sad.machines here, First, I want to thank Alexi for asking me about some early itasha photos, cars and stuff used in his video and presentation, as well as complimenting and showcasing some of my work. I didn't expect that at all and I don't think I could thank you enough. I want to give a bit of extra knowledge about some stuff featured throughout the video that I've found while researching older itasha events and cars, saving nearly 7,500 photos in the process. 0:29 Itasha wasn't always the name everyone used. A lot of early meetings/car shows often used 萌車 or "Moesha", which arguably describes them better. I don't know why, or when more and more people started using one over the other. 4:29 IIRC, the Hiace on the right has been going to Itasha and Vanning events since 2010, all the way up to 2024, and has had at least 2 different airbrushed murals across the rear tailgate 5:03 Comiket 71 is one of the first large gathering of itasha, and the locale was used multiple times for the early "autosalone" itasha meets 5:19 According to an old blog post from 2010, each airbrushed mural on the FD cost 100,000yen. Keep in mind it had both doors, the hood and rear quarters painted as well, so it was definitely a passion project, with a ton of money put into the paint alone. 5:28 That Corvette is actually a Vertex demo of sorts. It was made with ASCII.jp and Vertex/T&E to promote the Lucky Star Itayu engine oil, other wise known as 痛油 "Itayu". It was produced and sold by Vertex at their shops back in 2009. Also the hood features a fake tear opening to reveal the engine inside, but for some reason the graphic is actually flipped 180 degrees on the design. 5:41 the Tokyo Import Car Show was one of the first major itasha gatherings that featured solely imported/non domestic cars. 5:51 The Obayashi Factory/Art Factory/Exit Tunes Silverado is an odd vehicle. All 3 mentioned brands made quite a few itasha throughout the years and most notably Exit Tunes produced the Itasha Trance mix CDs that featured the Art Factory designed Ferrari F430 back in 2008. The Silverado has the same kind of design style, but afaik wasn't used to promote the CD or anything else, but is still cool nonetheless. 6:55 afaik, those 2 Nanoha Testarossas are not the same car, but I believe the same person owned them both. The Black one is from 2011, the Red is from 2013, which uses some of the same parts from the black car. From a blog post, the Black version was only shown at Ita G Festa 2011, and no where else. 7:03 The Super Sonico Stratos dates back to 2008 at the first Ita G Festa, where it had a Kouzuki Yuuko design, and was displayed with a similar Gallardo and M5 that also featured Muv-Luv designs, which makes me believe it was a company backed display car as multiple blog posts say that it was provided by Good Smile. As for the Sonico version, I think it existed until 2012 or so where I think the same car appeared at a Good Smile display booth without the itasha, and a comment saying it was a replica of the one in the Muv Luv movie. 7:20 The Remila Scarlet Cadillac dates back to 2006, being seen at the same Comiket as the airbrushed FD. 7:44 The Limo was photographed around 2013, but has had multiple different itasha through the years, assuming it's the same car. Most notably featured on the cover of Itasha Trance 2 and possibly dates back to 2009. 8:40 Yottare's integra is a work of art IMO. The versions of that car through the years from 2009 to 2024. The car has been wrapped multiple different colors, insanely complex designs. It's one of my favorite cars within the entire culture and is a true example of dedication. 13:37 The StudioR Tacchi Camaro featured is another iconic itasha that has progress since it's initial basic version in 2008 that started as a basic cut vinyl to an insane demo car of complex wrapping techniques and new materials, just like the printed sidewall. 16:32 The "BakaCuda" Crown is another example is an amazingly creative, top tier itasha. The interior is fully custom, even including a dreamcast and TV in the back, and the interior has recently been converted to LHD. 19:52 As crazy as the Miku tailgate is, it's not the first time the owner has done a 3D design. It's the same van that had the hand made Madoka Magica design that was circulating a few years ago. 21:40 With how popular as Uma Musume is, you'd figure there would be multiple cars with the same character, but Twin Turbo might be one of the most interesting as there's also a R34 Skyline, and C6 Corvette with her as well, and the 3 cars displayed together at the Fuji Speedway Itasha event a few years ago. 21:47 It may not look like it, but this is one of the craziest examples of the juxtaposition of itasha design. The S2000 with Gura is 100% hand cut vinyl on both sides of the car, while the Hakos Evo is one of the most complicated, full car wraps made in the recent years. 25:19 This GSR and Black Falcon collab in 2019 actually had one more car, featuring Promare to go along side the matching Fate and Miku designs. 2 out of the 3 cars not only finished the race, but came in 3rd in both class, and overall. 27:20 While there were a ton of Eva and Miku cars that raced through the years, a few other notable cars included the Ika Musume Ferrari F430 and Dijon Racing C6 from the 2012 Super GT season. The Dijon Racing corvette was eventually sold, and supposedly used as the base for Daigo's D1 Corvette. 28:55 Yes, the oil was scented. No it didn't keep the scent after being within the engine. 29:29 Unless I can find other info, this might be the first instance of a racing car using an anime character as part of it's design. Therefore, Sam Bass' YuGiOh Nascar from 2003 might be one of the first actual itasha race cars to exist. I keep searching to prove my self wrong, but I haven't found anything yet. There was the alleged Pokemon x TV Guide cup car that used Pikachu on the hood, but I don't count that as an itasha. 30:37 This is my "Haul-O X" Silverado. It's an OBS Chevy Tandem Phantom Dually "minitruck" made as hauler for the accompanying 4 vehicles, each one designed for the entirety of Holo X, Lui, La+, Iroha, Chloe and Koyori. All the tribals are hand drawn, scratch made, with the Character poses being done in MMD. 30:45 That compliment had me tearing up. I had no clue Alexi was gonna do this video, or include my stuff within it, I can't thank him enough for the kind words and support. 31:02 This is the "GolShi30" based off of a C30 Silverado owned by a friend, hauling my Triple Crown Racing Team pro street project, featuring Gold Ship, Silence Suzuka and Daiwa Scarlet, all different gen Toyota Crowns, styled after the 80's Pro Street craze. 31:10 I could write a book on how much work went into Polkarado, but it features scratch made wheels inspired by Polka's ahoge, about 30 or so hours worth of tribal work, and not only did the rear have R32 lights in the roll pan, I also added the side skirts, mirrors and vents to the front bumper. 31:40 The Nascar stuff is an on going project, since that render I've made 7 more cars with more on the way, all thanks to numerous friends for helping me with art like Holeecrab and Haow.424, and Arhentol collabing with me on the following Good Smile Racing Dirt Late Model. 32:55 Pippa, if you're reading this I did not say that, I only thought it. The LaLion Ferrari was a trial of taking Pippa's rough design, and comments about what she liked about Alexi's itasha video and try to make it into a properly designed itasha. 35:22 Yes, everyone wants to joke about this car, but the owner is truly dedicated. The car was shown at ItaG Festa 2012, and the hood made solely for the event. Afterwards he made a blog post stating "he had no idea it was going to be that popular" with the original tweet getting over 5,000 retweets supposedly. He's had a Shana itasha since 2009, changing the design multiple times, even ending up being the cover car of the first volume of Itasha Tengoku in 2015. 37:14 This is one of the cars I'm trying to find a photo and history of the most. I would love to find a shot of it in pristine condition at an event, but no luck yet. 37:40 Girls und Panzer's festival in Orai has had an amazing itasha presence throughout the years, and the show having multiple official itashas with J's Racing and even sponsoring Pacific Racing Team in 2015 on Nomuken's Skyline.

Extra info for 25:19 The car that finished are the Black Falcon Promare AMG GT3 (Pro Class, driver that brought it home is Maro Engel) And GSR Hatsune Miku AMG GT3 (Silver Class, forgot the driver who brought that home, but iirc none are Japanese drivers) As mentioned, both are 3rd on their respective class, with Promare also being 3rd OVERALL. Still being heralded as the greatest Itasha car to ever grace an International GT Racing. Slim chance we gonna see Miku having a comeback next year (on Spa24), but at least we are looking forward for her performance at Suzuka1000 next year. Also, thank you sadmachine for being the g.o.a.t for Itasha history archival ❤

Here in Southeast Asia, the itasha scene is mostly filled with 125-250cc motorcycles, either in underbone shaped bike (or usually people call it scooter) or normal (naked & fairing) bikes. And their design (especially fairing bike since they have bigger surface area) are really good! Ofc there are some actual itasha cars too, but for youngsters or even adults who can't afford the car, the design, and the wrapping cost, making itasha motorcycle is another way of showing their passion and love!

A little more history/background to add to the vid. Japan's obsession with "Maids" and their outfits started from a restaurant here on Oahu called Anna Miller's. (They have great pies BTW) It became super popular with the Japanese tourists coming here, so much so that they ended up opening restaurants all over Tokyo. The place isn't even in Waikiki/Honolulu its in Aiea, off the path for tourists so not sure how it got discovered Maybe a place to get food on the way back from dole or visiting the North Shore?. And maybe since Pearl Ridge mall had just opened that was the draw? It being the only other mall on the island after Ala Moana at the time.

recently (well, like a year or 2 ago) genshin impact did a collab with cadillac and sold special itasha CT4 and CT5s(?) with some genshin characters on them. In the "history" part, it may be worth noting the era of "psychedelic art" of cars in the 60s with the hippie movement which featured highly intricate airbrush work, and sometimes included a figure of some sort as a primonant feature of the artwork. although usually not tied to a specific character (though sometimes pop cultire icons such as jimmy hendrix would fill this role), these generic people displayed in the art often followed many of the design rules later adapted for itasha, and overall conveyed a similar sort of appearence, albeit with none of the prior media to draw design cues from, so they followed the general psychedelic art genre of the time.

If you think about it, vans from the 60’s and 70’s with there murals could be a earlier example of a itasha from the west

THIS is the first time ever I am late for a Noriyaro video because LIFE came in the way LOL. 3 days..... Anyway I wish I could do this on one of my cars but was a risk lol especially in the early 2000s in Australia. I really liked the recent one....or last years video of the disappearing Itasha wrap. The one you could see in a certain angle. Thats actually really cool.

Oh sweet. I was at the con for the original presentation. I can't wait to see this and I really hope that you could show everything in full and not censor anything..
