Kidd's version was not a hit in Australia. Rowe had only heard Johnny Chester's 1961 version with The Thunderbirds. Both of these Australian versions out do the original especially with guitar and drums. Charlie Gould was the Thunderbirds guitar player. Rowe said his version was recorded before the Guess Who which charted about the same time. Rowe's went to No.1.

I remember feeling a little underwhelmed when I first heard the Johnny Kidd version- the Australians always did a great fuzzy guitar and strong bass/drum back line. Thanks, Normie & the Playboys! (PS, Led Zepplin do a rather good version - check out the bootlegs from 1971-3)

A great flanged surfer guitar vibe; when I first heard the Johnny Kidd & the Pirates original many years later, I was a little underwhelmed: as with so many Oz covers, our version(s) really rocked (see The Throb's version of "Fortune Teller' and Doug Parkinson's "Dear Prudence".). but I've come to love this version; accolades to Normie for having the wit/vision to reinterpret it.
