As a sufferer of PTSD and other mental health issues due to the troubles. Is there any wonder northern Ireland has the worst mental health problems in europe even in 2021. If I had the power I'd would try and draw a line under the troubles evil was done on both sides. We can't change what happened I should know the ongoing stress and anxiety and trauma I went through and also know people and family close to me who suffered.and respect and understand all who suffered, I want effort and money to be put into helping everyone who are still effected and suffer daily with physical and most importantly mental health. Really bring an end to the legacy of the troubles, so people can start living their lives instead of existing and stop allowing the troubles of the past holding them there but set them free and our we country can be great for all. No matter what side your from

@@JJaguar333 I wouldn't go that far! British soldiers regardless of where they're from tend to shift towards a pro government stance regardless of who is in charge; as if they're hard wired to be that way. And I say that as somebody who is friends with quite a few former squaddies who, while are highly critical of a lot of neoliberal, anti working class (typically tory) policies are unconditional in their support of the state on national security. I myself am much more critical, but i've never served so what would I know?

The, " politics of the gun and the bomb". It always amazes me the pompous attitude of the brit media interviewing the ordinary people who have been living in complete slums from the beginning of the failed state not knowing that for people at the bottom the only leverage to be heard is The gun & bullet. It has been proven time after time it's the only language the Brits really understand. Same as what happened in the South, although modern day southern media try to sanitize the armed struggle by great men like BREEN, BARRY and the rest, mainly because what we ended up with Connolly and his comrades would be turning in their graves.

@@conordorrian1652 Too true. Typical of biased media. And Dan Breen and co turning in their graves 💯 and at what Sinn Fein has become (sell out to the Irish people) I'm not from Ireland but my Great grandmothers were and the town I'm from is of Irish/Scottish descendants. My girls did Irish dancing for years and played a part in the peaceful yearly St Patrick's day walk They put a stop to it a few years back (saying they couldn't police it )but allowed the orange walk to continue. There was never any animosity between them when any of the walks took place. Although I was born and raised in England with an Irish and Scottish heritage, I see the British Government will not take ownership of the shitty power hungry atrocities that they have done to other nations. They also have the audacity to project their own wrongdoings onto the ones they oppressed in their power games and lie through the media and throughout History and still happening presently. Hate breeds hate and that's what they do and are still doing except this time around it involves many nations

I will never forget those two soldiers. I lay awake crying for them. I was 10. This issue is still relevant today especially for my family well my dads side who is catholic Irish, his relative was killed on steps of the town hall in Ireland, I mentioned the troubles in an argument with him, as I’m British English, all hell broke loose😐 On the lines of me saying “at least us english, don’t blow up woman and children, to which he swiftly grabbed me by the neck and said at least us Irish don’t kill unarmed civilians over what in-effect a land dispute between Irish citizens, from an invading government and country” To which I shut up, and did research😐 Safe to say he was kinda right and it was the british who kicked all this bullshit off in Ireland, however it’s not bullshit to the Irish and I now respect there reasons as to why they the IRA exist, however not a supporter of the IRA because at the heart it was formed based on fear and violence, but I also believe that the british army and the like to at the heart is fear and violence, the BA are overt the IRA are covert, however both at its core are for separation and disagreements, a bit like me and my father, on our political and other ideas🤷🏻‍♂️

A reflection of the bleakness of NI in the 80s. Where there is a lack of prosperity or hope for the future violence is almost inevitable. Who are the terrorists? What would England do if foreign soldiers with armoured cars and tanks and guns landed. Would they not defend their country and would they be called rebels for doing so? I think not so why is that what happened here? How can you be a terrorist for defending your own country against a foreign oppressor? It was Britain that perpetuated this situation by trying to subjugate the Irish people.

Actually the British army finally went in to protect catholic families from the rampaging protestant mobs. The Catholic civilians greeted the army like heroes, grateful for the protection. This went on for weeks. It was the RA that ensured conflict between the catholic population and the army to further the aims of the IRA. The IRA drew the lines not the army. Read some books.👍

valuable interviews. But bias voice-over script - - ignorant in that Dimbleby seems oblivious of his loaded presumptuous sentences. Perhaps half the real story. Dimbleby pitches it as the objective bigger picture, as if he doesn't know he's embedded inside the half he's slanted his voice-over towards. The report has a short-term memory on a long-term problem. There's enough "Evil" to go around the block for 250 years.

There is no mention as to why the IRA existed or why they had such wide spread support in these “ghettos”. Years of abuse and state discrimination left many good people with no other alternative than to fight with violence. One must ask the question, if a community Is left with no other alternative than this… what really is the problem then. Both the IRA and British army were simply men with guns.

Everything the father said goes both ways the problem about why the ira is there is the same with the loyalists, they want something different and till that gets sorted then there will always be hate towards the British from one side and love from the other, from the British side of things the people want there Irish cousin's to be happy and not at war with themselves and to sort things out to were there both happy but i don't think that'll ever happen, plus i think together were stronger and its Europe that wants to help split the UK up, in anyway it can,

@9 mins 37 seconds the interviewer asks who has a job. The first few tell him what their jobs are and then the rest start laughing and all say they have no jobs. The reason they’re laughing is that they’re all “doing the double” (working and claiming unemployment benefit cash from the Government - this was rife in Catholic/Nationalist areas). Catholics dominated the construction and hospitality industry - employment sectors where “the double” could be done easily. Whereas the Protestant working class were mostly in low paid factory jobs (and security or civil service) jobs that all went through the books legitimately. This is why the unemployment figures in Catholic areas was even higher than it really was. It’s no different to ghettos in most countries. At the beginning of the Northern Ireland state, the Catholic Church told Catholics not to join Government jobs or security forces jobs because they didn’t want to support the state existing. The Catholic Church wanted Northern Ireland to unite with the Republic of Ireland so that they were the official Church of the state right across Ireland. The Catholic Church also were against contraception and so Catholic families were much larger than Protestant ones. This caused a shortage of Catholic housing and a shortage of Catholic jobs. Even when Catholics did have jobs, some of the men deliberately didn’t want to work because it was more beneficial to get state benefit cash for, eg 10 children, than to try to pay for them all on a working class income. This created a very bad culture of unambition in those areas. Protestants would often claim Catholics were lazy. Protestants might have felt more of a duty to contribute to the state and had a ‘Protestant Work Ethic’ (mostly gone nowadays), but many Catholics probably just thought low paid jobs weren’t worth their while. It must be remembered that those Catholics in poor areas of Northern Ireland were always economically much better off in the UK than those in the Republic of Ireland.
