No lifejacket and if I was working like that I would have my dry suit on as well. 4 hours survival in cold seas sure beats a few minutes if you lucky. I always have a p.l.b. attached to my lifejacket too. Over 30 years working at sea and you don't get second chances.

Good to have a woman that's not just on the boat for her looks but she can also navigate and watch your back when you have to handle something else, good job lady. It seems from this short vid the boat was doing okay with the rough waters.

Just turn 180 degrees the boat, give the aft to the winds and seas and secure the anchor smoothly and without danger to fall overboard, or you where in a terrible hurry ???? But next time make sure you have anchor and other moving parts secured and lashed before going to the sea. Experience from Kadey Krogen 42'

Once the issue was known about, you could have powered down and fixed it. The Nordhavn 55 would be fine in this type of weather. No life jacket, or attached line at all? I think this is a good video on what NOT to do!!!

No. The slower you go the more the waves are gonna move the vessel.

I’ve seen some stupid things but this tops it. You go overboard and you’re gone, plain and simple.
@HenryGT3

The problem with slowing down is that you would lose a lot of the effect from the stabilisers. It's hard to see from the video but it doesn't look as though turning around would have presented a risk from the beam sea if timed correctly. If that were the case then run downwind whilst the person is on deck. The motion of the vessel would be less severe, the rope or whatever could have been tied and the person returned to safety. We weren't there so purely speculation.

Turn downwind in rough conditions if you have to do foredeck work. It's safer.

How about power to idle, and wearing a lifejacket and lifeline .......

gee, that would be the safe way to do it,, but.. I guess they had a good insurance policy on that poor guy.

You don't want to back power to idle in rough seas. You need to keep motoring into the waves so the boat doesn't take a wave on the beam and capsize you.

If you go to idle than that makes the rocking and motion of the boat worse in these waters... A life jacket would have been smart

Let me just put my two cents in here....I was a commercial fishing captain for 18 years from gom to the Bering sea...... a big displacement with low hp like a 50 Longliner I ran in the gulf takes a lil skill to stay strait and keep tension off the scope I sure wouldn’t want my wife doing it because u run that scope over and it’s game over you fooled the prop and lost ur anchor that boat would be on the rocks in my humble opinion

The life jacket missing is noteworthy. Make certain he updates his last will and testament. Decks wet, wind, bobbing ship, water coming over the bow....careless hardly describes being without a lifejacket. Goodluck.

because they lack experience and boat handling skills. they should have known the weather was coming. and everything should be lashed down before heading out. period.

Jim Young I assuming you're a boater, so you know this feeling I have where you just can't wrap your head around things like this. No matter if it looks great out, my wife and I get everything ready to run before we leave a safe harbor. I mean how can you not know that...Boating is awesome as long as you respect the fact that shit can go wrong quick.

@@123HighVelocity absolutely correct mate,I would compare it to the tourists who climb Ben Nevis on a blazing hot day only to find cold weather and fog roll in half way up. The 5 p,s in all aspects of life,it is no guarantee of safety but it at least gives you the highest chance of survival in bad circumstances. I see boats out sometimes that make me shudder if the weathe turned.

There is that thing called a throttle,, you use it to slow down so he can do what he needs to without getting knocked overboard. Geez
@RealityIsTheNow
@RealityIsTheNow 9 жыл бұрын
+Jim Young Um. Waves don't care about your throttle position. You have to go over them regardless. And, in point of fact, its more important to maintain a course so that one can maneuver. You move slower (or stop, which would be idiotic) you lose control.

you have no idea what you are talking about. if the anchor needed securing slow the boat and or turn downwind while the repair is being made. The Nordhavn can take alot more than that but the boor bastard on the bow can't.

Jim stop sounding like a complete dumbass throttling down will make the boats pitch and roll in the waves even worse.

Slow down while he’s on the bow, just keep enough throttle to hold the course you want. Also dude we all spend a ton of time on the water, enough to know to have a life jacket or line on. Imagine if you went overboard in that weather with your wife at the helm. Chances are by the time she got turned around she wouldn’t be able to find you before drowning, and would more than likely blame herself, even though it’s your fault.
