OK.... so, I've had a pretty awful week at work, but these 11 minutes 48 seconds have gone a long, long way to help me to feel so much better. Thanks to all at Norman's for just being nice people.

I pretty much grew up with CBS Fenders, back in the ‘80s. They were plentiful, and fairly inexpensive, and me, and my friends all had a bunch of them. In my experience the b*tching about their quality is just that - my hands on time with them tells a different story. Honestly, I can’t recall any problems with the ones I owned, or had access to, in terms of build quality, playability, tone, and even looks. The only complaint l agree with is that some of them were indeed HEAVY, mostly the ash body ones, but there were lighter ones as well. We also had some pre CBS Fenders, and they were great, but imho, the main attraction to them, was that being older, with more playing time on them, they were a bit more broken in feeling. But overall, the quality, and craftsmanship was right up there on the CBS ones, and tone wise, my ‘79 Strat was easily the best out of the bunch. I’m not saying there was no way there weren’t lemons here and there, but honestly, we never had any. Have you ever seen a total dog of a CBS model on this channel? I believe the bad ones were few, and far between, and I’ll bet there were a few duds made before ‘65 as well. Remember, even tho the corporate office may have been out of touch - there were still good, experienced people on the floor doing their best to make guitars worthy of the Fender name....Imho, for the most part, they succeeded.😉👍

There are two types of 'bad guitar'. Ones that can be easily sorted by a tech/luthier. And the real dogs. TBH, most unloved 70s Fenders are perfectly fine nd glorious when good: if there is an issue just fix it.

I'm looking for THE one right now. They are the best sounding Strats IMHO and a total bargain at half the price of a Custom Shop. If you get one that has a decent neck joint, not too heavy and the fingerboard not too narrow of course! In 20 years time, once people start realizing just how good these things can be, a good one is going to cost a fortune. And the big headstock, it's also the best looking Strat!

All that VH fun starting at the 11:00 mark is exactly how I broke the arm off in the cast one-piece block of my '79 back in the day! Nowadays mine has an all steel block with bent steel saddles (which this one also seems to have) and I pull out the Ibanez with the Floyd Rose if I'm ever inclined to do serious dive bombs 😎

Man...my 79 ash strat is the heaviest guitar I've ever held. And that's with a few ounces of wood at least missing from the Floyd rose I ended up having installed in the early/mid eighties. It was a hard tail originally. Painted it a few times in high school and college. Settled on a green metallic using paint I had left over from painting my 70 heavy nova in vocational auto body class. Lol. About ten years ago I stripped all that, even the fullerplast. Was intending to restore the original sunburst...but ended up just putting a satin clear on it and it's pretty damn gorgous.

They got lucky in some cases, sure, but I owned an original '79 years ago, and it is one of the worst guitars I've ever owned. The other '70s Strats I've played has been a let down too, so the only proof is that at least a few of the '70s Fenders can be good and even great, but I think the overall quality is far better nowadays.

I've been looking for a Strat again recently. I've listened to loads from 50s all the way through to modern custom shop models. The ones I have liked best are the 70s ones! They sound like they have more meat and depth to the tone while still having the classic twang and glassy clean tones.

I think what fender is doing now in the present is awesome. It took them a while they move slow. They stuck with that American standard for 35 years. I hated that guitar.
