I enjoyed this, Thank you for posting. I was going to say that these histories sometimes give a tunneled vision version of events focusing too much on the invaders and leaving out what was going on in the native world. However, he did touch on it here and there and at the end. He even goes so far to say the Normans never conquered which is interesting. I wonder if some would disagree but I like that he raises the issue.

Was interested to learn that the Normans built a stronghold in Limavady. Does any remnant of the building survive? It sees to be a bit of a departure from the practice of only building on the coasts to allow re-supply by sea. Limavady is several miles inland.

@@IrishMedievalHistory Yes... There is said to have been a castle of that name within the modern Roe Valley Country Park although I don't think anything is visible at the surface. I had not heard that the Normans were involved with it however.

Ireland was not unified politically. Infact most of Western Europe wasn’t unified… local lords ran everything and even the kings did not run much.

Around the time of Queen Meadbh +/- 50 bc/ad Ireland had the most impressive & progressive laws than anywhere else in Europe even better than todays standards. For example equal rights for men & women. Instead of capital punishment, if any person committed murder they would have to pay by ways of compensation all their land, cattle & properties. The very same for lesser crimes, if a person had wronged you & yours somehow they too would have to pay accordingly to damage done upon you. Sadly these got diluted and lost throughout time.
