Northern 4-8-4 Live Steam Locomotive Air Test Video

My Carl Hoffman designed Northern 4-8-4 live steam locomotive build. Mr. Hoffman drew these as a "Hudson". My chassis is stretched by one driver set to create a Northern. Only 22 plans sold a half a centry ago. When completed this locomotive will run on coal and water and pull adults and children around an outdoor track. I purchased this model after it was begun by a gentleman years ago, sold at an estate sale, donated to a car museum and then purchased by me. What you see is six months into my ownership and many hours of work.

I have my Grandfathers UP 844 FEF-3 in 3.5"ga. Big engine at 4 feet long plus 2 1/2 feet of Tender.

Rods are a bit bound up, but she looks in good shape! I'm looking at maybe picking up someone's project engine myself, a CB&Q 4-8-4

Thanks for watching. I'm regulating the air pressure with a handheld air blower nozzle. Pretty crude but it was just a test. I think that is what gives the impression of the rods being herky jerky at low pressures. Also at the time there was no suspension springs. I had the axles pinned in place. The reversing links change the valve timing. This makes the locomotive more efficient at speed with corresponding less power. If you change the timing even further the locomotive can be reversed.

The eccentric cams between the frames, on the second driver, are for an axle driven feed water pump.

I agree the audio sounds like its running dry. I promise it isn't. I put way oil on the moving parts prior to testing. Also add light weight oil to air line for valve/cylinder lubrication. Please continue to watch as the locomotive project continues.
