For sanctioned events, search www.usacycling.org. Depending on where you are, you may have a Local Association (e.g., www.coloradocycling.org) with additional info on grassroots events. BikeReg.com is another good place to look. I bet if you post your location here, someone in the 150k subscriber base is in your area and can give you good info.

Why does USA Cycling always seem to race on the absolute worst street conditions with janky pavement?!? Knowing in advance that the race is going to be there, why don't they work with the municipalities to repave or, at a minimum, fix the crater potholes!? This is such an obvious hazard that would be worth the value to fix. And "yes" I know what department paperwork goes into it (had the convo with a NC Dept Highways engineer). This is not that hard!

I remember the National crit in Downers Grove, IL. The course was packed with spectators. What is going on with US cycling to lose so much interest???

Roanoke, VA, is in the middle of nowhere, plain and simple. I honestly was shocked that it was being held there. Downers is the Chicagoland metro area. The nearest metro area to Roanoke is either Richmond or Charlotte NC, both 3 hours away per google maps. The race might as well have been held in Alma, Nebraska.

@@sknkwrksowner That is a good point. It just so happens that I now live in North Carolina, and the National crit was again held 20 minutes from where I live, in High Point NC. Same thing there, low turnout. What was even worse, the field was only about 50 riders and the course was so short, a small break lapped the field. It felt like a local cat 1 crit.

I have not attended for the last 30 years or so (or ridden it for more than 45 years), but even back in ancient times (the early 70s when I did ride/attend) the oldest continuously run crit (or any race for that matter) in this land, the Tour Of Sommerville (N.J.) always had spectators 3 deep around the whole course (5 deep at the start/finish line). Of course, it was the biggest thing of the year in that town, and is in a densely populated, suburban N.Y.C. area.

I have a question for Jeff: You race crits regularly, and we only see a few crashes. Of course, the more often you practice the better, and you guys have lots of experience, but would the danger for a crash be higher, if you guys, with your experience, were racing fixed gear single speed crits?

Go back far enough in U.S. racing (at least 50 years before the first Red Hook Crit), and ALL racing was done on fixed gear bikes, as the Amateur Bicycle League of America (the forerunner to the USCF and USAC) did not allow freewheels or derailleurs at all (even for actual, hilly road races, few as there were of those!) until much later than they were the commonplace, accepted standard in Europe. Very few recent newcomers to this sport realize this fact. Obviously, the speeds back then were WAY WAY under any Red Hook style fixed gear crit is nowadays, let alone any multi-geared road bike crit.

They were well over 2 hours for a 50 mile race way back then, as compared to the ~1 hour high 30 minutes, to high 40 minute range nowadays, on fully geared road bikes. The winning time at Red Hook has to be quicker than 25 MPH (or even less), correct??

@@nofascistsonmywatch Yeah, I'm remembering with a 80 year old brain, not data. American football, big guys. It's all still racing bikes and I love it! I remember the races having lots of surges and tactics with blocking and sprinting. Primes with cans of ham as prizes etc. The 'good ol' days don't compare to flat out most of the race and modern bikes and tires that can really corner. Those old silk sew-ups had a lot of punctures. I have no knowledge of crit racing other than the many many many videos I've watched, mostly your channel, and all I was thinking is "why is a guy who's a sprinter on the front with 940m to go?" I think the other teams outsmarted him and let him lead them out. Why waste one of your own leadout guys when someone else is willing to do the work? Then, at 200m, you open your sprint and blow past everyone. Am I wrong?

Actually, it wasn't even close. Very bad mistake to make when the pace was so high with 1/2 lap to go. Second, never assume someone or some team will do something during a race. Every race is different and every rider feels different during the race.
