In 1898, white supremacists overthrew a legally elected, multi-racial government in Wilmington, North Carolina. I live here. We call it the port city. my first album was called Stolen City to connect and bring awareness to this history. The newspaper press he is referring to was called the daily record owned by Mr. ALEX Manley who was ran out of town. This newspaper was the only African-American news press in NC at the time.

American apartheid was codified at different times in different places. It's first made law in Mississippi in 1890, in Wilmington NC it's legislated in the wake of this pogrom/coup. Jim Crow is informal practice, there are racist social mores that are enforced/resisted in different ways in different places during and after Reconstruction, but Jim Crow is not the law anywhere until Mississippi enacts legislation in 1890

It wasn’t a riot. It was a massacre. The Light Infantry was used to burn down the Daily Record, a black owned newspaper. They used rapid fire guns to mow down fleeing blacks. This was after white supremacists barged in and stuffed the ballot boxes with Democratic votes. This wasn’t a riot, it was terrorist violence perpetrated by white supremacists to cow blacks into submission.

Most black people have enough sense to listen the words and look at the actions of the party and it’s members.
