This reportage documents a certain period and is an interesting piece for those who enjoy to have an historical view. The scale of the manoeuvre which involves all the arms, is really impressive. The public of the 2020's is certainly not conscious any more of the level of commitment of the countries during the 1980's.

It is interesting to see footage of excercises from what is almost certainly the early '80s. I understand that some of the British forces who fought in the Falklands War went there straight from training in Norway. I imagine that the cold weather and rugged terrain in Norway helped prepare them for the very challenging conditions they operated under in the South Atlantic.

Actually, the British troops, who were Arctic trained, were part of the the NATO ACE Mobile Force. NATO did not give permission for them to be withdrawn from their NATO role so they could fight in the Falklands. All British troops used in the Falklands were forces not part of any standing NATO forces, such as the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). Of course, if NATO went to war then the UK would allocate these troops to NATO.

@@magnuslauglo5356 Understandable. Britain's main Arctic troops are the Royal Marines (Part of the Royal Navy) and they did serve in the Falklands War. However, the British Army did have other units that were Arctic trained at that time but were part of the ACE Mobile Force. The Infantry component was the Princess of Wales' Own Regiment (Yorkshire), but they were not released by NATO to fight in the Falklands.¨ The Para's, the Guards and Gurkhas were not Arctic trained at that time. A testament to their core training, abilities and fighting spirit that enabled them to fight in such adverse conditions without specialist training.

@@winnie796 are you saying that the Royal Marines who went to the Falklands had not gone through Winter training in Norway? Or that of the British troops they were the only one who had done so?

@@magnuslauglo5356 The Royal Marines will have undergone Arctic training some months prior to the war, which was part of their annual training cycle.. The Army units (Paras, Guards and Gurkhas) will not have undergone Arctic training before the Falklands War.
