Part 2 - • Northern Irish Unionis...
Protestant couples from Belfast in Northern Ireland travel south to spend time in the Republic of Ireland and experience life across the border.
The six Unionist couples are: Fred and Molly Otley, Sam and Ann Egerton, Alfie and Elsie Large, Bill and Betty Brown, Alec and Ella Hill and Jim and Anne Smith.
Will seeing life over the border and meeting the people there change some preconceived ideas?
Twenty-nine year old Fred Otley and his wife Molly live in west Belfast. Fred is a lorry driver with Harland and Wolff.
Before the Troubles ever started I had a good relationship with down south, so much so I went down there as pipe bands, I’m a pipe band man. Now I wouldn’t put my foot in it, normally, only for this programme.
Sam Egerton has lived all his life in east Belfast. His father worked in a shipyard and he has relations are in the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). Sam has
Become more hardened towards men of violence on both sides.
His wife Ann does not take much interest in politics and finds she disagrees with her husband on some points but
Otherwise I would just sit and listens and take it all in.
Alfie Large is an Orangeman from Ravenhill Road area of Belfast.
It’s not the south I fear, it’s the people who are wanted up here, that have gone down south and they’re safe down there.
His wife Elsie grew up without any idea of differences between Protestant and Catholics.
The first time I ever learnt the word Fenian was when I started to go with my husband.
Bill Brown was born and raised in the Shankill Road in west Belfast.
I always believed there was always a certain amount of animosity towards the Northern people both Protestant and Catholic, because the Northern Ireland people are different although the Northern Catholic tries the retain the same cultural background as their counterpart in the south.
His wife Betty is a proud Ulster woman who does not think the south has any jurisdiction over her. She is convinced people in the Republic have no freedom.
You haven’t the freedom to think, you’re a puppet on a string, you can’t even read a dirty book. I’m not advocating that you do read a dirty book but if I wanted to read one I don’t think anybody should tell me not to. I’m not afraid of republicanism.
Alec Hill is a fitter by trade who takes an interest in his trade union and the Orange Order.
I have been down south not dozens but hundreds of times prior to all these Troubles.
His wife Ella was raised to respect the Queen.
Jim Smith believes the Catholic church
Exerts far too great an influence, not only over it’s only members, but also over other religious groupings who happen to be a minority.
His wife Anne leaves politics to her husband and is looking forward to her first trip down south although
I expect to find an awful lot of poverty but there again as I say I might be wrong.
‘Down There’ was broadcast on 12 July 1973. The reporter is Tom McGurk.

That was a mad 7 minutes for me. Started off thinking it was a parody for the first minute almost waiting for an audience laugh then quickly sobering up to how real it was. Am I the only one who thinks it's utterly tragic how people on this island have been led their whole lives by religion, government and monarchy, none of which could care less about the people on this bus? Depressing stuff

I agree. They feel that the Catholic Church has too much influence, whilst their own head of state is one and the same as their head of church. On the flipside, Nationalists are generally of the same opinion but would never agree with a Unionist on the matter. Northern Ireland are like bickering children volleying 'he said, she saids' back and forth. Until they can agree amongst themselves, I would never vote for a United Ireland.

Closely related?... I understand what you say but this predates the beginning of any conflict pre the 'easter rising'. The fact of identity becomes irrelevant, it's like saying to a muslim, can you please become a christian for the sake of a border and vice versa. It's a sad indictment of religion and it's dogma that cripples people and it's attitude to one another.

It’s not everyone. I’m and unionist and am from a unionist background. I’ve never had contempt for the Republic of Ireland. I used to go there every year for the six nations and of course supported Ireland in other sports too. It’s just we don’t see ourselves from that country. From the island of Ireland yes. I’ve no problem saying that. I’ve never voted DUP and never will. I think most family and friends would agree with me. This is just a bunch of hillbillies on the bus!

Yes for the most part you’re correct. I’d say a large proportion of the English population and particularly Southern English have very little or zero knowledge of Ireland and it’s people and politics. They don’t understand Republicanism/Nationalism or Unionism/Loyalism nor do they understand why the troubles happened or that six of Ulster’s nine counties are part of the UK - literally part of the same nation state that they are in! They hear an Irish accent and are unable to distinguish whether it’s Northern or Southern and that’s it they’re Irish not British!

The lady who talked about not being able to ' read a dirty book ' was referring to the time in the Irish Republic where the Catholic church did hold massive influence over the moral and social fabric of the country . Times have changed exponentially now and the Republic is a much more secular state due to the church being the author of it's own downfall , mainly due to the abuse scandal . ( I say that as a practicing Catholic and I dont take any pleasure in saying it ) . I think if anything any hard line Christian teaching now comes from the likes of the DUP and Presbyterians in the north .

A great video to watch. It’s amazing the changes in people over time. I’ve spent over 3 years living in Belfast and I’ve been in the Shankill Road and the Falls Road.. We’ve many friends from Belfast who visit us down south on a regular basis and visit us for holidays. . I used to stay in Farset Hostel cum Hotel. It’s now occupied by refugees and no longer available for visitors on holidays. A change of scenery is a tonic for us all. Life goes by too quickly and we need to enjoy and be a blessing to our fellow humans in every way possible in Jesus name

Also remember them commenting on the grottos to The Virgin Mary as they drove down and saying how southern protestants had been brainwashed or something. @@opencurtin I am not denying that there was not discrimination against Catholics in the North. Far from it. What I am pointing out is the Catholic Church had an equal hand in encouraging Racial Discrimination Segregation and hatred against their fellow Protestant neighbors long before Bloody Sunday or event the Modern troubles of the latter Half of the 20 Century ever started. This made the troubles inevitable. All you have to do is look at the racist bigoted teachings of the Catholic Church on mixed marriages their children etc. the Fethard on sea boycot of 1957 is an example of when the Catholic Church attempted to Flex its power and the Devalera government became alarmed that it could escalate into Bloody civil war. It had been such a cauldron of tension for many years it was inevitable that the troubles were going boil over. You also have to remember that particularly after 1916 many Protestants were discriminated against as well the vast majority of these were not landed gentry but were ordinary middle class and working class Irish Protestants. Thankfully oppressive institutions such as unionism and the Catholic Church are slowly but progressively being dismantled. Hopefully never ever to rise again 🇨🇮 💪

@@williambinions4205 The Catholic Church was “ Racist” towards Irish Protestants? 🤔 I think maybe you mean “Sectarian”? Catholicism, and Protestantism are not races. The Catholic Church never condoned racism. Spaniards, Portuguese, and Frenchmen intermarried with indigenous native women, and female African Slaves in their colonies. Slavery, and Imperialism, are both wrong, but the “Catholic” Empires still treated their subjects better. Irish Catholic Slaves intermarried with African Slaves in the Caribbean, because they sympathized with the Africans, because they were also treated harshly by English Protestants. The age would add up as he said he was 29 here in 1973, and it said 44 in 1988. There is nothing preventing the British prime minister being Catholic. Boris Johnson was baptized as a Catholic, although raised as an Anglican and he was married in a Catholic ceremony while in office. There are no Catholic clergy in Dail Eireann mainly because the Church forbids clergy running from office any more. However, some of the seats in the Seanad are filled by special interest groups such as the six members elected graduates of two universities.
