North Bridge Road is one of the earliest roads in Singapore, and it runs through the downtown core, Rochor, and Kallang areas in the central region. The road begins at Crawfurd Street and ends where Elgin Bridge crosses into South Bridge Road. Here are some interesting historical tidbits:
Origins and Development:
North Bridge Road was carved out of dense jungle with the help of convict laborers under the direction of Lieutenant Henry Ralfe. Ralfe, a gunnery officer, accompanied Sir Stamford Raffles when he first arrived in Singapore.
Lieutenant Philip Jackson, engaged in road alignment works from 1822 onwards, was instructed by Raffles to develop North Bridge Road. George Coleman took over the survey of the land in Singapore after Jackson left the service in 1827.
Originally, North Bridge Road ran from Arab Street to the Singapore River. It was extended beyond Arab Street in 1925 and thereafter began from Crawfurd Street by the Rochor River.
North Bridge Road was Singapore’s main road, and it played a significant role in the city’s development.

Originally built in 1973 as a two-story building, the North Bridge Road Market was converted into a single-story hawker center after its upgrading in 2005.
The center now comprises 37 cooked food stalls and 82 market stalls, offering a diverse range of delicious local dishes. If you’re ever in the area, make sure to explore the culinary delights here
Fun Fact:
Did you know that there were previously five movie theaters on North Bridge Road? These included Theatre Royal, Diamond Theatre (both Indian cinemas), Jubilee Theatre, Odeon Cinema, and Capitol Theatre. Of these, only the Capitol Theatre building still stands today
