In Quebec (eastern Canada) we've got about the same temperature swings as you get (+35C to -40C, even lower in the north as I've seen -48C personally), but I never got any trouble with mower decks; is it because you're nearer to the sea and the air is full of salt?

This was a very good return on the price of that bigger & better engine - congrats. It's perfect that you had a clean carb and refurb'ed starter to put on the "new" GVC190. When you did the compression test, I'm glad you mentioned to spin the engine so that the compression release does not distort the reading. As an example, I recently tested the compression on the OHV Tecumseh 6 HP on my Ariens snow blower, and at first, I forgot about the compression release and pulled the rope. I got numbers around 50-55 PSI. Then I remembered what I was doing wrong, and plugged in the electric start, and I got around 130 PSI, which is not bad for a 2008 engine. I will have to use a drill & socket to spin my mower's engine some time and see how that one is.

I did this when I swapped out the Briggs on the Ninja Snapper for the Kawasaki. Kawasaki and Briggs are set up backwards as far as intake and exhaust so it was really interesting. Shaft size was different and the Deere the Kawa was on had a blade clutch which ended up making a fine blade adapter and a copper 90 degree sweat fitting ended up making another exhaust gas outlet from the mower to get the exhaust away from the plastic bag chute. After finally after everything got fitted it's run perfectly from then on. And yes, I'd do it again. Good job and Thanks!

The swap was a good idea and got a decent price on it too. I hope you still take the other engine apart though just so we can see the damage. I have a garage full of good used engine parts. Mostly cause I can't help myself and break down broken engines into usable spare parts. I often sell them on eBay if I build up too big of a supply of any one thing. My wife just shakes her head when she looks at my wall bins and rolls her eyes as she walks by me. 😝

I've had the same mower for 12-15 years. This past year it started wearing out, loose drive train, motor smoking a little, etc. I decided to buy a new one and looked around. Ended up finding a free Honda mower on the curb that seemed in decent shape so I brought it home. It wouldn't run and I found the ground was loose. I fixed that and it started right up. Did some maintenance (oil, sharpen blade, adjust drive train) and it's working perfectly. Would I do an engine swap? probably not. People in my area throw things out when they have even the simplest issue, so getting a free mower would be a simple FB Marketplace or Craigslist search.

Not a bad price for that engine since you already had another to take parts off of, and you can always disassemble the old engine and sell the parts on eBay to make your money back. This past winter I bought a 1971 Ariens snow thro snowblower for cheap but it didn't come with an electric starter, I found someone selling a junk one and got it for $40, which is what it would cost for a used starter alone, I parted out everything and made about $200.

A great repair vid, I have one to do some drive belt replacement on. I think you should also suggest to measure crank length from bottom of engine mount face to shaft blade bolt up. Great job! I would like to see a rebuild on the old engine. Since most engines have carburetor problems from poor storage, it would be somewhat of a PITA, but it would make a great video!
@HomeGaragechannel
@HomeGaragechannel 2 жыл бұрын
if I recall the main issue, on this and most Hondas, was a lack of lubrication, from zero maintenance. The upper bearing, was absolutely trashed, because it's the furthest away, from what little Oil was available. To rebuild it, I would have to replace the upper back half, of the block or put a sleeve in. The first option, would be "economically" unviable, and the second would require machining, which I'm certain would not be cheap either.

Is that a clutch/PTO for the blades? Have to say that's the first time I've ever seen that on a push mower. Is it a new thing or maybe just less common? Only push mowers I've ever used have been a straight shaft down to the blades (and belt drive to the front wheel drive). Either way excellent well put together video. I wonder if there's any noticeable difference in power (such as in tough grass conditions, tall/thick/wet, etc) between the GCV160 and 190. Also to answer the question, as someone who does all my own work on my vehicles (aside from inspections and tires), I would for sure engine swap a mower. For me it's worth the learning experience and to have the job done correctly.

Thanks for the comment Ixionn, a clutch PTO has been around for awhile, mainly available for commercial equipment, but it was an option for residential grade too. Most people didn't buy them tho has the price was a bit then normal for it.

Why you pour the oil out of a small engine like this, I'd find like an old 8x8 baking pan and sit that inside the oil drain pan, I've found when you pour the thick straight 30 or Xw40 or Xw50 oil out of a mower into an automotive drain pan meant to hold several quarts you really can't transfer the oil to another container to ger rid of it since it's thick and a half quart of oil just sticks to the sides of the big pan but an 8x8 pan is about perfect and you can pour the majority of it out without having to waste half a roll of paper towels to wipe almost a half a quart of oil that's spread out over an automotive size catch pan.

Excellent, & great filming. I did the opposite; I put a GCV160 on a high end HRX217. It is working great and, yes, three bolts will hold just fine although four obviously provides added strength. My donor engine came from a Husqvarna mower & was cast with just 3 threaded bolt holes. The GCV190 is listed as having 8.4 ft. lbs. of torque vs. 6.9 for the GCV160. So, about 21% more ...but both are tough engines & plenty powerful enough.

My video on my other channel will tear down a B&S engine to try and rebuild it, but in the end, the cost is prohibitive. The piston, rings, rod and both gasket was over $100. Even if you don't replace your rod, you said the valves need to be replaced? both of them cost as much as the rod so it's still the same price. My dads Honda lawnmower has the 186cc GSV190 engine fitted as well & it needs a rebuild as it burns oil at 18 years of age. Once it comes to engine swaps you have to know what you're doing with ride on lawnmowers (lawn tractors) because they have a PTO clutch fitted which needs a suitably sized generator on it to run it. You need to decide whether you need a charging system at all. As far as scrap lawnmowers go they get recycled in my area anyway,our local aluminium smelter recycles aluminium & I'm looking forward to hearing from them about work !

It's not hard to swap an engine. The hardest part about it is dealing with a seized blade adapter and reattaching the mounting bolts when installing the new one on the deck. This one turned out really well. I would have probably done the same thing with this one.

Depends on deck quality. An old Toro/Snapper aluminum deck yeah why not? Old beaten up, naa. Question, have you ever replaced those carb bolts with a/an all thread and nut setup? All the gaskets and shields on that carb is a booger bear for assy..... TIA

If i had that mower with the blade clutch i would just remove the whole blade clutch system and just modify the mower to use it without the complicated system.

Nice video! My only critique is that you missed having the drive belt pulley key installed at 8:40. If it's missing, the pulley can (most likely will) spin and damage the crank snout.

I picked up a Honda HRR216vxa at the junk yard. I have put over $175 dollars into it for all the parts it was missing. It’s too late to turn back now. The problem I am having with it is, the engine vibrates uncontrollably at high rpm but not low rpm. I thought it might be a bench crank shaft but the vibration goes away when I engage the blades with the roto stop. I’ve replaced the blue bearing that attaches the blade adapter to the crank shaft. The motor does not have any weird noises or knocks at low rpm or when the blades are engages. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
