I like the idea of points rounds being random because it adds an element of uncertainty. However the exact laps shouldn't be chosen by the organisers but determined before the race (and kept secret) according to some kind of distribution formula.

I don’t disagree - as Will mentioned, this is sort of a “prime-style” way of deciding key laps, but it works better for primes in a one-off crit because they’re less important to an overall finish. Like Jeff said, that should be saved for less consequential primes.
