An amazing cat. Fantastic climber and hunter. It is a strange that it is called "Norwegian" as it has existed in the border forests between Norway and Sweden for hundreds of years. At the same time, one should know that the Norwegian forest area is smaller than the Swedish. We share genes with both the Norwegian people and their fauna since time immemorial, e.g. all Nordic predators and prey. More correct to call it 'Scandinavian forest cat'. My cousins in Norway call it 'Skogkatt' and 'Skoga' , meaning 'forest cat', so not 'Norwegian' forest cat. As I myself , born i Sweden, am a Scandinavian origin, ( DNA-tested and genealogic records back to 1000AD in Scandinavia so far ) with Swedish father and Norwegian mother and grew up in a village near the border. I have experiences of cats that no one owned. They were often called feral cats and stroked around the farms and were much larger than ordinary "farm cats." It is also claimed that both this cat and the Siberian is basically the same cat species that developed from immigrant tribes, ie from the Slavic and Central and Southern European areas and then for a long time adapted to a harshly cold climate. The Siberian cat also roams in Finland where I have relatives. It is also likely that the Maine Coon came from forest cats that were found on ships / Viking ships, as mouse hunters. Today it is known, among other things, that Viking ships landed in the Maine area and on New Foundland one thousand years ago.

Interesting information and can't argue since i agree with you. But one reason to why it's called Norwegian Forest cat, might be because they noticed it abroad through someone from a Norwegian village who had the forestcat and that's how it got popularised is my theory. Ww2 and the cat almost extinct with a interest from catlovers who wanted one from that breed and put in alot of effort so it wouldn't disappear.
