I've been shadow-banned by KZbinr Paul Whitewick, so I'm improvising, sorry! The Vinland Map was definitively proved to be a fake by a random Scottish guy named John Paul Floyd in 2013 [basic summary of its history in my video "The Greatest Hoax That Was Actually True- My over-reaction (The Vinland Map Story)"], but thanks to works like Adam of Bremen's 11th century history book "Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum" the existence of Vinland was quite widely known. Catch was, it was not significant because the Norse mariners, unlike Columbus, did not have weapons superior to those of the native Americans (aka Skraelings), so they had to retrreat.
