Kwikset Smartkey Rekey Without a operating key tutorial

A tutorial on how to rekey your Kwikset Smartkey lock without having an operating/working key.
We take the lock apart, and take a look at the insides and re program the lock from scratch

Thank you. Things went sideways with the first lock I tried to re-key. With the help of your video, I was able to take it apart and fix it in just a few minutes. And then once I understood how it works, I was able to use the little tool to properly re-key every other lock set on my estate.

thanks a million for the tutorial as the alternative was to buy a new lock simply to get the replacement core. Still not sure how the lock got set to random when I messed up the re-keying process. It was a lot easier then it looked at first.

Thank you for your brief and "to the point video". I lost my Key and brought my smart key cylinders to my local locksmith to have them re-key it for me and they told me that it cannot be done because it does not have "pins" like a regular cylinder, so I left. Then I called kwikset customer service and waited more than 30 minutes for someone to answer my call and give me the part number so that I could order a new cylinder with key. During my waiting time I found your video and re-keyed both of my cylinders in less than 5 minutes with just a small screw driver and paperclip. Thank you and keep up the good work!!!!

I know the key I wanted to rekey to was not working prior, so I'm not sure why, but I put that key in just to see how it pushed the wafers up and I was able to slide the cylinder out; i.e. I didn't have to push the wafers down. It is a mystery.

Perfect. If you have a slightly different lock with smaller components, just be careful and follow thru exactly. It works.

Very impressive that you figured that out yourself. Great job. If I'd seen this video before I bought the Kwikset Smartkey reset cradle, then I wouldn't have had to buy it. Very helpful. Screwed up the re-keying and had no working key. This was easy to do, and worked perfectly - AFTER I got the door off its hinges. ALWAYS HAVE THE DOOR OPEN when re-keying. Dumb mistake I'll not repeat

This video is a lifesaver! My only complaint is that you didn't show the stem/cylinder in place and how to get the c-clip off before removing it, as well as being sure to put it back in place before re-seating the c-clip, which holds that in place for normal deadbolt usage.

Thanks for this! I did find it was easier to reset the pins, insert the key and then replace the pin plate. I found getting the pin plate to slide properly for rekeying didn’t work as well if I replaced it first before inserting the key. Kudos!
