David Beasley 1964 Strats sound great because Fender started using enamel wire in the pickups. Gives them that mid scooped tone. 1965 they used polysol and switched back to enamel in 1966 and onwards...

Sweet strat. Every time that Pearl Jam song starts I think it's Jimi for a second. Love it. Great episode as usual. Mark should've brought extra shirts and not mentioned the pre-recording to check if anyone would notice.

Very nice on Lenny, Mark. Man, Stevie was so great. He did his guitar player's home- work and whenever you hear the intro to Lenny you hear how much he absorbed Hendrix. I hear it and I just get this great picture in my mind of Stevie playing this live and how deep he was into it. He was truly a master guitar player, as good as any on the planet and better than all but a select one: Jimi Hendrix. Great demo, super guitar. '64 Strat and a Deluxe reverb, a match made in Gear Heaven. I'd put Jeff Beck right there at the top, too. He's the only guy that ranks with Jimi and SRV, Clapton and Duane Allman. One man's opinion. Thanks for the best series on youtube, Mark and Jen.

Just to note: Fender started using the “transition” logo before CBS took over. It’s just coincidence that the logo change and the company sale happened kinda around the same time. All the mid ‘60s Strats I’ve been lucky to play have been real good ‘uns. Bite and oomph!

In 1972 I had a friend who had a 64 Strat just like this one. He was in the RAF in Cyprus in the late 60s and bought it from a US serviceman. By 72 the frets were very worn so he traded it for a new Strat. Who knew then what a crap deal he'd made.

Years ago I had this girl move in with me that was a fantastic classical pianist. Being a classical fan myself we talked about our favorite composers and pianists for a while but then she asked about the guitars I had around and my favorite guitarists. The first thing I did was break out my SRV CDs and play Lenny for her. She loved it. Absolutely glorious piece of music.

wingracer 16 if she digs this song, she will absolutely ADORE it after she hears the story behind it. Just in case you've never heard or read it, this is the story, straight from an interview with Stevie's widow, Lenore, a.k.a., Lenny: According to Lenny, Stevie found this beautiful red Strat at a pawn shop somewhere where they'd been living at the time, but they couldn't afford the $600 price tag. So, as usual, when a musician spots an axe that we really, REALLY want but can't have, we WILL at LEAST drive or walk by it every chance we get. One day, Lenny got the idea to ask their friends to see if they could each chip in $50 for this red guitar that Stevie wanted so badly...and they did! Yep, 12 friends later, she went to that pawn shop, and bought the beautiful red Strat, to give to Stevie who, according to Lenny, wouldn't put it down, and played it all day and night! The next morning, Lenny woke to the sound of SRV, playing his new favorite Strat. When she asked how long he'd been up, playing, he replied, "All night, baby. Come on over here and listen to this song I just finished writing." And with that, Lenny was the first person to hear the song, Lenny, on the lovely red guitar Stevie had named after his wife, "Lenny." Man, what a great story!! 😀
