Yes, a somewhat surprising statistic considering their relative abundance. However, Northern Lapwings have suffered a sustained decline in many areas across Western Europe. Despite several targeted recovery efforts, their recovery has not been successful in all areas. This is largely due to the conversion of native habitat for agriculture and urbanisation; resulting in poor water retention and lower infiltration of water into the soil. This means that the soil is drier and less fertile during periods of low rainfall, and more susceptible to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. Ultimately, this reduces the availability of their invertebrate prey, and affects their breeding success rate.
