I'm amazed that there was no mention of what Henry Louis Gates Jr said to Norah O' Donnell at the end of their segment that they were distant cousins in that they share a great grandfather or a Great-great-grandfather.

Would like to point out that it was usual in those times to work at age 12 or even younger in England also. She is wrong to stress it was religion it was need of money. My Aunties started in cotton mills at age 12. Catholics were not holier than thou in Ireland or they wouldn't be now checking the Catholic homes where lots of babies and children died. My mother had her left hand tied behind her back at school as it was pronounced wicked to use for which she never forgave the nuns. Whatever country your from if you were poor in those days you faced hardship. My mum was one of ten and whilst grandma was ill through pregnancy she and a sister were put in a workhouse and that was in the late 1920s.

Looks like Norah O'Donnell's grandmother may have come to the US via a group of female factory workers. Possibly she joined a USA-bound factory workers in Ireland probably to a new start-up factory run by Irish owners. The immigration page that shows her contains a list of young females all about the same age. She was probably paid to come to the US to a job already waiting for her and the rest of the women.

Except there were ads back then in the north that said "Colored person wanted, No Irish need apply."

Though she sat up there on our TVs during the pandemic ..., I just followed the rules of the script ... News should get both sides of the story and do investigating reporting ... but she has a background and she has children and she has chosen a job that history will show the truth that she just sat up there and read off the prompter and did what she was told to do so she wouldn’t lose her job because money was more important ... I think she’s one that believes that when you get to heaven you can take your U-Haul with all your possessions and not really show what your heart and soul is 😔
