Michigan State University associate professor of mechanical engineering Norbert Mueller describes his Wave Disk Generator, for which he has received a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to build a prototype new engine and generator technology that can dramatically improve efficiencies and reduce costs of electric hybrid vehicles.

After studying Pulse Jet engines I came to realize that shock waves are needed for it to run & found it burns much cleaner & better because of Shock waves.Everyone knows Pulse Jets are to basic to mount to much but I realize this man has cracked the answer to all other petrol engines problems.Well done buddy!!.If you want to see how important shock waves are just watch a Pulse Jet engine Run.

I agree! It could probably power a light motorcycle too. Electric is definitely taking over in cars though. At least 90% thermal efficiency, high and consistent torque. Only thing that's lacking is solid battery technology.

I think it has to do with the curves of the compartment walls. The shockwave uniformly hits the side convex to the ignition point, while the other side mostly deflects.

@Nitrozzy7 If it's pushing out the same amount of energy as a conventional energy, with 3.5 times the fuel efficiency, it has to sound beautiful. If it sounds weird, we can always turbocharge it. Beautiful.

This is really fantastic. I hope these engines can be produced and replace internal combustion. Yes, there are huge obstacles from Big Oil, but with enough effort and perhaps public support, this invention will make it through those roadblocks! Don't be sad that this is being invented "instead of" fully electric cars becoming the norm. Right now, most of our electricity comes from coal, so electric cars aren't all that clean. Efficiency is better until we convert to renewable electricity.

This engine is not designed to drive a car but only to power batteries. A car using this engine would rely only on electric engines for propulsion. It would be just like a Chevrolet Volt with a different backup engine. Electric engines by the way, offer very high and immediate torque, which is one of the things that make them more pleasant to drive.

There are other engines in the works that may do as well as this one; there is a definate advantage to operating at a constant velocity and having no drive train, this type of engine could be scaled for buses or train as well. Since this engine burns fuel it still does pollute.

OK, so this is really cool primarily because it could burn any fuel, the other stuff is cool but being flexible fueled is a really big deal. Most of our mileage gains(the next doubling or two) will be made by making cars lighter and more aerodynamic. Year 2000 car designs (hypercar) exist that get 100mpg but there are none on the road because car companies are afraid to make the jump from metals (low material cost, high machining cost) to composites (high material cost, low machining cost).

I don't see how a gas turbine is an emerging technology. It's different in some regards, but I can't see how 2.5 mil wouldn't cover a prototype. The engine isn't much more than what he had in his hand. It's a single stage compressor with a valve (valve not shown) that shuts periodically to create increased pressure and force from the combustion. The force or shock wave then drives the compressor. Just can't see why nothing really came of it for that kind of money...

Here is an interview from Michigan State University Oct. 2011: (won't let me put web address here), so websearch: 'Michigan State University Alumni Association' and when on their actual site type in "The Wave Of The Future" to get to the actual article. I'd like to see it running - in a car with me at the wheel and the ownership certificate in my pocket! This would reduce emissions in the greatest contributor of CO2 by maybe 70%. We can't just take the passive view that the oil and auto industries wouldn't allow it, and we should find some way of alleviating the employment implications. There is too much at stake to hang back.

@konatv Well, considering they didn't even show up with more advanced types or even PARTIALLY working prototypes, you can assume that it didn't have enough throughput versus consumed energy. Throwing 1 billion at a prototype that he directly stated at 0:37 that they gained efficiency by theory would be blatantly moronic. Yes this means testing was involved, but not much considering there are no direct numbers to compare, nor which type of energy is fueling it, so there is little to go on.

If I were a betting man, I would bet that this never pans out. Looks like a perpetual motion machine from the 1900's. It would only cost a few bucks to put together a prototype to test the concept's claims, if it's such a simple design. Also, combustion without need for a radiator or other cooling system? That makes me even more skeptical.

We are working on the way this generator this is like similar to a tilted wheel through space in other words like a f-15 closes it's flaps indicates if it is can go up or down or sideways left or right this is because of the flaps are tilted which gives it a new trajectory this is what supplied to rockets is the tilted wheel effect which allows it to travel through gravitational tunnels in other words the planet's gravitational fields are traveling in a tilt the wheel effect so if the rockets after space at the same effect as if you're going around the planet itself it has an effect but without the gravity out there it creates its own gravitational tunnels once it gets near other planet orbits it picks up that gravitational pull through the tilted wheel effect which has an effect of propelling it through the universe from one planet to another or object to object through gravitational tunnels this is a breakthrough in space physics
