Remember, he has drawn, and etched and worked, and re-worked plates and printed images of all these places. He's 'lived' in the place in his head for days if not weeks. That's how he remembers them. Similar to you going on holiday to places and remembering their names.

I don't think it was a learnt script - I suspect he was reading them off a map in his head - he went back at least once to pick up some good names he had passed by.
