with billet components to the tune of $6k, after all I’m going to keep this truck forever🤣 2014 the truck overheated and needed head gaskets done again. The truck was deleted and studded and still needed head gaskets. As soon as that happened I bought an older 7.3 truck and haven’t looked back. The 7.3 is louder and slower, but reliable! The last two repairs on the truck were $11k and that was enough for me🤣 Best of luck to you all in your travels👍

Haha, yes Preston I heard that doing all those things is the key. Once they're done the engine is super solid and will go for a very long time. The problem is: while it does make the truck solid it's not legal in all states and as much as we travel I don't want to worry about it.

You should post the name of the dealership , that performed the work on your engine. I am a long time mechanic and the things you pointed out as being loose and disconnected were not related to the new turbo blowing them off, that was bs . Whoever worked on your engine did not do the job that you paid for, regardless of how good or bad the 6.4 is. I love camping and try to stay positive about all the problems that occur while doing it, because it is my place of enjoyment. I'm glad you guys try to do the same, I enjoy your channel and attitude as well. Take care Bob I see you did get a deal from that dealership, which is what they should have done under the circumstances. Good luck with the Ram ,I've had two with no issues and currently own a 2020 1/2 ton ,great truck.

Currently ‘20 F150 4x w/bags, Hellwigs, Bilsteins towing a 22’ Nash using a Hensley Arrow (absolutely no sway). Hope the Dodge works well for you, quite a diff platform than your original F150!

We would have liked to but it was cost prohibitive. When we started our journey two and half years ago we were debt free (besides student loans). No payments on anything so jumping to a new truck with the payment would have been a huge change. In the end, with the extra money we sunk into the whole situation it would have been better to suck it up and take the crazy big payment back in Mar when we were ready to upgrade the F150. We just didn't want the huge payment. Now we have the huge payment anyway and it isn't even brand new. Gah! Hind sight is always 20/20

I’ve owned two Ram’s you’ll love them , but the motorhome we bought is a Ford E350, V10 which has driven very nice twice to Florida from California, I had issues with a ford van in the early 1990’s and ford wouldn’t back a brand new vehicle, so I’m gritting my teeth with this new purchase until I find a class c on a ram chassis. Blessings and prayer 🙏🏽 to your family , your an inspiration in the way you handled this , Godspeed in your journey

I owned a 6.4 several years ago, bought it used with only 40k miles and did an extended warranty. Almost immediately after getting home from the dealer in another state an engine light goes off. During the drive I lost all my coolant and broke the oil cooler. Luckily the warranty actually covered all the repairs after many hours of arguing with the dealer. Traded out of that truck to a 6.7 power stroke soon as I could.

I had a 2008 F250 with the 6.4. First thing to let go was the EGR plugged up and that plugged up the DPF, and Cat. 6400.00 Next was the high pressure fuel pump (Which they have to take the cab off the frame to get to it. I was quoted 12,000.00 for that. Ran it for a year changing the fuel filter with every oil change. Had a seal let go and fuel was getting into the oil and somehow took out #3. The quote then was 21,000.00 I sold it as is for 5,500.00 ad bought a 2019 Ram Big Horn with the 5.7 Hemi. LOVE the truck. Better mileage, quieter, better ride, and MORE bells and whistles.

Sorry to hear about all the truck trouble. Although I'm a Ford person. I don't brand bash. I noticed a clean exhaust pipe on the Ford which besides egr coolers still being on truck. The tune wasn't a emissions delete. Too much heat from extra fuel and boost for the emissions system on the 6.4. while had no problems with mine I also did emissions delete. I traded mine in 11 months ago for 2019 f250 gas. To get lower cost of ownership. And more cargo capacity. Three quarter ton Diesel's have crap cargo capacity. Good luck with the new truck. And we are waiting for next video. We'll be in pigeon forge first part of September. Impatiently waiting for that time to get here.

I feel your pain.. I have a 6.4 my engine failed while pulling my trailer for a camping trip. It is such a hard choice to make between repair and replace. I ended up having a new engine put in it and did the full delete and tune with several other preventive measures taken. It's been about a year and the truck has been fine but I still don't trust it. If you have peace of mind than you made a good choice with the Dodge.
@WilliamStewart12 жыл бұрын
Just sell it and get any of the newer engines, both 6.7's and the 6.6 are vastly superior to a 6.4 of you want a new truck. Ideally of you don't need to pull 20,000lbs plus get an older truck. The 7.3 Powerstroke and 12 valve cummins are the best in the business for going 500k plus miles with literally nothing.
@jcapen12 жыл бұрын
@@WilliamStewart1 You're not wrong Will. My deleted 6.4 is still running great and I'm kinda married to it. I have about 20k into the rebuilt motor and the truck itself is pristine. If it fails again I may go with the 7.3 gasser. I tow about 12k at the most. I would prefer a 7.3 PS but they are getting harder to find. A friend is considering an 01 for 32k with 98,000 miles. That kind of price for a 20 plus year old truck is insane. Nothing is easy anymore.

I also have another F-350 with a 6.7 and have put about 228,000 miles on it with zero issues. It is also the same color as your truck. My daughter and son and their spouses borrow that truck from us and follow us in that truck and trailer and it has had zero issues. My other daughter and son-in-law bought a Dodge 1 ton and have had several issues with it so far but nothing like what you guys have had. 😧 I’m thinking of trading the truck with 300,000 miles on it in for a new 2021 truck. May wait a little while to see how they turn out. Good luck! I always buy new with Fords extended warranty and have yet to use the warranty. I guess we have been lucky. Good luck and hope you guys get the dealer and warranty company by the ears and straighten them out!!! Got to hit the hay and be on the road by 5:30 a.m.this morning. Safe travels and I hope the universe smooths out for you folks. You folks have been through enough!!! Ron
