Nord Stage 2 keyboard velocity sensing repair.

in this video I repair a Nord stage 2 keyboard with a velocity sensing problem. I am sure that it is very much the same for all Nord keyboards and possibly other makes as well.

Thanks a lot Derek, 28 screws later everything is fine again. In my case one F calculated the velocity wrong. If I pushed very slow, it was quiet, everything else was always max. Some small pice of something on the contacts was easy to see. It seems like the first repair of a Stage 2EX, which was built in December 2015 (so the stickers inside tell).

Thanks Derek, this really heped, in spite of having a Waterfall action Stage2, I applied more or less the same processes. I cleaned the sensors with some air in a can and my glasses wipe. Sorted the problem. Only problem I have one screw I found after (!)

I see that you have the Nord Stage 2 EX. I have the basic Nord Stage 2 and the keyboard mechanism seems to be different. The weights appear to be in front of the keys on your model but they are underneath the keys on mine. More importantly pressing down the key and pulling doesn't seem to disengage the key on mine (or maybe I just wasn't pulling hard enough as I didn't want to break it). Fortunately the defective key on my keyboard was the very bottom A key and so by squirting some WD40 into the side of the velocity sensor, coupled with sliding a very thin blade covered with a strip of rag under the sensor cover without disturbing it I seem to have been able to fix the problem. I'm glad you found a solution. Please note that WD40 will thicken up with time, and because it leaves a residue it will attract dirt. I recommend that you use alcohol spray to flush it clean and leave it to dry for 24 hours.

How long did it take you to repair? I just ordered the contactstrip and I’m wondering if I can do it myself.

It took maybe one hour. You don't need to buy the contact strip. Even if you do, you MUST do the cleaning of the circuit board as well as the contacts before closing up.

Great vid, but for 6K, you shouldn't have these issues, this would never happen with a Roland board

My dear Stacey. I have repaired MANY Roland and Korg keyboards through the years with exactly the same problem. It's mostly about the environment and climate where the keyboards find themselves. Humidity, dust, dry static air all play a role. Oh, and heavy gigging. And beer!
