JJ wasn't good in school, but he wasn't lazy. He was a committed painter who eventually got a job in an advertising agency. JJ was exposed (as other Black youths) to the the things that came with living a bad neighborhood, but he kept his integrity and persevered.

John Amos, the actor who played JJ's father was fired in the 3rd season because of his objection to the JJ Walker character. He thought that character and the "dy-no-mite!!" bit was bringing the show down to low comedy.
