great video series. at 40:14 is the one-hex retreat of the 8/3/6 airborne unit into the woods at bois de bavant allowed given that it's an EZOC and the friendly unit that already exists in the woods is disrupted?

Your ZOC bond interpretation for the 82nd AB retreat out of St. Mere Eglise is incorrect. The unit could have retreated south.

The retreat was correct, but the ZOC-bonds was a bit of. Any other retreat would ended up in a EZOC, thereby eliminating the unit.

German units with their MA in a square black box can not move on turn 1.

The German Ost unit can't AAC. Ost units cant move in turn 1.

All Ost units cant move, but the rules doesnt say they cant attack.

I realise this is an old video, but is it advisable to start Vassal in observer-mode when playing both sides?

No. Depends on who made the modules as some have a "solitaire" option. Both (Solitaire and Observer) just give you the ability to move the other sides pieces really as sometimes they will be locked if you only choose "Team A" or "Team B".
