Northern Lights Cruise to Norway: 6 Things to Expect on Fred Olsen

I’m just back from almost two weeks travelling with Fred Olsen Cruise Lines on the MS Borealis from Liverpool in northwest England to the north of Norway.
Yes that’s right, a cruise well beyond the Arctic circle in the darkness and subzero temperatures of January - all with the goal of seeing the aurora borealis, otherwise known as the northern lights. A winter cruise in Norway is very different from your typical cruise and in this video I’m going to talk about some of the reasons why. Did the lights come out to play for us? Thank you for this. I saw the northern lights on an October surf trip to Unstad on Lofoten many years ago and I vowed to take my friends up there. We got a great aurora show and I'm convinced that the Northern Lights Inspired the whole idea of angels and heaven. What else were the ancients supposed to think? Maybe this is the way to do it out of Liverpool. Thank you.

@@benjaminmarcus17 Cruise prices vary hugely based on so many things. It's best to look up a specific itinerary on the cruise website.

Howdy David, thanks so much for the very informative video and write-up! Question: *just* in terms of northern lights viewing from a ship at sea, do you see any major differences between this larger Fred Olsen ship and a much smaller one from Hurtigruten or Havila along the coast? Thanks from Texas!

Great question! Yes and no. The coastal ships call in at more ports so spend longer in the north. With a cruise ship it all depends on the itinerary, ideally you need to be north of the Arctic circle for at least four nights to give yourselves the best chance. I’ve seen the lights from both Hurtigruten and this Fred Olsen ship. I would choose on other factors - i.e. what else do you want out of the experience.

Hey! What would you suggest to someone visiting Norway for the first time, (if they're planning to see Northern lights in December end) 1) Havila Cruise tour from Tromsø - Kirkenes - Tromsø (including Nordkapp excursion) or 2) Local Northern lights tours from Tromsø? Thank you!

It depends on so many things, not least your own expectations, what you want to see and do, budget, etc. That being said, if you're starting and ending in Tromsø it makes sense to do both.
