Norman Smith was the engineer for the Beatles from the first test session until Rubber Soul. He helped shape their sound and had a key part to play in them getting their first contract with EMI. After the Beatles he signed Pink Floyd and helped their career before having a go himself as a performer with self penned hits such as 'Dont' Let it Die' and 'Oh Babe, what would you say'.
This is the story of a studio legend and unlikely pop star!

Another excellent video. About time someone gave Norman Smith his due. Many thanks. How about something about Ken Scott (although we do have his commonly available autobiography)?

I agree. And I prefer a lot of what he did with The Beatles to what Geoff Emerick did@@mixingmasteringonline

Norman would have sold the song "Don't let it die" to Lennon but for a friend who told him not to, because The Beatles were a thing of the past in early 70's. That's what some people say.

Really interesting, hard to imagine them being ‘old news’ now. 😮

Norman's song was replaced when the Beatles realized they had to squeeze in a "Ringo song" ( cover of Act Naturally). He almost got on their rocket to riches! watch the whole video!

Smith first, then Geoff Emerick. After that the Beatles rolled their own. All have many accomplishments. Good video.

Don't forget Ken Scott, Pete Bown, and Stuart Eltham - along with Norman Smith and Geoff Emerick, those were The Beatles 5 main engineers, and they had a lot of talented assistant engineers who went on to do great things (e.g., Alan Parsons), as well as having George Martin's then assistant, Pete Thomas, sort-of producing parts of The White Album while George Martin was away on holiday.
