The video has several late 90s/early 00s music video and film references. Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" in the opening scene with adult Normani appearing on screen, Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" video during the basketball court scene, from what I've read it references the "Step Up" movies and "Drumline". There's also very Aaliyah-like choreo in that last neighbourhood dance scene. That opening scene is very special, showing a dark-skinned little girl as young Normani watching someone like herself being represented in mainstream music. She didn't have that when she was younger, but she became what she wished to see. Also, that's Normani's real grandma in the intro.

The video was literally viral EVERYWHERE and then after the 2019 VMAs they just stopped pushing it. It's a shame. Glad you guys found her though and I loved your reaction!

Yes, because she is not what is known as “racially ambiguous “ that’s why she isn’t promoted like Beyoncé, Rihanna or a Doja Cat. It’s sad because it should only be about her talent…I love equally like the other ladies and more. I like the differences in them all..they all have different singing voices and styles. It’s amazing to see the creativity they unleash onto the world.

Normani is very talented! She actually choreographed many of the dances when she was in “fifth harmony “ and she actually did that back handspring and ball bounce off her booty because she was an gymnast and in dance for years. She’s beautiful and you guys haven’t seen anything yet! Lol Mani, I just think need a better production company. You guys should do Doja Cat or Chloe because of the talent not skin tone. You guys see talent here but people don’t want to admit it because of her skin tone unfortunately and it’s sad because Mani is the sweetest, most humble girl who went through racism from her own band mate Camila. I appreciate you guys for tackling colorism, but try to do that by not comparing two Black women together next time. Of course Beyonce (besides being talented) has benefited from having lighter skin but it does no good to compare the two. We already experience that within the Black community (Black men & women), so to hear a White person say this is jarring. It's even better when white ppl actually recognize colorism when they see it, bc lighter skinned black ppl are more accepted in white spaces (e.g. Beyonce). To date, there is still no dark skin female pop singer in the mainstream. They're all white or light skin. So that's partly why ppl are really behind Normani. Shes hella talented, charismatic, has major stage presence and a great voice, and she represents so many girls who feel overlooked simply bc their skin is darker than others. It's great that u guys are acknowledging her.
