Heidevolk does this differently. Their version has a more upbeat energy to it, however this does not make it inherently better or worse, simply different. I personally never even knew this version existed till about 3 months after finding the Heidevolk cover, and I found that this one fits certain tastes better.

It's all a matter of personal taste,this is the first version that i listened to and i liked it because it is folk and it's rithm fits "better" with the subject,it makes you want to be a caveman while Heidevolk version...how should i say this,yea,it's a nice track but that's it,i never listen to it more than 3 times while this one...i have passed 80 times in one year.

Klopt, dit nummer is van het album Normalis Jubilaris uit 1990; het album De Strijdlust is Geboren van Heidevolk is 15 jaar jonger. Wellicht is dat de reden dat héél veel mensen denken dat het een liedje van Heidevolk is. Desalniettemin ben ik Joris Bochtdrinker en zijn mannen dankbaar dat zij na 15 alsnog bekendheid aan deze schitterende track hebben weten te geven. Jammergenoeg heeft Normaal er de brui aan gegeven anders had ik Saksenland van het Heidevolkalbum Walhalla Wacht weleens door Normaal willen zien worden gecoverd!!!

The funny thing is that this song is clearly inspired by the Dutch cover by the Cocktail Trio of "Alley Oop" by the Hollywood Argyles, which, with that series not published in the papers in the Netherlands put the cave man in de Achterhoek, and that was the homeland of Normaal as demonstrated by titles like "Achterhoek, oh Achterhoek", "D'n Achterhoek Tsjoek" and "Achterhoek Boogie", so the Achterhoek honour had to be defended with this song.

Came here after doing some research to see if this 'Vulgaris Magistralis' was indeed some mythological figure. I agree that both version has 100% energy on its own. Also, never thought that the lyrics would match the epicness of the music so perfectly.

It's just some old latin that means "common master". "Normaal", obviously, means "normal", so the band was just using latin to describe themselves as a band. If you listen to the lyrics and have a good translation, you'll find that the band was just self-aware and humorous about the whole thing. "Ik ben normalis als het waar is" literally just means "I'm normal(is) if that's even true", so he's basically describing himself as a weirdo. And the line "Ik ben normalis archivaris, en ik beitel kronieken in een rots" means "Ik am normal(is), archivist(is) and I carve chronicles in a rock", so he's basically just a mad storyteller living in a cave. Probably high as fuck, bragging about his non-existant exploits.

Nou, eh, nee, de versie van de Heideroosjes is de cover. De versie van Normaal is het origineel. Het komt uit de tweede helft van de jaren 80. Dat kun je trouwens ook aan het lied horen. "In de hoofdrol" refereert aan een programa van Mies Bouwman dat in de jaren 80 populair was. En het nieuws op de radio werd in die tijd nog aangekondigd als "de radio-nieuwsdienst van het ANP".

("Halve Haan" is actually a dish. In Germany, they serve it at oktoberfest, apparently. So he's calling a dinosaur a nice chicken dish.) Wodan and Donar are distant cousins of mine. But I haven't seen them in centuries. I live alone in the night, hunting in the dark. -Refrain: I am vulgaris, Magistralis, and I ride around on a mammoth. I am Vulgaris, Magistralis, and on sunday on a Mastodont. 2) A mad professor had heard of me. And raced to the "Achterhoek" on his Solex. (Achterhoek is a place in the netherlands from whence the band originates, and a Solex is a type of bicycle.) With cameras and lassos do they hunt me. But my cave has never been discovered, and no human saw me. I am a true champion, in a real vision. -Refrain 3) I sneak through the woods of the Achterhoek They want to catch me for the big screen ("Witte doek" means, literally, "white cloth", white rag, or white veil. It's a word the dutch use to mean a cinema screen.) At night and during the wee hours I come out of my cave. ("ontij" means that part of the night during which it is darkest, and during which one has much to fear. "Ontij", I believe, is a bastardization of "ongetijden", which literally means "un-times", as in, bad or wrong times. It's not really translatable in english I believe. Perhaps the hour of the wolf?) Mies Bouwman and Spielberg want me as the lead role. (Mies Bouwman used to be a famous dutch cinematographer.) But they won't get me! No they won't get me! No they will never get me! (never! never! never!) I am vulgaris Magistralis, and I ride around on a mammoth. I am vulgaris, magistralis, and on sunday on a mastodont. I am Normalis Archivaris, and I carve chronicles in a rock. I am Normalis, if that's true, and I work the ladies with my club. (Normalis is an old latin word which means "normal". So the song mocks the idea that this guy is normal. It's also a reference to the band's name, obviously.) That more less is an accurate translation, with some added context.
