In this video, I compare the Nord Electro 6 keyboard versus the Nord Stage 3 keyboard/synthesizer. If you are trying to decide between which of these two Nord Keyboards to buy, this Nord review and Nord comparison video is for you!
The Nord Stage 3 and the Electro 6 are close cousins from the same Nord family with many similarities and some of the same great Nord features and capabilities. Yet, there are a few key differences that can affect your purchase decision and may make it difficult to choose which one you obtain.
If you want to see more details about most of the features discussed in this video first-hand, please watch the video series where I compare the Nord State 3 with the Nord Electro 5.
I also touch upon several other Nord features many of which I already have a dedicated video for on the channel where I explain what a given feature is, provide some background and history, and then finally show you in great detail how to use a given feature.
I'm sure that I missed something along the way but I did my best to include all the biggest items (or at least the ones that were a factor in my decision/research early on. Thanks for watching!

Great Vid Marc, question please, I see that the Electro 6 has two different Panning effects 1 & 2 where as the Stage3 has just one Auto Pan, does one sound better/richer/wider than the other or is it just the way the two boards are laid out ?, Also does for example, the Deep function make the Chorus on the Electro richer/wider than on the Stage 3 which doesn't have it, or the same deal, just the way the boards are set out ?. As you know I'm all about the Stereo Panning and Stereo Chorus Fender Rhodes sound, that's really my main focus for considering buying a NORD, I just played one the other day after ( and I've demo'd them all, Kronos/SV2 Roland, never tried Keyscape but how much better can you get ?, hey just buy a real Vintage Vibe or refurbished Rhodes if that's your jam $$$$$$$$$$ ) and it blew my mind !, it won't be long before I join The Nord army, that's for sure.

@@MyKeysToMusic WOW ! I'm beyond grateful Marc, thank you, thank you, thank you, I've just seen the vid, its world class, one more question please, can you set the aftertouch to control the rate/depth of the Auto Pan or the chorus as examples ?, also can you do the same thing with a control pedal ? same with mod wheel and pitch stick ?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@staceycarras3815 Glad you liked my supplemental video! For the Stage 3, the Rate and the Amount for Effect 1 can be controlled by the pedal, aftertouch, and mod wheel. The amount of effect 2 can be controlled in the same way with the same controls. However, the rate for Effect 2 CANNOT be controlled by the morph controls - it's variable based on the knob settings on the front panel only. Not exactly sure why it was designed in this way but perhaps it makes some sense based on the types of things in Effects 2. Hope that answers the question. Grab an image of what's in Effect 1 and Effect 2 on the Stage 3 and correlate that with my message here to know which effects are in 1 versus 2 of course...

@@MyKeysToMusic I went into the local NORD dealer today and had a go at both a NS3 and Electro 6 and your spot on Marc, on a side note I also demo'd both the Yamaha CP88 ( the so called NORD killer/YamaNord/Black Nord "great comedy with those KZbin names Ha ha ha ha, lots of comedians on KZbin" ), the KORG SV-2, Roland FA-08, KORG Kronos, and the surprise Dexibell S9 ( its got great Rhodes sample and Auto Pan ). The CP88 had a delicious key-bed but overrated Rhodes sample and the Auto Pan can't be used independently of the Compressor, FAIL . The FA-08 Nice Rhodes sounds but Roland have never really gotten the Auto Pan right/and Menu hell combined with a heavy key-bed, FAIL . The Dexibell S9, Killer Rhodes sounds, deep and great Auto Pan, great key-bed, but still some Menu hell, not bad. The SV-2 really surprised me, the RH-3 key-bed was second only to the CP88, great Rhodes sounds, Great Auto Pan, inbuilt speaker, lovely interface, a real winner ! The Kronos had a heavier key-bed than the SV-2 even though its labeled as RH-3, curious thing that ?, also a very different beast, being a work station, far too clever for a home player. Nord is the clear winner , although it doesn't have the best key-bed ( not the worst either ) Nord are very clever with what they've done with their key-bed, how well they've interfaced it with the samples, once you start playing, the keys enchant the player like a snake charmer, and like a great video game controller that's been perfectly calibrated to follow what's going on in the game. Again, thank you so much for all the hard work you do for The Nord army Marc.

Well done for doing your research! The Nord Electro 6 is a great keyboard and I have used it on every gig since I've had it but if you can afford a Stage 3, go tor the Stage 3. It has a ton of options and the full-featured synth can't be underestimated. Be sure to watch the Discovery series: kzbin.info/aero/PLvND2qkkWygqahJWvI75kYCQo6nPMJA7i Thanks for your comment today. Thank you Tommy! Good luck with your decision. If it’s in the budget, go with a Stage 3 if you think you have even a hint of interest to work with the synth…. I have worked with a great many folks who either added a Stage 3 or traded for a Stage 3. Do consider the Electro if you a primarily interested in piano and organ. If however, you are playing covers or want to imitate famous music like so many of my videos demonstrate, you run out of runway with the Electro pretty quickly and may want to lean towards a Stage 3. Also based on history, I would think we are nearing a time for either a Stage 3 EX or Stage 4 release although I have no evidence of this. Just based on timing is the only thing I have to go on. The Stage 3 came out in 2017. Cheers!

This is super helpful, thanks for taking the time to go into the nitty gritty yet making it clear. Another factor I've also been weighing up is the action - it took a visit to a couple of music stores to physically try them all to realise I don't want semi-weighted and prefer either hammer action or weighted keys. Your video has really helped too.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Жыл бұрын
Hello @sallystockwell thanks for the update here. You were smart (and a bit lucky) to be able to test these in the actual music stores. For months, this has not been an easy thing to do (test Nord keyboards in person). If you are leaning towards the Electro, consider the Piano 5 instead, as it has better action, and essentially the only thing you sacrifice is the Organ engine from the Electro. However, the Stage 3 prices recently went down, so if you're looking for more functionality, go for the Stage. I'd recommend the 88 over the 76 if you can fit it in your studio. If you're looking instead to play out with it, then the 88 is going to be big and heavy. So in that case, I'd probably lean back towards the Piano 5 73 key instead which will give you both the feel and the lighter weight without sacrificing too much.

Excellent and thanks for leaving a comment! Glad to hear the video helped with your decision. Yes, it's all about what works for you. Of all the people that I work with and who also purchase and Electro 6 about 10% have upgraded to a Stage 3 shortly thereafter and I thought it would be good to mention why: 1) They need the ability to play two sounds from the synth/sample engine at once. (Like a sampled bass guitar while also playing a string sound at the same time). With the Electro 6, you're going to have to choose one or the other - not both. 2) They didn't need a synth at first, but then they see what the Stage 3 synth can do and then they want to upgrade. 3) They like the Extern option provided the Stage 3 allowing them to easily connect and push control out to external keyboards and/or the computer/iPad. (The Extern option allows for some basic keyboard "controller" like features providing some flexibility with how the keyboard is split when driving external sounds). For all the other customers, they love their Electro through and through. Some customers have both the Electro and the Stage because they want "more, more, and more!" Be sure to visit my website when/if you're looking for pro training on your Electro 6! Feel free to ask more questions as they come up here too.

Hi Marc, Your website is very informative regarding Nord instruments and I’ve learned a lot from it. I purchased an Electro 6D last year and the learning curve was, and is, very intimidating. I’ve decided to upgrade to a Stage 3 and plan on enrolling in at least one of your courses to help shorten the learning curve and reach a point where I’m comfortable with it. Is it possible to back up and transfer the settings from the Electro to the Stage 3. I’d be using the Nord Program Manager but don’t know about the compatibility between these two instruments. Thanks in advance. Max

@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary! Great - so happy the video helped! As far as updating goes, you could potentially read through the comments here as there are a few things mentioned by folks on features that I may not have covered in the comparison video above. Having owned both a Stage 3 and Electro 6 for a while now, I can recommend the Stage 3 if your budget permits it. And as you look through my library of now over 80 videos on this channel, you'll see more capability and song recreation power using the Stage 3 as the synth cannot be underestimated for that purpose along with the ability to play from both panel A and B providing you essentially two synth engines at once which you will find becomes really important as you get into it. You could also consider the purchase of a used Stage 3 compact which should shave some off the price (www.reverb.com is one recommendation). Finally, I have a pro training course available for both keyboards found at www.MyKeysToMusic.com when you're ready for it. Thanks for your comment and for watching! I have an Electro 6D 73, and I can confirm that it DOES respond to external pitch-bend commands via MIDI, but only on the lower part of a MIDI split. My guitarist son uses a Sonuus G2M pitch-to-MIDI converter to play Nord sax and cello samples from his guitar, and the Electro responds accurately to string bends.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon. After a bit of research and some hands-on testing myself, you are 100% correct on this! When the Electro 6 was first released, this option wasn't available and it wasn't mentioned in the manual anywhere (it may still not be mentioned in the manual). Then two months later after release, they fixed the pitch stick issue with patch 1.12. This question has inspired me to make another video to clarify this because I'm sure there are a lot of people that want to know this important fact. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I'm also going to edit this video above to cut out the part about it not working with external keyboards etc. Wow - thanks so much for calling this out.

Thanks for the detailed comparison! I do a lot of organ work, so the Electro 6D 73 may be what I want to stick with. However, some of the features that you have shown on the Stage 3 may make it the better option. I work with a cover band, and I need to be able to have a lot of different sounds at my disposal. Having the output options that you do on the stage 3 may make that the better option. I was considering using the 6D 73 and a nord lead A1 on my two tier stand, but I may reconsider after seeing this video. Tough choice!

@@MyKeysToMusic That is a very nice thread! Thank you! I think that the Nord Sample Library will cover a lot of what you need for a cover band. I like the features better on the 6D for the organ splits, which is huge for me because I use a lot of Organ for what I do. However, the exten section on the Stage is what makes me curious. It looks like it makes it more convenient for you to control another keyboard with the Stage, which would allow for more sound samples. However, the Nord has a bit more storage space for more samples. So, I'm still a bit torn! Ahhh!

Great video and analysis!! Really helpful -- thanks a lot. I have a question. I can see a link to the music stand on your description of the video, but could you please confirm whether it's compatible with the Stage 3 Compact? I've checked the official Nord website and have the impression that it isn't. After watching your video, I was inclined to get the Stage 3 over the Electro 6D (my initial choice), but for the Stage 3 Compact not to be compatible with the music stand would be a small but significant drawback for me (I missed it so badly on my Electro 5D). Great video again, Mark, thanks for it!
@MyKeysToMusic

Hi everygrain3008. Thanks for your question and compliments. It appears that you are 100% correct. The Nord Stage 3 Compact does NOT have accommodations for the Nord music stand. Check out this picture here: www.nordkeyboards.com/sites/default/files/files/products/nord-stage-3/images/NS3-Compact-Top.jpg (you will see that there are no stand holders on the back of the keyboard like there is with the other two Stage models). That's really a shame, but that's the way it goes. I did notice that Nord provides that option for all versions of the Electro 6 - even the 61 key. Wonder if that's something you could "add on" by yourself somehow? For this one, you may have to resort to using a traditional stand for it.

Hello. I love questions like this. So for most of my videos I tend to record in real time so that the pictures you are seeing are being presented as I'm speaking. When I describe a website for example, I'm recording the screen at the same time. Now, when I do all my comparison videos, I create a "keynote" file on my computer. Then I record both my head, the keynote slides and my voice all at the same time and I just run through the whole presentation all at once. I do then later edit it to remove any awkward pauses or misfires on what I'm saying. I then insert other "B roll" video when you see me break to the actual keyboard for a demo. So, it'a s combination of techniques used but the bulk of what I do is recorded in real time (head, screen, voice). If you want to see an actual live presentation from start to finish where I go from presenting screen and keyboards back and forth, you can check out any of my live videos such as this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGfJfHSXhq-El5o

One feature that I really love on the Stage is the morphing feature with the wheel. I use this daily. And it has also aftertouch which is also useful to enhance the sound. Great asset to the keyboard community, especially in the Nord world... a quick question: is there any discussion needed to compare keybeds between the Electro 6D SW73 and the Stage Compact SW73? I would assume they are identical, but I'm getting ready to spend real money so I thought I'd ask. Thanks again for the great advice!!
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 5 жыл бұрын
HI Michael. Thanks for your kind words here. To the best of my knowledge (and I don't have first-hand knowledge of this by the way), it would be my assumption that the Stage 3 Compact 73 waterfall is the same keybed as the 6D 73 waterfall. Also, know that each keybed is further "tweaked" before it leaves the factory so even with that, no two keybeds are actually identical. But I also assume the calibration is so defined and so precise that you probably couldn't tell the difference between any two like Nord keyboards (which is why the calibration is done at the factory in the first place). You can watch this part of the Nord video for a very brief view of the calibration process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5PPiqOgfNJkm9E If you don't already have a purchase source for this, I recommend giving Sweetwater a call and asking for Jonathan Casarow 800 222 4700 x1759 Direct, call or text: 260 247 6496 (I get absolutely no commissions from this - I just try to help an honest sales expert when I can from a world-class retailer like Sweetwater.) Good luck and Happy New Year!

Thank you for the great video and clear presentation. I am a Nord newbie (looking) and have become so confused! I was leaning toward the 6D. My question about both: How many custom settings can you store. It only shows 5> or is this 5 banks> THX SO MUCH
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Жыл бұрын
Hello @Jim Herrmann and welcome to the channel! There are 416 available locations to store programs on the Nord Electro 6 (400 for the Nord Stage 3 and 512 for the Nord Stage 4). Of those 412, approx 300 are full from the factory. However, any of these can be edited or removed too. So, you get a LOT of space to store your individual programs. By the way, a "program" is the same as a "patch" if you are using that terminology coming from other boards. *The Electro 6 is organized like so:* There are 26 banks (one for each letter of the alphabet). There are 16 programs per letter 26 banks X 16 per letter = 416 program locations. The number system works like this: A:11, A:22, A:23, A:24 A:21, A:22, A:23, A:24 A:31, A:32, A:33, A:34 A:41, A:42, A:43, A:44 B:11, B:22, B:23, B:24 B:21, B:22, B:23, B:24 B:31, B:32, B:33, B:34 B:41, B:42, B:43, B:44 (This continues on like this C through Z) Each letter group can be "paged up" using the Page button, where you'll jump from A to B to C and so on. On top of that, there are 8 "Live" locations for your most favorite of favorites. Live mode provides functionality where you can make a tweak on the fly, and you don't have to push Store, but it will save whatever you adjust. That's both a blessing and a curse, so it's something you have to get used to. Some people use the heck out of "Live Mode," while others never touched it in their life. If you are new to the Nord world, you may want to strongly consider what your needs are because the Stage 3 and Stage 4 keyboards offer quite an additional amount of functionality (at quite an additional amount of investment). This is especially true if you are looking to imitate semi-complex synth sounds. Unless you already have another keyboard fulfilling this role or you know right now that synth sounds are not that important to you, I would consider a Stage 3 or 4 if you can swing the budget. There's never been a better time than now to purchase a Stage 3 for exmaple, as the Stage 4 just came out, causing a Stage 3 drive drop. But even with that, it's still a notable investment. If money was no object, the Stage 4 will elevate you on all levels. Good luck! - Marc

In my case I play in a classic rock band and use piano most of the time followed by organ and a few songs with synth. I'm also not as technically knowledgeable as I would like to be and have owned keyboards in the past that were a bit intimidating in that regard. I'm sure that the learning curve for this board will be challenging, but the quality of the piano, organ and synth sounds should be worth it.

Hi, thanks for the really detailed video, I'm having to choose between a NS3 compact and a NE6D too and I have a few questions: - I know that both have MIDI in so I could connect an external keyboard controller and play one sound on the controller and another on the nord, but what about TWO external controllers? Provided that I have one of those midi boxes could I use for example an 88 weighted controller and a 61 or 49 synth type controller and play piano, synth/samples and organ on the nord at the same time? - When in organ mode, since most of the organs were originally 61 keys manuals, what happens on the extra keys (73 keys models)? do they extend the sound simulation beyond the range of the originals? do they fill the bottom end with simulated bass keys? - Also, how long do you think the stage 3 is going to stay on the market? I wouldn't want to buy it if they're going to release a stage 4 next year haha.

Hi Geancarlos! Thanks for your questions. I'm reflecting on this and hope to have a comprehensive response within a week or so. Thanks!
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Geancarlos. Here are answers to your questions as I know them so far: 1) Using a proper MIDI device/setup, it should be very possible to have multiple controllers driving the sounds of either panel. (One for Panel A and one for Panel B) allowing for two simultaneous and independent sound sources. Each panel has its own ability to receive MIDI on a separate channel. I'll attempt to confirm this as soon as time allows. 2) The Organ engine for all organs except for the Farfisa appear to represent the entire range of the available keyboard. In other words, there is no simulation or duplication as far as I can tell with the testing I've done. However, for the organ set to Farfisa, the lower and upper registers are "duplicated" as if they put the 61 keys in the center of the Nord keyboard. As you move very low or very high in the range, you'll hear the notes repeated to make up the difference. So, the notes are not simulated, but they are duplicated (at least for the Farfisa) 3) I have no insight into what Clavia and will do. One can assume they will eventually create a Nord Stage 4 or maybe a Nord Stage 3 EX or something like that. But I haven no formal relationship with Clavia at this time to know that information. And if I did have a relationship, it's likely I couldn't share future info like this. What I can tell you is that these keyboards last through the ages. There are countless people still using a Stage 2 for example and they appear to hold value in the used market fairly well. You may find out more by calling around to the people who regularly sell new Nords (music retailers/distributors). But even then, I think they don't know the information. I know that every time I ask this same question from my associates at retail stores, they never know what's coming next or when. If you find out, let us know! Thanks for your great questions and for watching!

The Electro 5D let you use pitch bend +/- 2 semitones from an external MIDI keyboard (on the Sample Section). Did they remove that feature on the 6D?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hi swancakes This is a great question actually. In the Nord Electro 5 manual, pitch bend information is located on page 15. Yet, the Nord Electro 6 manual doesn't have a single mention of pitch bend at all. That led me to believe that because they had changed the configuration of MIDI a bit with upper and lower, that perhaps they removed that option. After all, they also removed the "setlist/song mode" option so it's a possibility. However, when reading down the list of fixes to the Nord Electro 6 OS, there is mention of "pitch bend". So, it seems to me that perhaps there is in fact pitch bend compatibility with the Electro 6. If anyone is reading this and can do a test, please let us know. I don't have my hands on an actual Nord Electro 6 to test it directly. Great question, thanks for watching!

Hi. Great video. Please clarify if I'm able to send b3 bass to bass pedal keys through midi and still have dual organ on keyboard? Thanking you in anticipation
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you S C! Well, I don't know the definitive answer to this question only because I haven't tested this exact combination. However, my short answer is that this should be very possible with the right setup. The pedal keys transmit MIDI out to MIDI in on the Nord keyboard using the traditional 5 PIN DIN MIDI cable. Plugging in the pedal keys occupies the MIDI in port on the Nord competing with the need for the same thing using the Dual keyboard feature of the Nord Stage 3. But I suspect this will work fine if you get a MIDI splitter or use a MIDI-compatible interface. In other words, you need a way to plug-in two MIDI controllers into the Nord keyboard at the same time (one controller for your pedal keys and one to control your Dual Keyboard feature). I have a video on how to do this actually. Have a look because I think the same theory demonstrated in that video can be applied to your question here. Report back with your thoughts if you can. Here is the video if you haven't already seen it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn-YfJ-GhL2Nb7M Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the great comparison. What I'd like to ask is a how good the Nord Stage synth is? I mean for the price difference between Stage and Electro I can buy for example a Novation Peak or Prophet rev2-8 desktop. Of course such bundle will be a bit heavier, but for a studio use cases it might make sense.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@ koban4egg Great question and one that has a lot of subjective overtones... and it's a bit of an apples and oranges comparison here. The Novation (at first blush) has some really strong features. 3 Oscillators with 2 LFOs and a 4 pole ADSR. Lots of flexibility with how you connect it. It's sort of a swiss army knife and something you can use in a lot of different scenarios. It has only 8 voices however, (which may be more than enough for most things) but still way less than the Stage 3 which has 34 voices across two panels. That does and will make an impact on things. The Novation is also lacking a keyboard! This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. With the Stage 3 having the "on board" synth right there with a single knob to mix it in can be powerful and convenient and all in one package driven from the same keyboard. Now if the Novation was $800 instead of $1400, I might be leaning big towards the Novation. But at $1400 the decision becomes a bit trickier and harder to make. What I love about the Novation is the fact that you can pick it up, plug in a simple mini keyboard controller and be relaxing in your favorite easy chair while making your next favorite sound. The Stage 3 is more of a studio or gigging piece of gear of pro gear. So, what I'm talking about here is form factor. There is something special about having an ultra-portable synth module option where you can grab and go. I think with any decision like this you have to figure out where the dealbreakers are and work your way down the list similar to how I do the comparison videos. For example, when you are playing your Electro, are you going to be inconvenienced by having to plug in another synth, get it connected to the PA and then MIDI it up so that you can hear it? During a gig for example, having one extra keyboard is 2X the complexity and time to monkey with it all - especially considering this is a module without a keyboard so that's one more thing to connect and configure (MIDI channels, etc.) Regarding a synth like the Sequential Prophet Rev 2-08, you're still talking about a subjective aspect to a decision like this and some more apples and oranges I'm afraid. For this, you are getting a very strong (and likely very nice sounding) synth for about the same price as the Novation. David Smith instruments are world-class machines with a ton of bells and whistles. The Sequential has a built-in sequencer which no Nord keyboard has. This alone is a compelling feature and one that could drive some interesting options for you. Now that I've reflected on all this, I'm compelled to identify potential one big-ticket items to help you with your decision: 1) If you are a synth enthusiast or plan to be, consider getting a third-party external synth. I think you'll get more enjoyment out of having a dedicated board purpose build with the sole purpose of being the best synth it can be. Also, if you plan on really having fun "designing sounds" and just having fun with music (versus a semi-pro player in a cover band for example), again, get the third-party synth. 2) The Stage 3 is a great all-around board that can dress for just about any occasion. In a second, you can have piano, organ or synth or all three. It's got lots of arms and legs and there is hardly a song you can't cover just using the single board. But it was designed primarily to be a performance board, one focused on getting the job done in the studio or at a gig and not necessarily designed for the synth enthusiast or sound designer. For that, consider the Wave 2. But even with the Nord Wave 2 , that too is really a performance keyboard (in fact they put "performance keyboard" right on the labeling). So for me, the decision would come down to this. If I plan on playing in a band or I'm a busy pit musician for musicals or a studio player called in to do session after session, I'd get a Stage 3 no questions asked. I wouldn't fool around with another synth to save my life. The setup alone kills the mojo on that. If however, I wanted to spend part of my time with sound design, understand synthesis, and provide me the flexibility to turn on a great sounding synth and just have fun, as in composing via a comupter, I'd strongly consider the Electro/3rd party synth route. If you are leaning towards a third-party synth and you're wondering between the Novation and the Prophet. I'd ask yourself in what scenario you are going to find yourself in. As a gigging/traveling musician, you'll likely want the "real board" so go Prophet. If you plan on doing more stuff at home consider either. I really like the Novation and the features it has. The problem is there are way too many good choices out there making it nearly impossible to decide on where to put your hard-earned $1500! And technically speaking, each of these boards you mentioned needs about 8 pages of comparison details to really get to the bottom of it all. To do that, I'd probably need to own each and be really familiar with all they can do. In this comment, I just flew over things quick-like and I know that I didn't mention many other angles to this equation. Best of luck with your research on this! 🏄

@jaydezproductions2081 Jaydez - sorry for the dela on this. Technically, you can't layer two pianos on the Electro 6 with the piano engine. However, you can layer a sampled piano played through the synth engine on top of a piano coming from the piano engine. So, in that way, yes, you can layer two pianos.

@Max Terrazos Sorry for the delay on this response here. So yes, this is possible. Let me take each one at a time: 1)So the output settings are hard-coded to either Stereo (all engines coming from L and R) or Organ in one channel and Piano and Synth in the other. So, not exactly what you are looking for there. 2) You can disable/enable the volume (known as the control pedal) on any sound engine independent from one another - no problem with that. 3) You can disable/enable the sustain pedal on any sound engine independent from one another - no problem with that either. A quick question if I may - would it be possible (for bigger gigs) to use an external 2nd keyboard to play the Nords piano section only, and have the Nord keys for organ & synth? Then I could go waterfall and use my old Korg TR88 for the weighted piano stuff at the same time?

Hello @garyking4032 Yes, this is very possible with both the Electro and the Stage. On the Electro you'd use the "External Keyboard to Low" option. On the Nord Stage 3, you would use the option called "Dual Keyboard" - I have a video on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y17QnWaOZrGgY5o I also have pro courses available on my website when/if you pull the trigger on either one of these keyboards where I have lessons for all this stuff already ready to go.

Are effects like reverb able to be routed to outputs 3/4 and 1/2 simultaneously on Stage 3? I can’t do this on my stage 2
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hi jazzpiper78: All effects except reverb and compressor are routable to outputs 3 and 4 (which is good). But not having reverb routed to 3 and 4 may be a letdown. That's because Reverb/compressor is assigned by the entire panel (A and B) versus a specific sound engine (Organ, Piano, Synth) like the rest of the effects.

Hi Tom. You can't directly load samples from other keyboards but you can use WAV files and construct them in the Nord Sample Editor to get them assigned to keys which can then be saved and inserted into your Nord. It's on my long list to show folks how to do all this. In the meantime, here's a video to get you started: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGLTiqeujNNjlaM

@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Жыл бұрын
Hello @Grantti. YES! you can use the Extern option from your Nord Stage 3 and have that directly control MainStage to layer all the sounds at once. You'll just want to make sure you have an audio interface to be the central place where all the sound gets wired to. This will help you avoid lag. On a related note, I demonstrate some basic setups here on KZbin for your Stage 3. This first one is for NS3 to GarageBand for recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4aZm2ilaL6Zl6M Then, when you're ready to record with MIDI and then have it trigger your Nord Stage 3 sounds, you can graduate to this setup here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJCpeIRuaN17ZrM I don't have a video directly explaining what you are actually looking for specifically, but it's on the list and has been for some time. Luckily, what you want to do with MainStage is very straightforward and one of the easier setups. Just think of your Nord keyboard as a kind of controller and it will all make sense on the setup. It's pretty much identical to how you would set up any external keyboard controller into the computer. The only difference here is that with the Stage 3, you have a dedicated section of the panel for it (Extern), and it comes with its own dedicated set of MIDI channels with options for Panel A and B independently. You can also drive split points and a few other nifty features. Here is a video on how Extern really works in much more detail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6rJiKGnotimnq8. In my online paid course, I demonstrate how to use Extern to drive and calibrate program changes into external keyboards or the computer.

@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Жыл бұрын
Hello @HAMZA it's not possible to directly transfer programs from the Electro 5 to the Stage 3. All sounds on the Nord Stage 3 have to be recreated from scratch by hand. However, you are able to use any custom samples that might exist on the Electro 5 and use them in the Stage 3. The programs however are not directly convertible. You'll have to create the sounds over again on the Stage 3. Although I wish there was a solution for this, the skills you'll learn by recreating them yourself will come in handy for any new sounds you want to program down the road on the Stage 3. You may want to consider taking a look at my website for courses or my Patreon site for lots of lessons and sound setups for the Stage 3. I'm adding to the libraries all the time.

Hello @Tango Malucco sorry for delay on this response here. If you haven' already made your decision, I would lean towards the Piano 5 in your case - especially since you mentioned that "feel" is important to you. You'll get the Triple Sensor keybed with grand weighted action even with the 73 key Nord Piano 5 which is going to be better than the HP73 from the Electro. The Piano 5 also has two layers (that's more than the Electro with one layer). The only big thing you're missing on the Piano that you get on the Electro is the organ engine. If you can live without that, I'd go Piano 5 all the way...

Come to think of it, due to this, I decided to buy the Stage! Thanks again for all your time in making those vids! A short and friendly request: I read a lot about all OS updates. Many users are still on 1.40 due to bugs. Have you experienced any? I am on the newest update (1.52) and experienced a bug in the synth section and now thinking about getting back to 1.50, for example. It's too bad Nord can't seem to get a grip on their software right now. But then again, for me it's not the end of the world. Any thoughts? Thanks again! Timo

Hi Timo! *So glad these videos helped you with your purchase and your discovery of the Nord Stage 3!* Now on to your question. I have heard that bugs do get introduced when the new OS arrives from time to time. Like you mentioned, sometimes these bugs are minor and don't affect most people. I think I have discovered a bug on the latest OS whereby if you put the delay on and set the dry/web setting all the way to 10, you don't hear the notes as you play them. You only hear the delay portion of the note. Moving the setting back down to something lower seems to fix the issue. I don't' recall this being an issue with earlier OS versions. I could be wrong about this but I think it's a bug. This is with version 1.52. People sometimes ask if we should be updating to the latest OS. In general, I think it's a good idea because they (Clavia) probably fix more things than they break with every release. But, like most things in the software world (I own a software company), it's very difficult to do regression testing. And because of that, new fixes sometimes introduce new bugs unintentionally. It would be nice if Nord provided earlier versions of the OS so we could go back and test. Perhaps it's a good idea to archive the OS versions on our own as they come out. *Good question and thanks for watching!*

I would say the differences between the Stage 3 and Electro 6 are quite significant. 1: 4 individual outputs on the Stage 3. Only 2 outputs on the Electro. “Not a deal breaker for most”. I say it’s a very important feature. Say you’re running a patch of a piano and a synth, and you want to use external effects on the synth only.. You can only do that on the Stage 3. Well actually on the Electro, you can use it in mono mode and send one mono sound through output L and another mono through output R. Very unsatisfying. And it’s a master setting on the Electro, which means you have to go to the mastersetting and set the Electro up to run in mono. And you have to go to the master settings again, when you want to put it back in stereo mode, which means you’re not gonna do that during a concert. On Stage 3 each program can save it’s own output settings. It’s just next next level in convenience. 2: Programchange by foot pedal is a very very very important feature that you don’t really talk about. But it’s something you have to have, when you have seamless sound transitions, as it allows you to change programs in a much more musical way, as you don’t have to move your hands from the keyboard the change programs. Defenitely one of the features that makes me choose Stage 3 over Electro 6. 3: 2 gigs of pianos in Stage 3 against 1 gig in Electro 6 isn’t that important? I think it’s very important. One of the features, that makes the pianos in the Nord’s shine is long release and string resonance. You need the at least “large” samples to get string resonance over the entire keyboard. And the XL samples have more layers. Having double up on piano memory in the Stage 3 is a very important difference, as you won’t have to compromise as much choosing pianos. 4: Rate knobs in the effects. How can you say those aren’t important. It makes a huge difference to control over the effects. 5: Independent rotary speaker on the Stage 3 is not just a slight advantage. It’s a huge advantage, as gives you an extra distortion circuit for those Jon Lord organ sounds. Stage 3 gives you the overdrive from the individual rotary speaker plus the tube distortion circuit in the effects. Very important to me. 6: On Stage 3 you can morph a loooot of parameter by morphwheel or pedal, including the effects. That also takes the Stage 3 to the next next next level. My conclusion. Electro 6 is awesome. I’ve used Electro 5 for a couple of years and it’s awesome. And seamless sound transitions in Electro 6 is an awesome new feature in the Electro, but as long as it doesn’t have program change by pedal, the feature is not complete. It’s only half the pleasure. There a World of difference between the two models. That’s said, I enjoy your videos :)

I believe these clarifications are really going to help people understand these features and their resulting differences of the Electro / Nord Stage 3 a lot more. Therefore I'm going to pin this to the top for a while if not indefinitely. So thank you for that! And my personality is such that I have a tendency to make assumptions on what "most people" would like through my perspective. I probably should think about that more in future videos and use phrasing like, "It wasn't a big deal to me" rather than saying, "it may not be a big deal for most." So thank you for calling this out!! As I was making the video, I realized it could have easily been twice as long - probably even longer in fact, to go a bit deeper on some of the features mentioned and to include some features/details that were not talked about at all - like the ones you mentioned. I also failed to mention or discuss "aftertouch" or the omission of setlist/song mode in the Electro 6 for example. Hopefully, I hit most of the main points but I'm am grateful again for your clarifications and explanations. Furthermore, I'm quite pleased that in the end, the videos are still enjoyable. That's what great about KZbin. You have the videos to make statements, share opinions, and provide first-hand information. But then you also have the comments capability where you can further clarify things for the audience and where the audience can provide direct feedback from their professional understanding and expertise. I would disagree that seamless transitions via a program change are only of use with a foot pedal. I have a 5D and find this a big drawback - generally the split-second hand movement to hit the program change button isn't a dealbreaker and anyway ameliorated by the seamless transition.

These days I supply a left and right channel and go directly to our PA which is Bose and that sounds fairly good. That works better if you have at least one of the speakers behind so that you can hear it. I would be curious to get some more info here if anyone else wants to chime in.

However when watching a video from 10 years ago I notice they used some patches not listed in the Nord sound manager. Am I right that you can load any stage 3 sound into the electro 6? And would there be a go to sound for playing string lines and brass lines? I’ve kind of got used to using soul horns because of their detuned nature and somewhat realistic sound. On the video they use Spiv brass and Marcato strings which I can’t see on the manger list. Here’s the link :

@@MyKeysToMusic in the forum if you search Brass there is a guy on there who’s posted patches for superstition. Of those patches there’s a really useful FP patch which swells great and sounds much better than the Nord stock sounds. There’s also a fall, doit and shake patch so I’ll probably program those into the 4 buttons like you demonstrate on making set lists and then when playing brass lines flick between the sounds as I play. For me the best stock brass on the Nord is soul horns and brass pop 2 (I think). I guess the organ and pianos are so good that comparatively the brass is disappointing. Btw I’ve figured out that if I sample or find a sample of layered sounds I can get more than one synth patch playing at once - like brass split with strings. Hello @DellaFe Oficial Did you already review this post about this on the Nord User forum? www.norduserforum.com/nord-stage-forum-f3/nord-stage-2-vs-stage-3-is-the-3-worth-it-t14701.html?sid=4864a20bd058d370dad5833245fdcabb The main difference is that the Stage 3 has a stronger synth engine with more flexibility. However the Stage 2 can do a lot so if you have your hands on one for a good price, that is a consideration for sure. Also, be sure to check out the comparison chart directly on the Nord Website found here: www.nordkeyboards.com/products/nord-stage-3/comparison-chart An idea that now seems interesting to me came from your request. I think it would be helpful to people if I were to walk through the comparison charts on the Nord Website so that I could explain what the feature is and how important (or not important) a given feature is to me and why. I think this insight would be beneficial for the Nord newcomer. The video would be more like a "consultative video" much like what you'd expect to get if you walked into a music retail store and started asking a bunch of questions. I'm going to file this in my list of possible future videos. Thanks! - Marc

Hello Marc can you a video about Nord Piano 5. I'm thinking about upgrading from Nord electro 5 or what do you think?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic Жыл бұрын
Hello @JAYDEZ Productions great question here. I think that would be a step in the right direction IF you can live without the dedicated Organ engine. Keep in mind that this is almost an unfair fight, as the Nord Piano 5 is the latest Nord offering. The Nord Electro 5, on the other hand, has been in the field for years now. So, the newer tech in the Piano 5 really shows itself on the list below. With that said... *Here is a list of the immediate advantages of the Piano 5 over the Electro 5* - A better keybed for pianists: 73 or 88 key Triple Sensor keybed with Grand Weighted action. This versus the waterfall semi-weighted or the HP from the NE5. - NP5 has the "virtual Hammer Action Tech" which is good if you want that authentic acoustic piano feel. - Two layers. The NE5 has only a single layer. (this is a HUGE feature to consider as the extra layer really helps with music making and song emulation) - Split Crossfades - Seamless Transitions - More memory (lots more) for both engines: 2 GB/1GB versus 1GB/256MB - More polyphony (lots more) for both engines: 120 / 40 versus 60/15 - Pedal noise and support for the Triple Pedal (again, more suited to people looking for traditional piano features). - 7 Split Points versus 6 - Vibrato in the synth engine. - Glide option (portamento) (this is a big deal for synth sounds) - Unison Option (this is another big deal for synth sounds) - Layer detune only applies if you have multiple layers, which the Piano 5 has) - Dynamic Compression - The effects are nearly identical, but the Piano 5 has the edge in the reverb department, offering both a Normal, Bright, and Dark setting along with a Chorale effect. Most notable, however, is the inclusion of the "Cathedral" reverb which is almost worth the price of admission. This is my favorite reverb when creating ambient sounds (think worship/space/ethereal sounds). So the NS5 is a clear winner in almost every department. (Obviously, you pay a higher price for it as well ). Now, what will you be missing from your NE5? - Set List/Song Mode option. The NE5 has a very handy set list option absent on the latest Nord keyboards for some reason. - Organ engine and rotary speaker effect. Yes, you can play some basic organ sounds on your NP5, but nothing like what you get with the NE5 rotary effect and classic B3 emulation. - No optional half-moon switch option. (If you don't have a rotary speaker, you don't need a half-moon switch option). If I missed anything, people can make a note of it with a new comment and then I'll simply update this comment here. Good luck! (I really should make this into a video). - Marc 🎹

Hey I'm struggling to get the best possible natural sounding piano sound from my nord electro 6d and the closest Rhodes sound. Can you recommend which banks to use and how to tweak them? Everything I do ends sounding somewhat mechanical and not like the real deal. Thanks!

Hi Tom. This is a challenging question. And when it comes down to sound, beauty is in the ear of the beholder. First, I would make sure for this test/exploration you use a good pair of headphones. This will allow you to hear the sounds in their best state and it makes it easier to judge the choices and rule out any possible quality/EQ issues that sometimes arrive from a PA/keyboard amp. Each piano and Rhodes sound is sampled based on a variety of piano manufacturers and recorded using various techniques, mic positions, etc. So, as you know, there are differences (sometimes subtle) when you take a close look at each. And the sounds loaded on your Nord today are not the complete library available from the Nord website. In addition, be mindful of the piano "sizes" as this can make a slight difference in the quality/realism too. With all that said, I'll tell you what I like (and keep in mind beauty is in the ear of the beholder) 😄 Electric Piano: EPiano 4 MKV and don't use any of the EQ settings. I also like the EP8 Nefertiti Lrg. With that, I set reverb to "Stage" with dry/wet at 5.7 and "bright" option. Then you can use the standard EQ effects to taste. You can also experiment with Tremelo 1 and Chorus 1 to add some depth but use sparingly. *For Piano my favorites are:* Royal Grand 3D LG Italian Grand LG Lady D LG For pianos, I like to include "String Resonance and Soft Release". The manual EQ makes a big difference with the piano sometimes for the better, sometimes not. You could use the same reverb setting as above. Hope that helps get the conversation started at least. I'm not sure there is a one size fits all here. I can also tell you that when you find your favorite sounds as heard at home with headphones, it will change wildly once you are at the gig playing with musicians and with different sound systems/speakers, etc.

Seamless transitions need to be clarified. It was said here that if you sustain a sound with the sustain pedal, the sound doesn't change until you play a new note. What happens to the old sustained sound at that point. Does it continue with old sound, does it continue with the new sound, or are the notes just killed to silence. Although I prefer the sound of the Nord Stage 3, the Korg Kronos continues to play the original sustained sounds so that the sounds overlap, and long release sounds.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@itsjusterthought Thank you for your comment here and request to clarify. I just did some testing just now and I'll break this down into separate considerations for us: 1) Sustain Pedal. When holding the sustain pedal on a sound that would sustain indefinitely (like a synth sound versus a piano), so long as you are holding the sustain pedal through the transition, the previous sound will be heard until you lift the sustain pedal. 2) Reverb: You'll hear the reverb from the previous sound for as long as it is set to when transitioning to the new sound. 3) Delay: You'll hear the delay from the previous sound for a bit (several seconds) but not for as long as it may have been originally set for. If you set a delay to have a tail that lasts let's say 10 seconds, you might get about 4 seconds after you transition. The amount seems to be pre-determined. 4) Release: Similar to the delay, you maintain some release during the transition but not as much as you originally set it to. The amount seems to be pre-determined and my best guess is about 4 seconds. So even if you set the release to 45 seconds (the max), you'll get about 4 after you transition. In summary, the seamless transition seems to be exact for the sustain pedal and reverb. For delay and release, however, you still get some seamless transitioning happening, but not as much as what you originally set the dials to. Hope that helps! Great question and never until today did I analyze all 4 of these nuances here and their individual behavior. Oh, and another side note while we're at it. If you set the synth to use the arpeggiator and hold the sustain pedal while it's arpeggiating, it will hold through the arpeggiation through the transition until the sustain pedal is released. Could make for some interesting performance options there.

Hey Mark. Just wondering if you happen to know if there is a different between keybed on Nord 3 88 and Electro 6 hp? Thank you!
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrey. Yes, there is definitely a difference between the two keybeds. They are both weighted keyboards yes, but the hammer action portable is constructed in a different way. And to me (and perhaps many others) it has more resistance than the 88 key (slightly harder to play). From what I've read, most people who have played both the 88 key and the 76 key tend to like the feel of the 88 key a bit better. But with anything, each person's opinion is different and this is very much a personal choice. Both keybeds are made by Fatar who makes keyboards for a lot of other synth/keyboard manufacturers. The Nord grand is the one keybed made by Kawaii which is supposed to be even better than the Stage 88 key and it also has the triple sensors. The Nord Grand is really good for pure pianists I would say. In any case, if you are on the fence between the 88 and the 76, you'll like find a preference for the 88 key if that also fits in your budget and your space. You really won't be upset with either. I have the 76 and because it provides quite a bit of resistance, it's actually good to strengthen the hands during practice. But then again, my favorite keybed is the semi-weighted and that's mainly because I'm a synth guy first, piano player second. Great question - good luck with your continued research... 👍🏼

@@777Witness Yes, I have an Electro 6D semi-weighted waterfall. I think it's fine for piano playing especially if you are comfortable playing on semi-weighted keybeds in general. Now, not everyone will agree with this of course - especially if you were born and raised playing a traditional piano. On that note, here's another video where I take an interesting approach to comparing the two keybeds (Hammer Action versus Semi-Weighted waterfall on a previous Nord Electro 5): kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3nco3l8lJWrmJY

Thanks very much. I have a question, and I hope you will see it. I don't understand these 3 engines and panels. Using the Electro 6, suppose I want to layer a piano with strings and a pad? The strings and pad would be in the synth engine. Right? So does this mean I can't have a piano, strings and a pad -- just a piano, an organ and a pad? And on the Stage 3 I could have a piano, plus strings and a pad on the synth engine? I really am not much interested in the organ sounds. Thanks so much!!! I'm getting close to decision time.
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Granny Rocks TV! Sorry for the delay on this response. The Electro 6 has only a single synth engine that can be played/heard at one time. So, therefore, you will not be able to play both strings and a pad at the same time. The Nord Stage3 has the ability to play two panels at one time and each panel has its own Organ, Piano, and Synth. This means that you could have stings on panel A for example, and a Pad on panel B. Then you can have the Stage 3 play both panels at the time providing the effect you are looking for.

My Keys To Music Thank you. You are very gracious. I ended up buying a Dexibell S1 as a gigging keyboard with lighter weight keys. I already have the S7Pro, but it’s heavy for my 75 year old husband, and the action is tough for me too. (I am disabled, and I find an good acoustic grand is much easier to play, but it’s tough to carry a 7-foot grand piano!) The regular NOrds are too tough for me too. I realize that for most people, these are not issues, but I get even more crippled playing the digital keyboards. Anyway the S1 has a semi-weighted action. I just have to get used to playing 68 keys on the road. Haha. Thanks again. By the way, you are the only one who alerted me to the size of the waterfall keys and you got me realizing more about the semi-weighted keys as well. That was super important in my research. Thank you again.

Roland FA 08 is old but offers audio over usb. This allows me to send vst patches out the FA L/R outs without the need for a separate audio interface. Any insight on why Nords dont have this ?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hello @Harold You asked a very popular question and we are no closer to an answer on this. I suspect adding the ability to send audio over USB is that much more complex for the manufacturer and perhaps they just had to draw the line as to what was possible/feasible? That would be my guess. Nord is a much smaller company than Roland so there could be an "economy of scale" at play. So, I really don't know the answer and I don't see this changing anytime soon. An Audio interface is required I'm afraid. Good question - it comes up a lot.

@@MyKeysToMusic thanks for the answer. I guess we’ll keep the FA for some time to come. I’ll still go ahead and get the Nord Grand and Nord Electro 6D for church and reserve the FA for synth work as well as when we need vst stuff. Later in the year maybe I’ll look more into the newly announced Fantom 0 I saw a few hours ago. But for now The Nords will be primarily for piano and organ works. What do u think of that ? 2 Nords and an FA for proper synth snd vst stuff?
@MyKeysToMusic
@MyKeysToMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@harold12A I think that is a terrific plan. The Nords do great for pianos and organs. The FA is going to be a more capable synth overall and if it can play VSTs, even better. If someone was starting from scratch, I might have them lean towards a Stage 3 and/or a Nord Wave 2 which also have decent synth capability and they wouldn't have to learn two platforms. However, in your case, since you already know Roland, I think your plan is a good one!
