Regarding the shoe, I don’t think it had anything to do with the alien per-se, and was more a play on the old saying “waiting for the other shoe to drop”, an anecdote that basically means that Jupiter’s fate was sealed way back then. The other shoe “dropped” when he got his entire family and audience massacred in the most horrific way imaginable. EDIT: Actually, now that I think of it, it also sealed his costar's fate too. And it was her shoe.

I loved how every character in the movie had a different relationship with the pursuit of spectacle: (1) Ricky and the Sitcom massacre: Everybody was willing to smile and laugh for the camera despite the fact that they were dealing with a temperamental animal (2) Ricky and the Circus massacre: Everybody was willing to smile and gawk at an actual alien presence despite the fact that they had no idea if it really came in peace or not, and Ricky loved fame too much to stop chasing dangerous opportunities whenever it presented itself (3) Cinematographer: He was jaded for being recognized as having filmed the impossible, and he willingly gave his life for that one truly perfect shot (4) TMZ Guy: So determined to uncover the truth he wanted the camera rolling as he was dying, and he even scorned Emerald for trying to save his life (5) OJ and Emerald wanted to bring honor to their fathers legacy, and were so determined to capture the perfect shot they put their lives at risk to get it (6) Angel didn’t just want to capture the spectacle for fame or financial gain; he wanted to warn the world and hopefully save lives. That’s why when his life was truly in danger he focused on survival over spectacle

I never considered the bit about Angel. I think what confused me during the first half of the movie was how misleading it felt. There was a literal alien invading their land and the primary focus was to take a photo of it. For a moment, I truly forgot about the how dangerous it was until Angel said the words "[discussing the plan]...then we can save the world." He was the only character to acknowledge the alien's threat - everyone else seemed to see it for it's obstacles and how its behavior was jeopardizing their goals.

OMG I totally agree that this is the key to the meaning of this film; the alien acts out in much the same way as the chimp, so the film is about freedom from captivity and exploitation (amongst other things); the chimp acts out violently, the horse bolts, the alien rains blood and throws shit in much the same way as an ape; the message: when we trap, enslave and exploit for a quick buck, we have to face the consequences; once again, the "threat" in a Jordan Peele film is humanity's own stupidity (which makes him VERY Spielbergian)

The animal symbolism was interesting as well I think it ties in with the undertones of the exploitation over others. The species contrast between the characters also something for note. Example: Monkey vs cast, humans vs aliens, even Keke and OJ vs the microagressions of the white film crew. The film maker is shown watching old films of an octopus and crab fighting along with a large snake and tiger fighting to the death. Great thoughts. Em got on my nerves so much in the beginning and then I loved her by the end. OJ hardly looked anyone in the eye in the beginning beside his sister. His father had grown so much in status. He was looking straight at the sky in the beginning. At the point he was killed, he was speaking of one upcoming job that would be a big payday for him. He was killed when a projectile went through his eye. Could that have been an analogy of the many times people of color gained independence and their own wealth but were taken out by those who were threatened? 🤔 I loved how OJ didn't let the alien intimidate him in the end and he looked him straight in the eye. After watching a second time, I caught that the Gordy rampage lasted 6 minutes and 13 seconds, and then Steven Yeun's character mentions that the first time he saw the UFO with his family was at 6:13 pm. This could just be an easter egg but given the fact that the UFO effects animals' behavior, I think it makes a lot of sense.

I saw these characters as people trying to desperately record this entity. Pics or it didn't happen. Even that freaking TMZ guy on the bike, was more obsessed with his injury being recorded than his life getting saved. The damn mechanical camera guy sacrificed his life for the perfect shot. Loved this video and analysis, it made me see the film in a completely different light! One thing that may have been missed or might just be me overthinking is the surviving costar. As the protagonists clamour for the Oprah moment, seeing the Ricky's co-star reminded me of the 2009 attack of a woman named Clara by a chimpanzee named Travis that her friend owned. Clara had tons of injuries but most notably her face was ripped off. It was a huge story. Clara revealed her facial damage to the world for the first time on Oprah Winfrey show. I ended up Googling on a hunch and it turns out Travis the Chimpanzee had actually performed in commercials and been on talk shows (though the attack did not occur on a set).

Her name was Sharla Nash. I believe she went on Oprah long after the event after she had undergone a facial transplant. The interesting thing to note is that in reality she is blind and if this character is merely based on her no problem. In real life she would never have gone to the show because she would not have been able to see it. She would only have gone as a show of support for her friend. The woman who owned him wasn't keeping him as a pet. She was not a trainer which was part of the problem. But animals should not be used and entertainment anyway

WOW thanks for the thumbs up! I ended up making a video about ALL THIS AND MORE! Check my channel : ) So, I think that there's a huge theme of people playing god and trying to tame nature in this, and I hope people make the connection that Ricky's plot arc of being a traumatized child star is actually one of my favorite aspects of the film. On a much smaller scale, the incident with the chimp on the set of Ricky's childhood TV show mirrors the fate that befalls him. The studio tried to play god by putting a very dangerous animal in an acting role, and Ricky's onscreen family paid the ultimate price. We cut to OJ, who is extremely nervous of the ways that people around him might provoke his horse. Unable to communicate effectively, there's almost an on-set incident with the horse, who nearly decapitates an actress. Later, when we catch up with Ricky again, we see the memorabilia, the "Spectacle" that became of his childhood tragedy. He references a particularly "funny" snl skit about the entire thing, we see a mad magazine cover lampooning the event in a way that's nightmarishly close to home; a mindless ape in a birthday hat causing pure carnage on the set. Ricky's trauma is very specific in a way that sets up his fate with pitch perfect irony. This "monster" (the chimpanzee) was both the entity that made him famous, and took away that fame. Later, he tries to capture that same fame again, taming an even bigger monster. Instead of having his on screen family taken from him, he has his real family taken from him. They are also VERY unsubtle about the fact that his family are also his costars at the park that he's created. (As an aside, the twisted irony in that his co-star had her face mutilated by the chimp, only to face an even darker fate, is really effective as both a joke and a horror scene.) So the spark notes are, a monster took away Ricky's family, and then he grew up, made an entire new "show" with his NEW family, and all of that was taken away again, in his pursuit of spectacle, fame, etc. Then, OJ is able to tame the creature because he's really given time and thought into understanding it, which is the same instinct we see him using during the first act, warning the people around him not to spook the horse. He's the first to figure out that it wasn't a "ship," he notices that it's behaving like an animal the first time he encounters it. Meanwhile, Ricky's family only sees the tropes that hollywood has cooked up about these flying saucers. He lays out the merchandise, the little green men, the cliches, which makes him EXTREMELY unprepared for what's coming, which is NOT an intelligent race of aliens, but a very large very dangerous animal. There's also the recurring imagery of balloons, as balloons are what caused the chimp to go haywire, the monster essentially IS a balloon, the waving tube men are also inflatables, and in the end they're able to kill the creature with a balloon. There COULD also be a parallel between the birthday hat on the monkey and the flag that gets "put on" the monster. It DEFINITELY did not like being "leashed" and it retaliates by marking its territory (blasting their house with gore) and by throwing the decoy horse right in OJ's lap. It was sending a message. And like you said, just like Ricky when he was a kid, it's his submission and understanding that saves him. And THAT's just the "animal" angle. There's an entire OTHER discussion to be had about the creature's "Eye", which is STRIKINGLY similar to a camera sensor. The monster was basically a giant camera, with its mouth being the aperture, and the film has alot to say about filmmaking, but I haven't really connected those dots yet tbh.

Spot on review. I really have nothing to add although when the creature died, it looked like bits of fabric that could resemble a weather balloon. The creature reveals a jellyfish like form and considering we don't know much about the ocean, perhaps this is a creature we haven't discovered yet on land(or sky rather). Which could also make it have earthly origins.

Great video! I feel the movie gives the overall message of people looking at others pain. Say for instance as Peele said in his interview recently,a burning car at the side of the road and how traffic is prompted from people looking at this spectacle . The only individuals who can subvert that slow movement are those who simply don’t look at it. I think Nope is a social commentary on peoples need to look at events or things that in every way are terrible and shouldn’t be a spectacle. I also find the the “TMZ Guys” helmet to be interesting. An entire mirror with a singular hole. I think it’s meant to point to the fact that media reflects our actions and that whole meaning is to show that these actions can be twisted in order to create a spectacle that journalists, Hollywood, and media can see us at our worst moments and yet turn it into a story for others to consume.

For people to not understand the nature of the chimp scenes on a level of its meaning, makes sense, for them to not understand it artistically, makes no sense at all. Even if those scenes had no purpose, which is not true (the only reason why it works so well is because it has correspondence in a metaphorical way), you should still be at ease with the film because the scene is great. Its spontaneous, its thrilling, scary, all of that. And kudos to this gentleman for making the connection between the submissive slave and the predacious white slaveowner and the Black man and the alien. A flawless analysis in my opinion. I love hearing thoughts, and your theories here seem highly applicable to this story! As for me, I'm left thinking of one word, "ownership." See, humans don't own the Ocean, but end up polluting it with garbage - eventually killing its marine life. Yet, humans look to it as a food source! *Motivation is greed.* In this movie, the Creature has a brain and digestive system, but no soul - not unlike some people on Earth? LOL!

Thanks for the smart analysis. I thought I was the only one that picked up a deeper meaning early in the film about avoiding eye-contact. I have thoughts about OJ. The character's name choice can't be coincidental when we think of how he runs from the alien near the end. Still, at times, I was frustrated with OJ's slow pace of movement (i.e. his response to his father falling off of Ghost, his cadence in speech). I wonder if Kaluuya's portrayal is meant to resemble the kind of caution and the self-consciousness that members of marginalized groups (Black men in particular) have to adopt to navigate unpredictable and oppressive forces.

The movie is abt bad miracles that’s why keke Palmer said nope when Oj asked if there was a word for that it’s like how bad stuff can happen and we can make good things out of it
@theconsciousobserver68292 жыл бұрын
they abandoned the bad miracle narrative for spectacle. A bad miracle is a oxymoron that is very curious, but I think Jordan realized there is no sense in trying to make that contradictory phrase make sense. A predator isnt a bad miracle no matter the kind of predator it is. On one hand it sounds like praise of the predator and condemnation of the predator, which is shown in the film to a degree. But I think it is better that we just fear and hate the predator by saying its a "spectacle". You'll see in the commercials that they don't even say "bad miracle" anymore. Because it literally is confusing terminology. Prior to the film coming out I remember thinking, "What could a bad miracle mean? Is the alien granting wishes that seem good but are really bad? What is a bad miracle?" A bad miracle is nothing. It is two opposing words in one place at the same time. It makes no sense. And I think they realized that and therefore substituted it.

I took it more directly to be about exploitation if tragedy and mistreatment of the barely acknowledged film crew by the Hollywood studio system that doesn't really acknowledge the true power they hold. (OJ literally wears a jacket with the word "CREW" on it, so filmn crew is supposed to be at the forefront of your mind). Like his previous movie, Us, it was about the crew "rising up," making an appeal to better respect film crews who really make things happen, and denouncing the exploitation of tragedy, and disaster (there's also a bit about criticizimg viral clout culture, both in the entertainment industry and on social media). I didn't get a clear picture of the racial symbolism because I thought the saucer was silver, but with that little clarifying detail, the interpretation that it's another "whitey bad" movie makes some sense, although that would mean that Peele compared black people with chimps... i think it needed to be more focused, because it works as a commentary on the industry, but it just doesn't as a racial commentary. I don't know if it's your interpretation of symbols, Peele's handling of racial symbols, or my inability to square that element of the story, but I really don't think many od these parallels work when taken as a whole. The use of 6:13 in Ricky's encounters with Gordy and the saucer is clearly telling us to draw a clear parallel between the two, but however you inrerpret what means what, it just comes out really messy and a bit problematic in some ways that I don't think Peele intended, and it just doesn't communicate a coherent idea. Okay, sure, the saucer can be code for "white oppressor," but but the direct parallel we are meant to draw between the saucer and the chimp completely falls flat either on your end ofninterpretation or Peele's end of trying to use coherent symbolic meaning. I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong, but if you're not, the racial symbolism doesn't really work on that level. Thankfully there's so much more going on that you can ignore the racial politics entirely and come out with a much more substantive experience. I can appreciate an attention to detail and use of symbolism, but I think the story in and of itself needs to work independent of its symbolism. I think a lot of audiences have been trained to take things far too literally and having absolutely no education on how to pick up on symbolic meaning, but I don't entirely blame them for feeling that the story felt a bit disjointed if you were just taking the story at face value, and bith the racial and film messages don't really mix because it it sends very conflicting messages about how you're supposed to view Gordy and the saucer in particular. The ideas are there, but i don't really think they mesh together as well as Peele thinks they do (unless I'm just not "getting it" yet either). Very entertaining movie with a lot of tense moments, and I appreciate the respect for film crew, although the racial symbolism is a little eye roll inducing at this point. All in all, it was a solid movie, but definitely his weakest of the three movies, at least by my estimation.

My take on this is.. that animals can sense when something is environmentally "wrong". Could Gordy have felt the presence of the "alien" above them during the time of the incident? And once the balloons pop Gordy goes ape sh*t, literally. The upright shoe represents a possibility of the "alien" floating above them, waiting to devour the film crew. Steve Yuen's character then framed the shoe as part of his showcase, similar to how OJ had the coin that killed his father on display in his bedroom. Both reminders of twisted, traumatizing events.. I might be reaching lol

One thing that just occurred to me was that the goal in this movie of making an "impossible shot" of a wild animal was also accomplished by Eadward Muybridge in 1878 when he made the famous "Sallie Gardner" series of photographs that eventually led to the creation of motion pictures. And in this film, this "impossible shot" is eventually made possible by the direct descendants of the original jockey.

Something that stuck with me is when the filming guy said we are not worthy of the impossible referring to something no one is prepared to see, like the entity's true form if that is their true form that is, as it was established that the being could shapeshift or manifest itself into something familiar, like the flying saucer or something not so familiar like a weird weather balloon like thing, also the foreshadowing that all footage/evidence would be lost or so it seemed to be, except for the picture taken at the well which of course could not ever be considered as hard proof.

Thank you for your in-depth analysis. Oh man, I always get so pumped when a new Jordan Peele movie comes out, because of the layers, but with this one, I really couldn't quite get my head around it. I knew it was brilliant though. I didn't start to get it until I started looking at some of the analysis videos. Even still, I felt they were missing something because I was I guess surprised that he didn't tackle race from the perspective of a black man much in this one, or so I thought! Wait to find it! What I really enjoy about his movies, as a black person, is that he finds a way to explain common issues we experience regularly but not the obvious ones, he uses the ones that no one talks about. It's awesome. But sometimes when I go to see his movies with friends that are not black, they don't get what's happening and so sometimes they just write it off as a bad movie, but maaaaaaan they're missing out. :D Solid video man, this is the first of your videos that I've ever seen but I'm thiiiiiiiiis close to subscribing! I just watched the film and would suggest anyone having difficulty understanding the film to watch your review. I too as a writer found the film to be amazing. However, I wanted to add a little seasoning to your review…from a person of colors standpoint and potential key points you may have missed. I’m not typically a fan of Keke Palmer but I feel this film allowed me to understand her even more. Her character a multifaceted black woman, extremely confident, and unique exemplified how black women are allowed to move and be seen in society. However, the film allowed for a black woman to be vulnerable and protected by the black man. Something in which we see has become estranged. Her multifaceted personality and outgoing behavior is her desire to be seen in society. It took for her black brother to tell her I see you for her to fully fall into her true self and vulnerability. Also many black men struggle with providing eye contact. I teach my son otherwise as it is a sign of confidence and fearlessness. His timid behavior and lack of eye contact and submissive as you stated allowed him to be accepted within society. He truly feel into himself when he chose to stand for what the generations of men before him built. This film touched on black generational wealth and how the oppressors remind us that we never really own anything. It makes you think even beyond…as a human race were we truly the first beings. Let’s also talk about black people avoiding asking for help…and black people being founders of things and a white man attempting to gain credit after they trust him to film. There is so much to gain from this masterpiece including how the internet is a place to be connected yet we are all still so disconnected. The beauty about being a writer is about being able to share the truth in ways it remains disguised to those who fail to understand. Jordan Peele is a genius to depict black generational wealth, our strength and struggles and triumph within one film! It’s a must see! I never write comments by the way…
@kieonafairley13182 жыл бұрын
Oh and I forgot to add… for those who don’t know the symbolism of the black man on a horse is strength. They would say the most intimidating thing to a white man was a black man on a horse. They took pride in their grand father being that stunt guy and all he represented but we as the generation are moving away from that fight and reverting and falling back into the oppression not fully understanding and knowing our power. True power does require violence or reactions it is that moment when he was on the horse staring at the predator. Environmentally and animalistic ways to regain power is to attack, to kill, to conquer. To instill Fear is a way to keep someone mentally captivated by their own accord. That is what has been inflicted as a result of the willam lynch letter. And it has gone beyond hundreds of years. Most live in fear allowing others to do tact who and how they should love their lives.

I interpreted the Jupe interaction with the alien differently. I think he had a lot of PTSD and survivors guilt after the Gordy attack. He became obsessed by why he was spared while others were mauled, wondering if he wasn’t supposed to survive and tricked fate. He believed fate was going to eventually catch up and a violent wild attack was just around the corner. When the alien attacks him, he’s relieved in a way to finally meet the fate he believed he unfairly escaped and ultimately deserved.

Maybe it’s just me but those too things had me thinking .

There's a lot to unpack with this movie when it comes to white supremacy oppression. There's the white horse ghost who runs and eventually gets injured by a key=opportunity. The black horse lucky a main character as well...ok needs lucky to survive. The alien eating a inflated white big boy balloon....maybe represents the inflated ego that brings destruction and it's demise. Peele is big on symbolism... His main idea is exploiting people like beasts until someone pops. Oj behavior is very much tame like he's the one trained . He represents the crew...the people that work hard ...and make little money...like the tech guy at Frye's.

I think racism is a possible interpretation, but a weak one. It's one of the meanings embedded into the story, but only a stepping stone and not the point. I think the deeper meaning is the relationship of the audience and the spectacle, and about how looking at it and drawing yourself into it makes you complicit in it. In the end the solution not to be swallowed up whole in it was to refuse to engage with it.

One we’re focused on the wrong thing as a generation but have always been focused on the wrong thing as he would be the second part is told to the age of the music. Walk on by by Dionne Warwick added to the theme because no matter how you feel about it this is reality minus ego.

This video makes things so much clear Thank you sir! I had been thinking about the theme of how "exploitation is influenced by expectation" and this is the most important thing the movie displays. I remember when the first trailer come out. It was unclear what the movie was about and there was so much expectation on what it should be based of the visuals. This expectation robbed the movie's identity, because the viewers wanted to exploit the story to their advantage. So a lot of people thought NOPE would be Not Of Planet Earth but I think the true acronym is Not Obeying People's Expectations. A lot of the things in the movie go against the grain of what people expected. This is because when we expect to see something there is higher chance we exploit. A lot of the people who did that is this movie perished.

3:30 Holy fuck I was not ready for that dumb ass take. My jaw hit the floor at how stupid that take is.

Not stupid considering the themes made apparent in his other movies. Wouldn’t call it dumb-ass either. That seems sort of insensitive to the source material there. Also people interpret things in different ways. There’s no need to immediately shut it down. I’d like to hear your take, if you’re willing to share.

Hahaha yeah I mean everyone has their own interpretation but I was baffled when I heard that

I don’t know if I agree with it but I don’t think it’s far fetched at all. Get Out was literally completely about those themes, and so was the intro of the movie, you really think he’d just drop them like that?

@Lauren Coulston: Hate to say but it is a dumb ass take and it's blatantly racist too. I'm white and I don't want to eradicate anyone. No white person you've ever met in your life does. This guy is reaching and making up racist shit by saying this so I have to call it out. And honestly I think the themes of this movie were more focused on how media/people in general handle tragedy and monetize it. We lose sight of reality. That's a broad generalization but that's my take. @Piano Dan: You're right, Get Out was about racism. But I think it's handled with more grace and intelligence than most people realize: it actually addresses not only prejudice but how these "woke" white liberal types want to appropriate black culture and speak for black people as if they can't speak for themselves, which is also prejudice in its own way. Try re-watching that movie all while remembering that. It will open your eyes to a more nuanced message. It's part of the reason I actually gasped when this man spoke those words... It's so stupid and I know for a fact that Peele is more intelligent than this. Racism does exist but it's more complicated than "whites want to eradicate non-whites" and when we discuss it we should be careful how we do so. Also the creature is silver... Loved the movie BTW. It actually terrified me and had an epic spectacle feel to it. I recommend highly.
