Did you feel like you had enough room around the edges of the tree to applique? I was worried the sequins would get in the way and was considering doing the sequins after adding the backing (leaving the bottom open obviously)

Yes there’s room. I stitch between each of the sequins so it helps me with spacing the stitches :)
