Richmond seems to be more upbeat and vibrant Norfolk is really nice but Richmond has a grit to it like DC and Baltimore.

Richmond is the capital of the state and the main city of its metro area. Norfolk is basically like a suburb.

@Jhonathan Cabrera Richmond is the capital, but Norfolk is a bigger city, and is the main city of a metro area that dwarfs Richmonds metro. In fact, one of norfolks suburbs (Virginia Beach) is the most populated city in Virginia. The reason why Richmond seems more upbeat and gritty is due to the fact that much of downtown Norfolk was torn down in the 80's for gentrification. Also, Norfolk has more sprawl to it, whereas Richmond puts almost all of its emphasis on downtown.

@@kazeryu17biggest city but biggest county is Fairfax with 1.1 mil and Henrico and Chesterfield county in the Richmond area both have almost as much as Va Beach people forgotten Va has a urban county laws where all cities and counties are independent of each other so instead of a city belonging to a county the county is just a city or rural town itself so Richmond Metro area is basically the same size as Hampton roads but more city because it's the only area based off of the major city north Va or Hampton roads are areas but Richmond is the area

Norfolk Virginia is definitely underrated. Norfolk has the same issue as Chicago, but on a smaller scale. It's a big city, with a slightly above average crime rate when compared to other American cities, but because of the amount of people who live here, it makes the news alot for violent crime. This, along with the racist tendencies of people who judge this city creates a stigma that it is a very dangerous city, which you would know to be false if you have actually lived in a legitimately dangerous city. Norfolk has good people and bad people. There are nice neighborhoods, and rough neighborhoods. As long as you don't hang out in the rough neighborhoods all the time and associate with the wrong people, you can have a good time here. Downtown is very safe, and the only thing you really have to worry about are people breaking into your car if you leave valuables in sight. People tent to focus on the negatives, so the positive things go unnoticed.

It gets busyer in the summer time, and can get super busy on the weekends or durring events. The Virginia Beach Oceanfront is about 30 minutes to the east, and Williamsburg is about 40 minutes north. Both those places tend to draw the tourist crowds. There are also several other urban areas within 30 minutes like VB Town Center, Penenensula Town Center, Old Town Portsmouth, Downtown Suffolk, Downtown Hampton, Downtown Newport News, and Summit Pointe, as well as major suburban malls and big box areas. There is usually a light crowd, but Downtown Norfolk can also be either dead, or packed depending on the day. The crowd tends to hop around the region.

And I forgot to mention Ghent. Just north of Downtown is an area called Ghent. Ghent doesn't have as many tall buildings, but it has alot of businesses, a steady crowd and is where the locals hang out.
