Just for the record, John o' Groats is the most northerly _town_ but is not the mostly northerly point of the British mainland. It's very close, but not quite - Dunnet Head, which _is_ the most northerly point, is about 11 miles northwest of John o' Groats. The northernmost point in the UK is Out Stack, Shetland, roughly 150 miles further north. When you were in John o' Groats you were north of Juneau, Alaska!

This reminds me of one of my favorite movies of all time is "Local Hero" with Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert about a Texas oil company wanting to buy the town of Airsaig to put in an oil refinery. Lots of very subtle humor. I watch it about every year and it is so sweet and nuanced. Directed by Bill Forsyth, who did "Gregory's Girl" which featured Keira Knightly in her first role.

Hey guys just wanted to say that I've particularly enjoyed your Scotland videos. I've been living in Canada for the past twenty years or so but was born and raised in Dundee so your videos have been a trip down memory lane for me, so especial thanks for that. I'm really happy to see how much you're enjoying Scotland, the diversity of scenery is quite amazing. I'm hoping you guys managed to make it to the west coast anywhere north of Glasgow. The beaches are incredible and for me it's the most beautiful area of Scotland. Anyhow keep up the good work guys. You two are a lovely couple and it's a pleasure to share in your adventures. In 2018 we officially reached Peak Pony ;). The large flat expanse in the north east around Caithness and Sutherland is called the flow country BTW and it's the biggest blanket mire (peat bog basically) in Europe. And yep, small country roads can be a bit mad here, a lot of them will be at the national speed limit which is 60 MPH on a single carriageway. My dad used to say that's not so much a speed limit as a dare ;).
@MartinJames389
@MartinJames389 6 жыл бұрын
The sad thing is you miss so much by sticking to a road. Shanks's pony (two feet) is the way to see the Highlands. You comment on the land's emptiness of people, but there's missing history there. The Clearances. Most of the population was EVICTED in the 18th and especially the 19 century, with great cruelty, to make way for sheep, which were more profitable or the fuedal landowners. It was the same in the Hebrides. It's where a big chunk of the population of Canada came from. Gaelic is still spoken in Cape Breton. A big chunk of the population of Glasgow, too, where the industrial revolution's misery and exploitation was suffered by dispossessed and evicted Highlanders and refugees from the famine in Ireland. Historically, as you passed from Caithness, from the flat Tundra of the Flow Country, the Causey Mire (Europe's biggest expanse of blanket bog), to the mountains of the North-west, you passed from Norse Scotland to Gaelic Scotland. Just look at the placenames! Many of those in Caithness could well be in Yorkshire! The islands you couldn't afford to sail to (the Orkneys with the Shetlands much further North) were once parts of Norway. As you come to the Gaelic placenames, however, you'd need a quick course in aspirated spelling to pronounce them (though some got Anglicised in the 19th century). Only 16 letters in the alphabet, so many sounds are represented by combinations of letters which look very odd if you don't know them.

Eric commented a lot on how the landscape kept changing as you drove. This is so pretty much everywhere in Great Britain, as you've probably already realised. Great Britain is geologically very diverse - it contains a very large proportion of the rock types found in the world, all packed into a relatively small area and spanning almost all geological ages. This is the reason why the landscape changes so much across quite small distances. If you look at a gelogical map of the whole island you'll soon see how astonishingly diverse it is!

Smoo Cave brought back some memories of one of my trips in that area back in 1968. All the wood walks were not there then but there is a story, too long for here, about asking a local about the nearest pub which brought about an extra two days in the area! The term "peat reek" is ever burned into my brain.

Great video! At first I thought you were wearing an Orphan movie t-shirt, Eric. And then I looked closer and realized "Oh, that's Bjork!" haha

If you drive down the west coast towards Oban the scenery gets very high and impressive. When Pangea was breaking up and the early continents were moving around, Britain picked up as NW Scotland (low bits) a bit of what is now Canada. The snail shells in Europe have a turn (clockwise or anti-clockwise) But American snail shells are the opposite, and these N American shell remains are in the rocks of N W Scotland.

While up there, have a look for the "Falls o' Shin", near Lairg. It's inland from the coast, but worth seeing, as you can see Salmon jumping up a smallish waterfall. And the reason the landscape is so empty - that's what the "highland clearances" did, where landowners burned families out of their crofts, stuck them in boats, and shipped them off to Canada and Australia. Its why these places have a big Scottish contingent.

John O'Groats is not the most northern point in Scotland. It is advertised as such. The place is called Dunnet Head. Your videos are great, I like that you go to remote areas.

John O'Groats is the northernmost town on mainland Britain; the northernmost point on mainland Britain is actually Cape Wrath.

I'm from the East coast of the Highlands, which is a little more populated than the West coast where you were, shame you didn't get to see Dunrobin castle.
