I have no idea who you are talking about but I do think that there should be an algorithm geared negatively in some way for content (or Landscape photography (in this case)) which is mediocre at best. I rarely post because of time, but i know that each one of my 'productions' take about 40 hours to put together, and only post when something is worth doing right. If there is a YT code to crack... I wouldnt have a clue how to! Keep plugging away man. Gets to us all in some way shape or form. Stay true to what your photography and channel represents. Regards, Ewan

I’m a non-tuber (is that actually a thing?). So many points to reflect on in your vlog today mate, and thank you for standing up and calling them out - I think in a lot of ways it’s borderline bullying by whoever had the gall to suggest someone’s channel may be below par. I’m desperate to improve my photography, so that I can consistently look at my own photos and think “yeah, I like that”, if it gets noticed & appreciated by others along the way - extra feel good factor. I’ve recently found myself unsubscribing from some of the ‘bigger’ channels, as I find that quite a lot of the time they constantly try and push people to purchase something from them - it actually feels like their photography is just incidental to pushing their products. I now sit back and enjoy ‘smaller’ channels (I’d say more intimate, but I don’t want anyone getting any ideas 🤣) where the content is engaging, the vlog is entertaining, and there might even be some great photography along the way. There are definitely great locations - ones that I can actually aspire to visiting myself without having to rob Chase Manhattan to afford it. You and I talked briefly about the sponsor honey trap when we met, which as you know I kind of fell victim to. Well, I’ve actually dumped my web site, domain et al, last week - I finally got (correctly) into that mindset of “Martin, what the hell are you playing at. Get out there, enjoy your photography & improve where you can. Oh, and try not to give a sh** about what others think unless it’s constructive and will help you to achieve your goals”. Thanks Gary, great video mate. (Oh, and thank God you said you were getting wet and not m………. 🤣🤣🤣🤣)

Sure I won’t be the first man to say how much we love you Gary. I do believe that ‘the algorithm’ is blamed often from certain creators who don’t get the views they believe they deserve. Partly yes, it is due to a lesser engaging personality, story teller etc but it isn’t just this. Content is key, quick engaging strap lines, thumbnails etc etc. There are lots and lots of key factors I’m sure and that’s why I’ve always created videos that I want to and enjoy. A high standard of photography and good video creating is not a common thing as well and that’s why we see it’s either one or the other. Personally when I see your Normans Wisdom videos, I don’t hesitate in watching it because you are very engaging Gary. You continue to moan mate. All good

Great video mate. I put out a video last week and I used the term "The intention of Attention", meaning people just shooting images for the sake of attention rather than doing it because you love it. Its very similar to that in the respect that they just do videos for the likes and subscribes. Also, if people love me or hate me, I don't care, I love doing what I do, being out taking images and making videos. Would I like to be bigger, yes, but I will just keep doing what I am doing and see what happens!

Gary, I certainly don't hate your channel, I find it a breath of fresh air. I don't have a You Tube channel and don't do Social Media, and video production seems to me like hitting my fingers with a hammer so I don't do it. I like watching You Tubers for several reasons, there is one with 10K of subscribers that is so bad I have to watch it, and wonder who goes on his workshops, others I watch because they are decent photographers, but I shy away from lifestyle cook in a bag, electric bike riders. The YT you refer to I never watch because it is boring and assumes that all his subscribers are virgin photographers, I think he has a part time job selling printers. Good luck on the walk. !!

I don't know that photographer or their work, I've not come across them before. But I have come across you and, thinking back, it's because I was watching photography channels on KZbin and yours came up. So something happened to connect my watching habits with your channel. I could've watched your content and simply clicked away, never to return, but there is something that keeps me subscribed and watching and I think that it's you, Gary. For me, I relate so much more to your images, and more specifically, your journey in photography. I can't relate to the photographers who travel around the world in their camper vans; I have a day job and all sorts of other commitments. The photography I like to do is my hobby (I am involved in photography for my day job, but it's work), and I see so much in common with you when I watch your videos, than I do the photographers going on road trips to Iceland, etc. Your content gives me heart, it makes me want to do more, to struggle harder and make better images, within the constraints that I have. I also think you're right, any photographer's aim should be to take better photographs than increase their subscribers and views. And I'd rather hang out with you, than any super-star landscape photographer.

I watch photography channels mainly for ideas and or inspiration. I avoid channels that have "arrogant" host (I have unsubscribed from a couple for that reason) and I abhor channels where the "main goal" is to sell me something. If I am in need of advice or technical information on products or equipment, I will search specifically for that. I favor the honest and humble approach and also enjoy the videos that have an educational value. I find your channel relaxing, honest, and inspirational so I guess that means I like it.

There’s plenty of early adopters of you tube that have done well in numbers but frankly their photography is laughable. If your only concern is the metrics then you’re really in it for the wrong reasons, do it cause you love it. Don’t get drawn into their game Gary, they are purposely doing a topic to get a reaction, boost their engagement etc, cause that’s all they care about. I am going to be a bit cynical for a moment. It is no secret that KZbin revenues are down. I've seen lots of prominent KZbinrs make that comment. So against that background, I listened to those comments from X thinking that they were designed to "scare off" smaller channels and convince them to stop so that those more longstanding and established channels can get their views (and therefore revenues) back. Trouble is that the KZbin genie is out of the bottle, and for every small channel that stops, a new one is born. My KZbin channel is tiny - less than 2k subs - but fame and fortune is not my aim. My channel is all about informing interested parties about who I am as a person and a photographer in the hope that they might book me for a 121, or a workshop, or a camera club event. Does my snails-pace channel growth bother me? Well... in truth, sometimes yes - it would be nice to have a larger following and a bit more recognition, but then I remind myself about why I chose to do it in the first place. There is room on the platform for all types of channel, so my view Gary is that you put out the content that you want to put out. If viewers don't get it then that is their problem and not yours. Stay safe and dry out there sir.

I have seen images from larger channels and so called professional photographers, that in my opinion is average at best , but like you said play the youtube game well , create good thumbnails and clickbaity titles. Yes the video is ok well produced etc etc but the resulting images never blow me away, in contrast i see much smaller channels who dont play the youtube game whos videos are equally as good if not better and the resulting images are, in my opinion, far better consistently yet dont get the views they deserve. Its an interesting topic and sadly some people have opinions as big as their misplaced ego . I do like your approach and well balanced, considered arguments , keep up the good work mate all the best

Hi Gary, another thought provoking one from you ... for me the measure of success people have is their own opinion based on how they define success, To me some opinions are of value , other less so. Personally, exclusively as a viewer, I look for elements that will help me be a better photographer, not the wizziest production methods. One case in point is Stuart's video from Lofoten with the Northern lights this week .. it was Stunning ;-) ... Stu's clearly a really nice guy but from a production standpoint he definitely struggled as he acknowledged, but as for content, WOW the images he made and things you could learn from it were truly memorable ( not to mention him trying hard not to run around like a headless chicken, he was so excited and why wouldn't you be, that was funny ), I'd recommend anyone have a watch. Alternatively I can think of other prominent channels where the presentation is so much more impressive but the content is DULL ... and though some love it, its not really for me. I guess I'm a bit "marmite" with my tastes. Oh and by the way I think your channel is a great fit for my taste ... engaging, interesting, educational, enjoyable and you're defintiely the right side of "mount stupid". Many are still climbing it. I look forward to you moaning all the way around the hike in the summer, but in a good way ;-) Keep up the good work Gary!

He’s wrong anyway, and I’m a bit surprised at the post tbh. It does seem rather arrogant. The audience can’t hate your channel if they aren’t exposed to it in the first place. Small channels with creators who work hard are up against it to get their videos suggested to viewers in the first place. Just keep making the content you love to make and the audience you have, however small will continue to enjoy it. In other words, the right people will be watching.
@SimonBurnCreative7 ай бұрын
I agree that we watch people like Clarkson for the entertainment value, although he doesn't claim to be an expert, and messes stuff up most of the time and ends up looking like an idiot.. Bigger photography KZbin channels, although some of them are great personalities and do entertain, they try to come across as experts, and many are not particularly great photographers. So it's not the same thing, or a good comparison. Re: audience hating your channel because of lack of views. Bollocks. There's a game to play to build views and an audience. And some of us can't be arsed to play that game. As a VERY small KZbinr with the slowest growth in the photography genre on the platform in history, I laugh at many of these bigger channels and all their nonsense. They call themselves "Pro Photographers" but basically make their living selling and promoting gear. I make my living actually getting paid to take photos and make videos. Maybe someone should remind them they are primarily salespeople, that will piss them off 😁 Get the heck off of Twitter / X, deleting my account was the best thing I did. The guy about the algorithm is talking utter sh*t. Trouble is too many people like him on You Tube trying to tell people how to run their channels and improve. Thing is with photography, it's over saturated so smaller channels will be lost with the many that are out there. It’s pathetic Gary, some people believe they are just so good that they can’t be bettered and think they are so high and mighty. I met one KZbinr, don’t watch him these days, basically down to his attitude, he thinks he’s so high and mighty that he can look down on who he wants, I actually bumped into him once, so ignorant it’s unbelievable, he may well be better than me at photography, most are but so what, I’d heard about this person’s attitude on Facebook that he would get banned from every group and how rude he was in person showed me why, he was very lucky I didn’t give him a mouthful, or worse but I wouldn’t stoop to that level. We’ve been here before mate, haters always gonna hate, what they should do is take a long hard look at themselves, the one I’ve mentioned loves to steal others ideas, he simply isn’t on par with those he steals from either. You do what you do mate, you didn’t post for quite a while and were missed by so many, I’m not just saying that, they told you themselves, keep doing what you’re doing and “Don’t let the Ba#&a%$s grinds you down” See so many channels that have far fewer than you’d expect, seen one recently hit 10k, I was shocked and actually thought they’d missed a 0 off. A good salesman can sell a lot of a crap product if he's really good at selling. Someone with a great product, but without the BS that goes with (some not all) of the best salesmen, won't sell anywhere near as many products, even if the actual product is as good as or better than the one sold by the BS artist. Do what you want the way you want to, and know that some of us out here like you and what you do because of how you go about it. Everyone should have a 'Moan Zone', and one of the reasons your subscribers watch you is because you say what you think, not attempting to sell anything, or keep any gates for anyone. Don't change Gary or take any notice of others negativity towards you please.
@iainmc98597 ай бұрын
It IS the presenter not the photo's. There's plenty of good photographers that I don't subscribe to for two main reasons : 1 - They've got a large back catalogue that I don't have the time or concentration level to go through (fact) 2 - Their vlogs do my nut in due to their personality or video editing style (opinion) The Audience is not the Algorithm. Not sure that the audience even factors into the equation with youTube. If someone wants to be 'successful' on youTube they don't need to be a good presenter or good at the subject matter. They just need to jump on the right bus at the right time to get to the desired location. But that's true of all occupations. Mediocrity is definitely not a drawback in many jobs, in fact it can improve your career prospects. Just so my opinion is clear - just carry on doing what you're doing; I might disagree on any given day with what you say or do but that's just my opinion. If I was a 'gatekeeper', then I'd lock it and have the garden to myself 😊

No idea who you are talking about, but I believe it's "Mr Beast" or some channel that big that said to replace "algorithm with audience", so I believe that's plagiarised. And it is purely from the view point of getting subscribers. View duration is a far more interesting stat if you ask me. I generally get a couple of hundred views on my vids and hardly have any followers. So maybe I am hated?? If I was doing this to generate subscribers I would probably have given up by now.

Another great ramble Gary. I used to be a smaller KZbinr but gave up because I couldn't gain any traction, or get any interaction. I had hoped that by sharing videos of locations from my part of the world, I could engage with others, and maybe make a few connections. I guess that since I don't know how to play "the game" blowing my own horn, or using clickbait titles, keywording, etc., my videos just didn't make it across peoples screens. I don't think it's a like or dislike of someone. I truly think that if I knew some of the "tricks", or befriended other KZbinrs for cross promotion of channels, things may have been different.

In a nutshell, if I didn’t like you and your photography or thought you weren’t entertaining I wouldn’t watch your videos. 🤷🏻♂️

Neither would I. YT would be a duller place without GN 😊👍

Can you delete comments off you tube? I have a fair idea who you're on about after being helped by the comment from Nick Livesey. He is not to keen himself on taking advice! His photographs are sort of "Stating the bleeding obvious". Keep doing what you're doing, enjoying the pubcast too.

Norman's wind up...😂. You wouldn't be you, Gary without a little moan on what cheeses you off. In the end, you bring it back to sound argument and opinion. Basically success comes down to personality being genuine and being able to take a decent photograph. Either missing, see you! That personality, for me, can be a bit boring, be humourous, whatever, as long as it's genuine. A good photograph and the tips that helped make it is vital... Just as important to show the not so good photograph that could have worked, but didn't and point out why. All of the above will measure your success in the long haul. Cheers, Gary.

Are you calling Stuart McG a knob 🤣 Of course you can say what you want and all the labels you use are just words, not worth looking at too deeply if at all. The % who look at it that deeply must be minimal or maybe I'm shallow, who cares.!
