I'm not sure when I first feasted my eyes on the Fender Starcaster. What I do think occurred to me was that Fender was trying to compete with a specific Gibson model, the Trini Lopez 335. Anybody else catch that?

I went into this video clearing my mind of the original biases I had against the Starcaster & the Wide Range humbuckers that were being sold in the 1970s when I first started playing guitar. Everything that Michael says is 'cool' about this guitar was what made it unpopular in 1970s. I think they were also the most pricey model in Fender's range when they hit the catalog. Having viewed the video, I am hearing a dull sounding almost 'dead' sound. Now that's only going to appeal to those who came later with the grunge and indie music. It certainly wasn't a sound that was desired in 1970s and through most of the 1980s. I note Michael is playing to that sound. It seems hard to get a jangle out of it. Considering the age, I'd say the pickups are also on the quiet side. Not enough Presence? In short, Michael has just reinforced my preconception from my experience playing these guitars when they were new in the 1970s. Also is this the guitar being advertised on Reverb as ex Michael Lemmo on Norman's shop page? If so, you really should declare that.

This was fenders answer to the Gibson es 335. It has a thicker tone than the typical fenders but yet plays like a fender with easy to play low action and the fender neck feel. One other player that Michael did not mention is Leo nocentelli of the meters who used a starcaster on so many tunes

I always have thought the lowest ebb of Fender or Gibson is when Gibson tries to design a Fender, or vice versa, as in this case. It doesn't mean the guitars don't sound good or play well, but there is something pathetic in copying your competitor.

They used to ask you to play quietly when they were recording. Most of us would just stop altogether. The few that continued playing would get looks of disapproval from everyone else and eventually get the hint.

Given a choice between a Strat and this guitar or pretty much any other Fender, I'd take the other one. This is from the worst era of Fender's manufacturing.
